Jemima Kirke On Letting Go of Girls and Getting Out of Her Own Way

Actress Jemima Kirke, Best known as Jessa on HBO’s Girls, is often ascribed the same carefree spirit as the character she portrays on the show. Plainly put, that is not true. Outspoken and unflinchingly self-aware, Jemima explains in her interview, “One of the reasons I was hired for Girls was because of a persona that I have, and some sort of brightness they wanted in the show. It wasn’t an ability I had. That made me both feel shitty about myself, and gave me a big ego.”
Watch how stumbling onto a hit TV show forced Jemima to work through her self-importance by finding fulfillment in commitment (on Girls, in motherhood and in her own art) as she looks to life beyond Jessa.

it's interesting that the producers (and Jemima Kirke herself) think that she is nothing like her character Jessa, because from her interview I think there are actually more parallels (in character) than differences. Also, it's odd to ascribe to Jessa a "carefree spirit" because that is exactly what she is not: it's her act- that she doesn't care, that she is so chill, that she fucks up and fucks around with her own and other people's lives and that's fine by her- but in reality she not only cares deeply but also suffers deeply from this her inability to "get her shit together", be "normal" and "grow up". In the end she actually turns her life and attitude around based exactly on those insecurities and overcoming them in a constructive manner by getting her degree and working a lot on herself to be able to understand, embrace and be more compassionate of other people, their problems and own insecurities. Jessa is easily the most complex and most interesting character on the show and played magnificently by this brilliant and just as complex and interesting actress. I wish her much success in her future endeavors and also just much simple human happiness in life.

KnigoLiebe if you are interested try listen to one the podcast "women of the hour" also on RU-vid, there is one episode where Lena Dunham and Jemima talk about their friendship (they've been friends for many years before girls), and how Lena somewhat based the character Jessa on Jemima, and how this has been very ambivalent for jemima to play. Very honest and interesting. I'll try and link below (otherwise try search for "women of the hour friendship bonus episode jemima kirke")

I felt like a true intruder watching this. And I'm not talking about the exterior nudity at all. It's amazing how honest she's being, how vulnerable she lets herself get. That's f***ing brave! It's so uncommon to see it in interviews, it almost feels wrong. But no, it's not wrong. I wish the best for her and her family, I hope she has a lot of moments of happiness and feeling whole.

Sharing all of that in an interview it's so brave, I feel so much respect for her. Sometimes we see people on tv thinking they have a perfect life, being happy, having money, a partner, children, etc. Hearing all of that from someone who is famous really gets to my heart. Sending her tons of love and positive vibes.

Thank you so much for this interview. The honesty is felt & truly impactful. To hear another woman being open with feeling the chronic dissatisfaction of day to day, the fear of past and present was such a relief. As always, the most lovely questions were asked and the answers that were offered were beautifully raw.

The extent of this woman's self awareness is incredible. Thank you. I understand myself better now because of you.
