Greg Howe’s specialty is rhythmic jazz and fusion. I love his playing. It sounds almost as if he is he knows exactly what note to hit at the right time all the time. This video doesn’t do him justice because it’s way far off of the type of music he plays. Also, for people saying Greg looks uncomfortable: his demeanor is always quiet and controlled like that. He’s not uncomfortable. Watch his other videos. I don’t think Paul is being an Asshole either I just think he has way more theatrics on stage
I don't think Greg being "uncomfortable", just when Paul swapped his guitar Greg had to play with Paul Gilbert's so low hung one and for a guitar player used to position his guitar higher its quite a handicap. Some guitarists like Slash, Paul Gilbert, Steve Clark (RIP) just love playing with their guitars hanging down their knees and others like John Petrucci, Greg Howe like to have them higher.
Dude, greg started with rock. Do you think that greg cant play over this kind of easy harmony if he can play over giant steps? He played well ...he was uncomfortable when they switched guitars, because greg's playing is very pretentions cuz he is using alot of string skipping , hammer ons and legatos. His licks are infernal. He is not a classic typical shreder la Paul Gilbert.
Paul is like Socrates. Messing around in a music community, taking part in serious conversations that lead to amazing conclusions. Great guitar players on stage
Greg Howe is hands-down my all-time favorite not just guitar player, but over-all musician. Anyone who loves high-end guitar virtuosity and takes the time to get acquainted with his body of work will not be disappointed. The way he puts everything together is phenomenal. That being said, when I tell people about him I always suggest NOT watching him on YT, but listening instead to his discs. For some reason he doesn't shine live like he does on his albums.LISTEN TO HIS ALBUMS. He is an absolute genius. I don't get how that doesn't translate to his live performances, but to me it's almost night and day. If all I knew of him was watching him on YT, I wouldn't be all that impressed. But I have all of his CDs, and it's a completely different story. I love Paul too, and I have to say that he has really improved over the years. Not necessarily technically, but creatively. He could always burn with the best of them, from his earliest days with Racer X. His double leads with Bouillet were magical. To me his playing was much more mundane with Mr. Big. But he's doing things on this video that I've never seen him do before, and it's impressive.
Right on, Mr. Blow. On Ascend and Hyperacuity Howe was beyond comprehension deep in the Prog and Fusion realm. I’ve seen him live a few times in NYC pre-damndemic and he had a couple of off nights and it leaves one confounded. You know he’s great but possibly not on stage? I suspect he’s quite shy by nature and Gilbert is a major extrovert.
@@spencerdawson6536 Exactly. He's not a prick-waver. And the guys who are all the most impressive on stage are major prick-wavers. It's all part of putting on a show. I've never actually seen him live. Had a ticket 20-30 yrs ago for a show that never happened; then, a little over 2 yrs ago I bought a front row ticket for a show here in Seattle(at the Tripledoor) that got postponed thanks to Klaus Schwab unleashing the plandemic scamdemic on the world, and now that show is completely cancelled because Greg's fiancé has cancer and he has to take care of her. So, I hope that she pulls through.
Agree with you. I have over 100 instrumental electric guitar albums and Greg's are among the few I repeatedly come back to because he creates moving compositions, not just series of fast licks for their own sake.
@@a.s.2426 All-time greatest, for sure! He SHOULD be more popular than guys like Satch and Vai, IMO, but woefully, he's not. Not that they aren't awesome-they are. Howe is just better.
@@deadreckoning292 You must have shitty ears if you think that a guy like greg who plays over giant steps cant play play over Little Wing. He only encountered problems when they switched guitar, because Greg's style is very pretentious. It's full of note skipping, hammer ons and legato's, and are all combined in those licks he is using. He is not your classical straight shreder like gilbert.
Greg Howe is one of the best guitar players on this planet. From Jazz and Jazzrock to Blues. This guy can deliver ! Especially for Jazz you don`t need just fast fingers, but a lot of knowledge and a fast mind :-) Gilbert is great as well but much more limited in terms of style. Anyway, the best of all, if we are talking about fluent fingers and the most sophisticated harmonic understanding was Alan Hodsworth. RIP. Listen to his music !
