This is one of those episodes that separated Jem from all other cartoons. The contrast between the loss Kimber felt for her father, the strong bond Video had with father, and the inability for Pizzaz to connect with her father - lots of emotional ups and downs. This song perfectly captures the feeling of losing someone, yet always feeling like you're carrying a part of them with you.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. A couple of years ago, I lost my grandmother to dementia. She just to watch Jem with me when I was little.
i lost my mom to dementia in 2019. i feel for you. it's not easy losing a parent/grandparent. one of the worst diseases out there. this song reminds me of my time i spent with her.
My granddad died this morning and he was like a dad to me, then tonight as I was cleaning up dinner this song came to mind and I was humming it and then I began singing... Truly touching I listened to this and then cried, I would like to play it at the funeral so I think I'll suggest it.
Joe Spooky When my dad passed away 5 yrs ago, i knew that no one would let me play this at the funeral. Or Banee 's song. But I still thought of those 2 songs. I tried my best to keep certain songs on repeat inside my head. And hum it to my self when I was alone that day. Even to the point I said a jumble of lyrics from each song to him. Felt like a kid doing that. That first year was the toughest. After he died even after the funeral I couldn't stand to hear any songs about fathers. Especially my Jem show ones. Couldnt watch movies, or tv shows we had watched together. Not without Crying myself sick. Cry everytime I hear THIS song, along with "Something is missing _in my life" , "A father should be" & STARLIGHT. (Which is next on RU-vid's random playlist lol) But like Kimber I'm Okay. I used the Magic in the Music. This show alone has helped Me more than anyone could of Imagine. Thank You for reading listening to this rant. Adieu
My condolences & I'm sorry for your loss Had already been said by others. It's 2 yrs for u. I feel those sentences while meaningful gives little comfort. I do hope and pray you have been able to work thru the sadness. Keep your grandfather alive in your heart and in your memories. LOVED ONES ARE ALWAYS WITH US In that way.
This music sequence really shows just how different things were between the two families, as it appears Mr. Gabor and Phyllis/Pizzaz drifted apart and their relationship went horribly wrong somewhere along the way (apparently after her mother had left them as when she was little it looked like they were close once as the flashback shows) and at odds with each other. They didn't have the kind of close relationship after a point the way Emmett had with his blood and foster girls all through his life, as shown in the flashbacks at 0:49-0:52 throughout the years with Jerrica and Kimber in particular, showing their closeness with him from the time they were very small girls all the way up to adulthood after he was dead and gone just prior the start of the series (as it kicked off with his funeral) and the difference compared to Gabor and his only daughter is quite a revelation. The dejected look Gabor has at 0:47 after she turns and walks off (and the pained expression Pizzaz has herself in that moment) while the Holograms are playing is a clear sign of the rift between father and daughter, as even after losing it earlier and telling her he's done he can't help but reflect on what had happened between them and regrets to some degree that they grew apart and can't get along now, even to the point of merely being in the same room together.
Let's not forget about Riot and his father, even though the Stingers didn't make an appearance until the third season of the series. Riot and his father were at odds with each other, until Jem eventually talked them into reconciling with each other, making peace, putting the past where it belonged. In the past. Food for thought.
People have mixed reactions to that episode. Specifically whether or not Pizzazz was just such an absolute brat that Gabor couldn't take it. Or whether Pizzazz was a justifiably angry little girl who needed her father's love and guidance to get through a tough time of her life, and he decided that distracting her was much better then dealing with it himself. I won't lie. After a while the Misfits were the reason why I watched the show. They actually had issues that weren't solved immediately.
Speaking as someone with a father I find it hard to connect with, it's both, though probably more the latter. In my specific personal case, me & my Dad emotionally estranged when I was a teen, and he treated me with dismissiveness and disdain during those important formative years, wrecking my trust in him. Now as adults he suddenly wants to (re)connect, realising that he might need my physical care in his old age, and he doesn't understand why that offends me and why I can't let him in to do that, why he hasn't really earned it and it seems like he's using me at his convenience. Putting in the hard emotional work when it matters with kids/teens is so crucial, because we carry those memories with us into our own adulthood and future.

