Girls actress Jemima Kirke (known as Jessa Johansson in the HBO series) addresses the topic of women in art (or the lack them).
She looks at the changing role of female artists in a male dominated art world over the centuries - and how some of them eventually took on the establishment in the 1970s.
So far in this series - part of Tate's quest to bring art to a wider audience - our video team has collaborated with the likes of Frank Skinner, Alan Cumming and Sally Phillips to bring you crash courses in Performance Art, Pop Art and Shopping for Art.
Other films coming up in the series include one on Surrealism presented by Peter Capaldi, aka Doctor Who!
Unlock Art is a collaboration between Tate and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts.

One of my classes last week spent the entire latter half of the session just talking about Lee Miller, and she really is a fascinating person. Apparently her son has been trying to get a script about her life greenlit for years and I really hope such a film is made one day.

wow... that woman's exhibition that got shut down because of the way she portrayed one man.... it's so ridiculous and just shows these double standards that have been happening for such a long time. Women get portrayed like that all of the time, they are always either oversexualized or told to be good and not sexual. A man gets portrayed in a sexual way ONCE and all hell breaks loose.

Wow! Thanks so much, this is eye opening. I thought women never did paint considering there's no mention of them in history. I thought they were probably never allowed to.

"...no mention of them in history". There has been mention of female artists in history from Sappho to Abramovich. Instead of admitting your surprise at discovering women in art, why don't you admit you know nothing of art history.

Peter Hackett Wow why do do you have to be so rude? Who spit in your cheerios? I never claimed to be an art historian, but yes I do know some art history. We've all heard of Michelangelo, DaVinci, Raphael, Botticelli, Durer, Bellini, Caravaggio, but sorry never heard of female artists of the time.

I love Jemima Kirke and the role she plays on the T.V. series "Girls". But what I love most is that she has taken part in a very real subject as women and art. I am working on a MFA and I can not agree more with this topic. As for the racists/trolls that have their comment below; we need to find a way to creatively paint them out of the picture and move on to a brighter future with women and the arts.

The role of women in art history has often been marginalized, but their contributions are indispensable. As we strive for equality, let us not forget that true progress in art is marked by the inclusion of all voices.

+Fallingslowly21 I think women of color should not be called "women of color" when during a debate about WOMEN and MEN. The women includes ALL women, tall, short, black, white, ginger, brunette, Asian, ALL women throughout history. STOP picking out " women of color" out of the women cathegory. Urgh
@katebishop4214
@katebishop4214 8 лет назад
+Katalin Bohdán that would be fine had they mentioned women of colour artists in the film, but they didn't, and they could and should have because there have been so many original, influential and talented women of colour in the arts. It's ridiculous to say that it's wrong to divide women in defence of this film, when that's exactly what the film itself does. Jemima says something about women being marginalised, but this film has marginalised women of other races.

Claude Cahun actually didn't identify as female- while Cahun used the feminine pronoun 'elle' in French, she described her gender as 'fluid' or 'neuter'. So while she may have been assigned female at birth, her adoption of a masculine name and presentation was not in order to masquerade as a man to gain artistic success, but as a part of her personal identity, and challenging gender norms as a part of her artistic practice!

"where are the white women artists" there, I fixed it for ya!
@AnCatDubh0
@AnCatDubh0 8 лет назад
+lido pimienta true, non-white people are almost completely absent from art history, so to be a woman AND poc you have almost zero chances of making the cut. I think this is starting to change though, hopefully. But tbh white women aren't represented either so we're kind of all in the same boat here.
@ButterflyLullabyLtd

Women need to stop drawing nudes, and demand respect. Start buying real art by women that don't need to sell their soul to make it in the Art Industry. Men want women to draw nudes, don't fall for the trap. And remember the Human Trafficking problem is a pandemic; therefore, we need to paint more innocently and stop feeding this sick market.

This is a good start, but can't help to notice that if and when women will be more included in museum shows, it will obviously start by including white women from the USA/UK, like Jemima Kirke. Nothing against her, I think she's a great artist/painter... but did you really need a white woman to say all of this, Tate?
@samanthawright7053
@samanthawright7053 3 года назад
White women face oppression too. Women of color absolutely deserve a voice in these matters but to disregard a woman because she's white is racist and wrong.

This doesn't seem like it's the biggest problem that anyone anywhere is facing. I'm sorry it's just you are fighting for women's artistic roles throughout history while there are still women who aren't allowed to drive, vote and live independently.

"it's always men who write the history books" So are you saying women can't write history, or never have? How can men be responsible solely for one thing but not another? Isn't this selective and inductive reasoning?

The ratio of female to male in art history is a reflection of excellence not gender discrimination.
