Jem was the #1 Nielsen rated syndicated cartoon series in November 1986, and in 1987, it was the third most watched children's program in syndication with 2.5 million viewers weekly. Jem has aired in multiple countries including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, West Germany, Netherlands, United States, Italy and France. The show was nominated for the Young Artist Award twice, once in 1986 for "Exceptional Young Actresses in Animation: Series, Specials, or Film Features" for Samantha Newark's performance, then in 1988 for "Best Animation Series". The long-standing popularity of Mattel's Barbie franchise led to a competition between Hasbro's Jem product line and Barbie and the Rockers, a similar product line by Mattel. This resulted in reduced sales for both products. Hasbro discontinued the Jem toyline at the end of 1987 after it failed to meet sales expectations, but the series continued production and aired until 1988. Jem was partially released on DVD in multiple countries, with a complete set available for the first time in 2011. The same year, Jem began airing on The Hub in the United States, causing a significant increase in the ratings for the channel.
As a collector of all kind of music, new wave of british heavy metal, progressive metal, progressive rock and every hell kind of music there is, my female friend who is about 35-years old, she recommended me "Jem" from the 80s, and when i listen to this intro soundtrack, i fell in love with this type of "Glamour Rock", the animation of Toei Animation and the music of the artists and writers for this show is just so outstandingly fantastic, i envy those who lived in the 80s and saw this show!!!
This beats any friggin' anime. This is one ancient toon and intro that just RULES! The bass, the voices, everything. And I'm sayin' that as a guy :D Truly outrageous Contageous (sp)
I had no idea this show was lead by Christy Marx, the writer of the classic Sierra games "Conquest of Camelot" and "Conquests of the Longbow". AWESOME! Sounds like Debbie Gibson singing this theme song. :) Rad!

I just decided to return here after seeing Nostalgia Critic's review of the movie. I guess others were feeling like they needed to see the good version too after that.
I remember this show lol the girls would talk about this show like the boys would talk about the transformers. The 80's were the best!! It was cool that the girls had there own show too. I wish things would have stayed the same. Tv now really sucks.
Wow...somehow this 43 second intro has more heart than the whole live-action movie. In fact here is a small list of things that would make the Jem movie much better. #1 Grimlock from the Fall of Cybertron universe ripping apart insecticons. #2 The Avengers fighting off Ultron & his drone army. #3 Jem & Rio piloting Gypsy Danger to fight off kaijus.
In all honesty...i have to stop myself from singing this on the grounds that my friends would destroy me! A grown ass man humming this toon :) But i did watch a few episodes when i was younger!
It always amazed me how violent this cartoon was. The Misfits were literally trying to kill her; running her off a cliff, planting explosives in her house, yet they never got arrested, lol.
Termite30Jem villains are like Transformers G1 decepticons:A trio working for the main villain;The Misfits manager is the main villain(like Megatron),Pizzaz is the evil one and second in charge(like Starscream),Roxy is the dumb one(like Skywarp)and Stormer is the voice of reason and lesser evil of the group(like Thundercracker).
I thought that when they switched the intro, they lost a chunk of their fan base; the new intro referring to everyone as 'Jem Girls'. This classic intro seems more fun and adventurous - something anyone could get into.

i respect people like you. i don't see any wrong for man to watch this kind of cartoon as how us girls watch boy cartoon. so i think it just fair that way =D
I have no doubts there were boys who watched Jem back then despite being girly. No shame about that. The same goes for girls watching GI Joe despite being too many boys stuff. No shame about that either. Times had changed and no need for men to feel bad looking at girl cartoons back then and no need for women to feel bad looking at boy cartoons back then as well. It was all about bravery.
I can't wait for season 11 to come out on DVD. That's the one where Jem has a nose job, nurtures a crystal meth habit and turns up to an awards ceremony in a dress made out of bacon.
@jacobkosh, this was a million dollar intro , yes .....and some of the episodes did have a great message and had solid plots . I have mentioned in previous posts how the quality of the animation and stories suffered as the ratings declined . It does not take away the fact that this is one of the greatest animation series of our time . Not to mention the GREATEST jaw dropping and awe inspiring intros ever PERIOD .
@egnod when I was a kid, I didn't watch it secretly at all. No one said anything either. Cartoons were cartoons, I just saw whatever was on even if I didn't totally like it(most of the time). I did like Jem though. Like my third favourite show. The ideas that little boys can differentiate is flawed to me(even if its stars a girl). Especially back in the day when all cartoons seemed to be geared at boys, and there was nothing separating the supposed boy cartoons from the supposed girl ones.

You know, Hasbro already proved they could reboot their cartoons and have them be good. Transformers Prime, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Why not do Jem?

Regardless of the Hollywood crap-movie that's being made using this IP... Jem was roughly 300,000,000 times cooler than Barbie could have ever hoped to be.
I can imagine between 2002 and 2006 during the Atlantic City Lottery Show, Charissa Thompson humming the theme to Jem. Yes, she used to do that, quirky!
