We may need this. The San Diego Sheriff's Department has at least one LRAD for crowd control and any rational citizen would have to ask why they'd need such a thing. The answer can't be a good one. There's an easier way than THAT getup, though. Noise cancelling headphones, in a closed motorcycle helmet, with 30 dB in-ear fitted earplugs, will give more than enough protection against an LRAD and it's not bulky.

@s2gga Not as simple as that. The two layers of glass meet up with whatever frame it's put into therefore the vibrations will resonate noise. So the sound won't travel through the glass it will travel around it.

@s2gga not a brilliant theory. The man inside it wouldnt be able to breathe well even if you gave him breathing apparatus and the glass may shatter. you would need thick metal rods to hold apart the two layers that have a vauum between them, which defeats the purpose since sound travels brilliantly in metals (and the metal would deform).

@robdmhaze Yes I understand, but what 630MillionZombies is saying is that the amplitude required would be too high for a set of headphones. I'm not sure I agree with him though... Because you could use the headphones firstly as a set of ear-protectors, and then you would only have to supply the same amount of acoustic energy as was being transmitted through the ear-protectors... You could use extra-aural protectors with in-ear cancelling transmitters. Hell I don't know, but it's possible.

I'm not so sure that this would be as effective if there are loud noises from boats, engines, gunshots, etc all at the same time. I think thats one of the problems they ran into. In real world scenarios, it's pretty close to useless.

The BBC has really gone downhill. Look at how many visual effects they use in this clip - it's an entertaining piece of investigative journalism all by itself so why do they have to add loads of visual effects (fast edits, fast pans, focus-outs, colour changes, swoops, static noise effects etc etc etc) every 5 frigging seconds?

The planned use for these were on ships, such as commercial shipping. For example off the coast of Africa, As everyone should be aware of this problem by now. It's main purpose is to be used against armed pirates in small boats attempting to board commercial vessels and take hostages at gun point in lieu of millions in random. This is a less than lethal response to prevent boarding. The other option is to simply shoot at the pirates and either kill them or sink their boats and they drown. Piracy is a crime of the high seas. Imagine your family members working away from home on the high seas, ( that alone has it risks) and a bunch of dirty pirates want to hold your family members at gun point for money. Tell me who says yes to that? The movie captain Phillips demonstrates exactly what happens. So, we can shoot the pirates, (which some vessels now travel with security teams) or we can simply prevent it from happening. Which seems to be the better option.
