*Falso, En España le decimos Miércoles. Eso de Merlina solo sucede en latinoamericana porque allí siempre le cambian el nombre a todos los personajes.*
Dude I can’t with Latino parents who don’t teach their kids Spanish due to fear of discrimination or whatever bc ironically if you want your kids to be successful you’d want them to have all the skills they can easily obtain. If she had known Spanish she could’ve acted in Spanish dramas &movies as well. Yes, I get it at the end of the day Jenna got successful either way, but she’s not the only Latina out there who has dealt with this.
As a latino who grew up not being taught a sufficient amount of spanish, I feel for her. But, I’ve also been learning spanish on my own now for 8 years at this point and have just reached a point of decent proficiency. It’s very difficult to pick up when you’re older compared to as an adult but I hope that other “no sabo” kids get the urge to learn, because it really is very fulfilling

Tell me about it because when I was a little kid. My family would speak English. I did not know a single damn word in Spanish. And I'm half Mexican and Guatemalan. So I had to learn to speak in both different ways. Spanish. I had to learn to speak the Mexican side. Spanish and the Guatemalan side Spanish. Because even though they're both very similar it's spoken very differently. Luckily I was at a good age when I learned. Because I started to learn when I was 11 years old. Now as a grown 31 year old. I can speak a 100% fluidly. And I'm able to distinguish both my Mexican side and Guatemalan side Spanish. What are the things that I do say is that you never stop learning
@@case4896its not just the accent but her intonation sounds so foreign it makes is it really hard to understand. But if u know the what she is saying beforehand. She sounds really cute
My parents didn't teach my brothers or myself Spanish, not because of discrimination but because they didn't want us to know what they were saying. They've come to regret that decision.
And that’s the sad part, when parents don’t teach their language, do their children, they are literally closing a door and a world to them. They’re denying them part of their heritage, part of their identity, and many opportunities are literally lost due to the loss of the language.
I think she said that her mom would try to speak in spanish but sense her dad doesnt speak it he didnt like feel excluded so she stop speaking to them in spanish
Hmm that makes me think that’s what my parents did. They look at me now and don’t know why I don’t know Spanish but I only remember English being spoken to me

Remember that Spanish is not her first language. She grew up speaking English in her house, school and work. The only Spanish she would know would be related to household things such as food and simple things: Dame agua, quiero arroz, tengo hambre, etc. If you study sociolinguistics you might understand.
she keeps pushing the representation thing like crazy while knowing very little about the culture but claims to be a representative of it. It's messed up. She's a faker.
I love languages, even though I'm not so good at them. But my 6 years old daughter already speaks Spanish, French, and English. I teach her some words in Portuguese and Italian, too. It's impressive how kids learn languages so easily. It's absolutely dumb to deprive them of learning, especially your mother language!
I bet she wasn’t depriving her ,just it wasn’t spoken as much as English so she caught more with English because probably when she when out mostly spoke English when she when to school read books it was in English ,you can’t get mad that there live in country mostly with people who speak English
I'm fluent in both languages and i don't care if someone speaks Spanish or not. People will do anything to put others down just to feel better about themselves.
Same bro. I'm Mexican born and grew up there, then moved to US and my siblings were born here in US. I can't stand when other Mexican born people look down on the US born "Mexicans" (Mexican American). I can't stand it, pisses me off. My siblings are the same as me regardless if they were born across that imaginary fkn line.
As the first generation of my Colombian family born and raised in the USA the judgment that is cast on those who either don’t know Spanish or aren’t fluent is something that has always bothered me about my own community and culture.even if you want to learn Spanish and actively try to use it they also make fun of you because you’re pronunciation isn’t perfect. It feels like you’re never good enough. I can speak, read and understand Spanish but my grammar and pronunciation isn’t always perfect and this makes me uncomfortable to speak Spanish around others that aren’t my family due to the likelihood of judgment. It creates an environment where you feel to “white washed” for the Latin community but to “ethnic” for white people.stop judging others for not being as Latino as you’d like them to be . Everyone is their own person.
No te juzgan a ti,sino a tu padre.
Hispanic parents should seriously teach their kids Spanish. I knew a whole Mexican family who couldn’t speak Spanish because their grandmother who first came to the country refused to teach her kids spanish therefore the grand kids weren’t able to speak Spanish and they just killed their culture basically and was very Americanized all because there was a stigma back then.
My friend is from El Salvador but born in America and his parents didn’t teach him Spanish so he doesn’t understand it while my parents are from Colombia but I was born in America and they taught me Spanish now I’m bilingual I speak English and Spanish and I’m looking forward to learn Italian French and Portuguese
I mean agree that parents should teach Spanish , I also think we should’t look down on the ones who don’t know I mean a lot people in this would just know on language and that’s ok
I love her. I'm half puerto rican and although she's half Mexican and Puerto Rican, it just makes me happy that I share an ethnicity with her lol. Mexicans are cool too though ✌
Well Mexican is a cultural group/nationality and Puerto Rican is a cultural group too, so there's no such thing as half, only this AND that. That is to say, I don't know about Puerto Rican culture, but culturally, she is not Mexican. To be Mexican culturally, you have to practice the culture and one of the main things of Mexican culture is speaking Spanish. Does she speak Spanish? No, so I doubt she would even practice other cultural Mexican things