@@alexisrosalesruiz7334 Yes, you are right I forgot to mention Frank Gambale ! He is on the same level in any terms of music like Alan Holdsworth. I love them both.
@@bensallaboutmusicchannel4609 Shawn Lane Also Check out DCPRG Group from Japan, Takayoshi ohmura played with them Also Marty Friedman.. Friedman is very different from Holdsworth, but he has insane knowledge of the fretboard and harmonies and writes melodies in custom scales
Greg Howe and his brother Albert were in a group called Duke. I was about 17 years old when I first heard his guitar playing scream VanHalen tunes. He's an amazing guitar player, and this was awesome to see him play with Paul Gilbert. Thanks for posting up.
Greg Howe is one of my favorite players, such great sound and style.. for some reason he was a bit off here, bit as the thing progressed it became more enjoyable. I never listened to Paul Gilbert much, but he is so sharp at ever second, incredible shit, this dude practices the damn guitar, that's for sure.
I Love the humbleness of Paul Gilbert, he really is great guy, he's really easy to get along with.....and believe it or not...his phone# is the directory! Best version of Little Wing!
From 7:10 Paul Gilbert fell in love to Greg's tune. 10:05 Greg's thought "yes! thats it, thats it!" 😆 Changing guitar 👍 They're must be proud to each other and never forget that experience. Both are cool.
Love both these guys but greg for me in this one! Fusion is his thing love it..his style is so dam hard to play..his guitar tone kicked arse too. Love both u guys learnt so much from paul..easier and bread m butter paying the bills ye ah hehe
Paul Gilbert is so good he just enjoy the moment whoever he plays with, whereas any other guitarist whoever he is slightly gets worried or perhaps think how the hell am i gonna keep up with this guy.
You are so wrong,do u even play guitar man, the man you're talking here is Greg how. He plays jazz, fusion , rock, metal , blues, Latin, funk. Based on what ur statement here. I think it is obvious where you level of guitar ability is at. It's the funniest thing I've heard that grag can't keep up with PG. My goodness
@@Brandonfunky I'm yet to know Greg Howe good enough to judge him. But, for starters, your English sucks ass bro. Second, no Howe is not better than Gilbert. Not in terms of musicality, and definitely not in terms of technique. And if you think you are showing guitar knowledge with your comment, sorry my friend, you just showed how much you don't know about guitar.
That turnaround is really tough unless you have worked through that changes. It gets some of the best guitarists out there. I don't know why. Anyone who says that they can solo over that change easily is not telling the truth or they have never really tried. These guys are amazing!
amazing who don tlike -Greg Howe and Paul Gilbert , when i listen paul gilbert how shred the alternate picking or kick it out of greg wow what a song and are 2 man who know to improvise in a way in a big way nice and clean, or fast, or ..it make me throw me guitar....
I think some of you are missing the point..they're having a great time..that's all..no competing because there is no competion with guys of this caliber....
Man definitely much love to both of these outstanding musicians and to Jimi Hendrix for writing little wing and what passion they have for the guitar but the best version of this song was done by SRV. No disrespect intended.
I feel Greg's pain..I felt really uncomfortable playing a Fireman at a friend's place..it just feels like a uncomfortable guitar if you are not used to the big horn that sticks to your chest
Bro fuck these are the legends n really pray that they can live more 100000000 years to make these kindna music n make this world how to feel it n thank u vary whoever posted this video🙏
Cant believe I'm saying this but PG owned Howe in this. Maybe Greg was a little under-prepared but c'mon.. this is such a common jam song and he sounded off throughout. PG plays Little Wing like a Boss plus he is such a fun loving guy.