@pendafen7405 I don't know your story. But everyone has done something that they regret. Things that they wish they have done differently. And it would be nice that we all treat people the way that we would like to be treated. Meaning forgiving those who don't deserve it as that's a sign of grace and love. Can't hope for a peaceful world if you too act how the world wants you to act and not forgive those who have done you wrong. True Peace can only be achieved if we all forgive. But forgiveness doesn't have to mean acceptance. I think you should try to understand your father as there might be a side to his story that you don't know. But like I said I don't know what happened but whatever he says will impact the next stage in your relationship. Forgiveness isn't just something for him but it's also something for you mentally and spiritually Forgiveness can help you understand God. As we all sinned and Rebelled against God. Even though we don't deserve God's forgiveness and grace we still can receive it. Forgiveness is beautiful. It works better than fighting fire with fire. But Just keep in mind that just because you forgive doesn't mean you have to put up with any bs
This is so sweet. What I also love is that even Clash (a friend of The Misfits) is applauding for Jem and the Holograms (before they sing and after they finish). :)
somehow I can't help but think; that if they had made an ep about Pizzazz reuniting/confronting with her mother, it would end the same as with the ep riot's hope, greatly improved &a better understanding of the character,
I don’t think it would’ve ended that way I mean it’s literally a parent giving up her child, it would also be a serious and realistic topic if they didn’t make up.
I’ve been binging the series lately and this was the first episode that made me cry and think a lot more about the characters and their struggles. (After this I would end up crying very easily at this show lol) It felt like the turning point where they were willing to dig into some deeper emotional stuff while still keeping up the fun campy aesthetic and mood. It finally fully addressed Kimber’s side if grieving and even have some background on Pizzazz. It was nice stuff! I’m seeing a lot of talk about Pizzazz and her father in the comments as well so, here’s my take Pizzazz’s mom left when she was young, and it made her jaded and hate everything. Her father, not knowing how to handle such a way of grieving, spoiled her with material items instead of nurturing her feelings. Leading to her to not only be spoiled, but have her “everyone else is pointless” attitude reaffirmed. He wasn’t a piece of trash raising her, he didn’t spoil her because of any bad intention, he just didn’t know what else to do and the result wasn’t good. Despite their issues at the beginning of the episode Pizzazz actively wants to do something nice for her father. Asking him if he wants go do something fun for fathers day, which he brushes off and even assumes she won’t pay for herself. So for once I don’t actually blame her much for being super upset when he suddenly shows up to an event she’s crashing suddenly not busy and hanging out with The Holograms. Even having Kimber holding onto his arm. It’s really one of the few times Pizzazz is justified in being upset, something even The Holograms can tell because Shana tells her father to try talking it out with her instead of automatically assuming it’s hopeless. So 2 sentences in he says she’s hopeless. Yeah, are we shocked she is the way she is still orrr? Even in later episodes she’s seeking is approval and wants to make him proud. Despite hiccups she wants an actual emotional attachment and emotional nourishment. Something she was trying to offer and get on Father’s Day. Something she didn’t really get growing up, seeeee we seein the sad loop here? In short they both kinda suck in this dynamic. Neither of them had malicious intent for the other, but neither of them help their situation and keep on repeating patterns that slowly sour what bond they still have. One of them offers an olive branch, the other cuts it down. They’re both responsible for the way their relationship is and neither of them want to take responsibility. Yes Pizzazz’s father raised her to be like this (accidentally) but she’s still a grown adult that needs to take responsibility for her own issues. And we know her father isn’t the only issue going on with her, it’s way past him at this point and he’s no longer an excuse. He’s an explanation, but not an excuse. Not like she feels like she needs an excuse, she feels like any wrong she does is justified because everyone else sucks and is beneath her. Hm, wonder why she thinks that
Great comment. I really feel for Pizzazz here. Her own dad brushing her off on Father's Day, and then turning up at an event she was at with her rivals, showing he DID have time after all, is MASSIVELY hurtful, even if it wasn't intentioned. Her anger is entirely justified. Despite coming across as a cartoonish villain, Pizzazz is actually one of the most complex characters on the show, and she didn't deserve the pain she had to experience here😢
This made me cry from the bit when pizzazz dad hands went away from each other and when it was through the years joy and tears and when they were growing up.
What never made sense, to me, is that Emmitt also raised Aja and Shana, but we never got to see him with either one. No wonder people forget that they're foster sisters to Jerica and Kimber.

I always wondered how they still had all these pictures of their dad when their house burned down in the first and second episode.... Maybe the writers thought people forgot about that? I don't remember a scene where synergy printed them out either lol.
Such a beautiful song, the only thing that i'd change, or add in this case, is Shanna and Aja with Jerrica, kimber and their father. At the end of the day, they all were like sisters, and he was a father for them both too, especially after Jacqui's death. Anyways, Still being one of my favorite songs .

A lot of Jem episodes were kind of cheesey. But I found this one to be very profound, touching on subject matter that was quiet mature for a kids cartoon.
It's never really explained but in the episode Out of the Past, when they are reading their father's diary, he talks about being ill and how the doctor's say he doesn't have long. So maybe it was cancer or something like that.