Así que Selena Gomez sólo tiene de latino en la apellido la amamos de todos modos y la aceptamos como latina❤ Pd. She’s definitely not the only one dealing with this. Plenty of children are deprived of their parents’ mother tongues for different reasons (all are dumb and just excuses, because it is hard work to truly pass on a language). I am lucky my mother knew how important and enriching it is to pass on your native language, so she only spoke hers to us. We’re native in both community and minority language, since we were very young. Speaking daily, meeting up with other natives, reading everyday, music, radio theatre/films, calls or trips to see the family, etc are all very important tools that will allow your child to learn the minority language. They can learn it provided you give them the grounds to do so. There’s no excuse not to do it. And on a last note: I have never met an adult that said “I’m so glad my parents didn’t teach me their mother tongue!” they all either resent or feel disappointed their parents didn’t try or continue trying when challenges came up.
Very well said. Language is not inherited, it’s taught. And children learn by example, the best way to teach them a language is to show them what that language means.
My parents beat my a** when I was 12 to prohibit 2nd language in the home, and practice 1st language so we "wouldn't sound stupid" when we grew up. Very grateful for that 16 years later! Lot more money and job opportunities +
Your parents had the biggest inferiority complex n they were the stupid ones for depriving their kids of a great source of culture. It seems that all that matters to em is $$$
As a first-generation Mexican American in my family. My first language is Spanish, I started learning English when I started school. And it took me YEARS to start speaking in full sentences. I guess I was just really slow and picking up the language, but now I'm fluent in both. I obtained the Seal of Bilitiracy on my High School Diploma and although I do use English more. My preferred language is Spanish.❤🇲🇽
To be fair, Latina just means heritage is from south or Central America or Mexico. many kids don't learn the language but learn the culture so its fine. the only issue is lingual communication. for myself, I am Sri Lankan and cant speak Sinhalese but I'll probably smoke any non-Sri Lankan in cultural knowledge and habits. Its likely the same with her because you learn culture through proximity not lingually, and she knows words, she likely has no idea on grammar structure and stuff like that. I am learning Korean and I fuck up sentences so many times because I fuck up grammar or subtle pronunciation changes due to syllable rules.

The Addams Family originates from Spanish speaking creators. "Merlina" is a twist on both Miercoles, Spanish for Wednesday and the female form of Merlin The Wizard, implying her role as a sorceress
I don’t get why people are bashing on parents for “not teaching” their children Spanish when they hear someone struggling to speak it. A lot of us grew up speaking Spanish at home and struggle as adults. You learn English in school and that’s all you speak at the school, banks, grocery stores, at work. Of course the English is gonna be a lot stronger. I only speak Spanish with my mom on the phone for maybe 2 minutes a day if we’re not busy. I try to speak it when I can, watch Spanish shows, teaching myself to read in Spanish. When I’m around family I try my best to not speak any English and if I don’t know how to say something in Spanish, I ask. Especially if you don’t live in parts of the U.S where there’s a strong Hispanic population it’s even harder but she’s trying
In Jenna's case she seems to not even understand a word of Spanish. And on top of that she was raised in La Quinta, where there's a lot of Hispanic people and it's not too far away from Mexico. With both her parents being of Mexican descent and living in that place, I'm actually surprised she has such a hard time with Spanish. Almost as if they made her live in a "Spanishless" bubble on purpose.