I think Howe totally outclassed him until they swapped guitars, pg has a huge database of scales/patterns/shapes etc, but he gets trapped in those shapes and it all starts to sound repetitive . Howe is much better at responding to the music without falling back to comfortable familiar patterns, shapes etc. I love both guys though
if you listen to PG's instrumental albums (Fuzz Universe is my fav), you'll hear that both PG and GH are equally talented and knowledgeable musicians...they just play different styles. Overall, PG is more classic rock/melodic and Greg is more jazz fusion/super shred oriented...but they're both great in their genres.
tornado600rr, No offense, but you sound like a fanboy who has just discovered fusion. I used to be the same actually, until I learned how to play in the style. (not implying that I think you can't or anything, I'm just saying that I personally realized that it wasn't some "magic god music" like I did before I started studying it).
I had two guitar instructional videos back in the late eighties. These two fine gentlemen were my celluloid teachers. Made me a fine shredder for a couple of intensive Metal practicing years.😊
They were just having fun. I like informal situations like that where you don't care about what people are going to say. Greg wasn't on his own guitar, we all know right.
Howe's thing has continuity and is faithful to Hendrix' style as well as infusing his own whilst Gilbert's thing always just sounds, more/less, like a bag of tricks.
Não existe guitarrista com a palhetada mais impecável que Paul Gilbert! Já o estilo de Greg é ,na minha opinião pessoal, mais bonito! E os dois, como bons norte-americanos, são feras no blues!
Paul Gilbert is simply put..God on guitar!!! Isn't anything he can't play genres etc!! Not sure who Greg Howe is but i'll check him out..not too shabby!
Yeah, Paul was the man for me too, but I discovered to Greg... And wow a new world coming.. Greg is a exceptional rock fusion guitar player, perfect in all ways.. Technically, feeling, speed, when I listen to guthrie govan first time I recognize the Greg influence over guthrie.
Greg Howe is an elite player. Much more harmonically sound than Paul. I guess he just wasn't into it. Right now after Frank Gambale, he is my favorite player
@Ayustria Salma That started with Miles Davis, he was influenced by a book called The Lydian Chroimstic Concept of Tonal Organization. But Chick took it further. Too bad he died. He was the greatest improviso I ever heard.
A questão não foi os dois genios tocando. Eles são matéria de revista de guitarra. A questão foi o Paul Gilbert trocar de guitarra com greg howen. Um tocando na guitarra do outro.
Mr Howe really was on point especially some of his licks going through the chord changes. You can tell Gilbert knew it too taking his normal familiar guitar away lol
That idea of guitar swapping was a disadvantage to Greg. He had a difficulty using that guitar of paul with a very long strap w/c ended up in having mistakes in his solos :) anyway just an idea :)
Jimkirk Corpuz yea dude i agree. he was lost on that giant ibanez neck. meanwhile paul was waltzing all over the carvin... wouldn't b surprised if he changed sponsors 😂
@@comgom5381 Not really. Paul was always known as that guy who could copy any guy's technique and music instantly because of his amazing ear. Paul had insane vocabulary of licks like a Recorder. He might lack creative originality, but he's making up for that these days Paul is known for playing other musicians licks on them. He could play Shawn Lane, Eric Johnson, Al di Meola
If Greg Howe is a 10 then I’m a 1 in comparison, still it’s comforting to see that even virtuosos like Greg is still uncomfortable in certain styles. Anyone who says that Greg is well versed in blues/ groove-blues, is putting Greg’s reputation above his performance. He clearly is out of his comfort zone here. That being said, he can play circles around Gilbert in his arena. This simply isn’t his arena. I think people also forget how great of a player Gilbert is. Just because you’re a guitar monster, doesn’t mean you can keep up with everyone.
Not only is Pual very tall, but his strap is adjusted to be really low, so that's basically one's worst nightmare. I had that happen to me on stage recently and it was a pain in the arse to play that thing with a 9.5inch fingerboard radius and neck as big as a baseball bat, when I am used to 14inch and a nice modern neck.
Both humble man and great musiciansHowe had to since the guitar belt was not just on the correct size for him but Pual gilbert seemed to be more flexible and adaptable to the new guitar
After this show Greg would fucken jam this song with one of his most complicated scales such as diminished Z# add combo wth augmented B# of whatever n he’ll be like Paul invite me again I’m ready budd
