Such good writing, and notice how much slower the pace is-they trusted their viewers to have fully-functioning attention spans. I'd give anything for shows like this today.
I really love these longer scenes that flesh out characters & give us extraordinary dialogue in the process. Almost like watching a wonderful play. My ADD plays up having to endure the hyper-pace of the brief, fleeting scenes of the soaps of today. No thanks (Give me classic ATWT, GL, EON or AW any day). The golden age of soaps beats them all by a mile
You said a mouthful regarding the attention span comment. Nowadays (on the few soaps that are left), they'll cut away and then rejoin a scene at least several times (cutting away to other happenings in the episode). God forbid anyone has the attention span to follow it through and watch a 4-minute scene without any interruptions!
@@sb61fury Also canceling ATWT was a mistake too. In 2006 or so, I met the adult Rick Bauer. food shopping at Whole Foods in Ridgewood, NJ. It's a shame he left GL.
This is awesome! I watched the Guiding Light as long as I can remember. Roger and Alan were my favorites. The days are much dimmer now since it’s demise.
Fun fact: Ted Le Plat, who played Andy Norris, was the son of noted dancer Marc Platt, who had a part in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." His dad died at the age of 100 in 2014. Ted is 75 now.
His father played one of the Pontipee brothers in the film. I am trying to remember which "Pontipee" did he play. I have to go back and watch the movie.
I watched GL in the 50's starting at four. I had a disabled uncle who loved the show. There were four fifteen minute stories between 12 and 1pm. I kept up with the show until it went off in 2009. I still miss the show. There were many great storylines.
@@shirellstevenson5976 That was the last straw for me, along with the clone story. I was sad when GL was cancelled but it was a shell of its former self so it was pretty much a mercy killing.
Sofia Landon as Diane Ballard was excellent! It was a shame that she was written out of the show. She should have taken over Spaulding Enterprises. That would have been a great story.
I didn't know Markand offed Diane. I wonder what his rationale was. He had to have noticed what a great character she was. Maybe his rationale was that she'd make for a good murder mystery.
Wow! I missed this when it first aired as it was preempted for a special report on the hostage crisis in Iran that showed nothing but an empty airfield and I NEVER thought I'd get to see it.
The "Karen Wolek" Court storyline on OLTL was riveting as well. This storyline won Judith Light (Karen) a Daytime Emmy Award. She too, hid devastating secrets that were revealed in the courtroom, and the outcome was explosive.
@@donnasreviewandrandomthoug6504 I remember. He was also very green. I honestly didn’t think that the actor Robert Newman would be kept for very long, but his acting slowly improved, and he really bloomed into a good actor opposite Kim Zimmer’s Reva.
Also RIP to Don Stewart. Also RIP to Lisa Brown. She was also in Aretha Franklin's Video for Everyday People by Sly & The Family Stone that Michael Jackson's Estate owns the Catalogue to.
RIP Geraldine Court, Jerry Ver Dorn, and Chris Bernau. Also both Chris and Geraldine were Gay and sadly Chris Bernau became one of the First Soap Actors to die of AIDS. They acknowledged The Deaths of Jerry Ver Dorn and Lisa Brown in the UK Press as well since Guiding Light & As The World Turns was broadcasted in The Netherlands with Subitles as well as Italy where it's known as Sentieri.
+Black Blake You know who also went through a lot of Eyeglasses was The Late Anne Kirkbride (1954-2015) who began playing Diedre on Coronation St The UK Soap Opera from 1972 until her Death in 2015. She started wearing Glasses around in the 1980's, but some of them were outrageous.
I know right. Another thing I would have loved would be for Leah Bauer to get ready to go away to College continue the Boudreau Family Tradition of going to a HCBU (Historically College Black University), and before she goes, Grandpa Ed gives her a Lamp and she's also given a Chess Set in memory of her Great Great Grandfather Frederick Bauer. Better yet, I would have loved for Leah to go to Germany to find her Roots and find some long lost relatives.
It really boggles my mine how glorious this show was and then certain writers ruined it rest in peace Maurice Benard the best alan Spalding ever sad that cancer took him away
So much happened in the past several years. Mike Bauer "matured" and was a better advisor to his Protege then he was to George Hays his former Mentor when he started out then played by Gary Pillar. Then Mike and Ross Marler went from being bitter adversaries to such good friends when he returned for the 60th anniversary. Can you imagine how surreal it must have been for Don Stewart to work with Chris Bernau (RIP) then Ron Raines.
And within 3-4 years, pretty well all of these characters were gone. Future executive producer Gail Kobe decimated the cast and remade it into something that paled in comparison. :-(
Made into a mini Texas, where she came from. Texas was a great show at the end. But it never transferred over to anything good at GL. And I loved Pam Long....but as head writer she ruined it too.
@@baconbap Yup, there was a reason Texas was cancelled - no one was watching it OPPOSITE Guiding Light. They should have never remade GL into Texas 2.0.
The Jennifer Richards ( the late, Geraldine Court) on trial for Lucille Wexler's death was a great storyline written by the great headwriter, Doug Marland.
You know what's so eerie. Jessica Leccia (Ex-Natalia) was only Five when this Storyline was being played and later she and John Wesley Shipp worked on One Life To Live.
Alan remembering Jane Marie Stafford/Jennifer Richards was similar to when Eric Forrester recognized his College Sweetheart Beth who was a waitress at a Fundraiser for Diabetes.
i remember it took months, if not years, to get up to this point where the true identity of jennifer richards was to come out. also, i remember it being preempted by the release of american hostages by iran ! i remember being mad lol.
Did you know Kristin Vigard was the very first choice to play Annie on Broadway? I saw a movie about twenty years about it and she was already practicing and the other Andrea McCardle was brought in and poor Kristen was let go. She was interviewed and she teared up remembering it. I couldn't imagine a twelve year old child being fired before she even started. I hadca book by Jackie Cooper and he didn't like Andrea. He said she was a stuck up spoiled brat on the sey of Judy Garland in a made for TV movie.
I agree, I like Hope, but she needs to understand that this all happened even before Alan put a ring on it. Yes, the news is shocking, but it was twenty-something years ago. Just welcome Amanda to the family, and keep it moving.
@@mariellclement8092 Hope never saw "Stability" with a Man. Her Grandfather & Uncle were both Alocholics, she became one as well, then she had a Bad Relationship with Alan Michael.
Do any of you remember when Nina Cortlandt found out that Monique Jonvil was her real Mother Daisy when Dr. Cliff Warner went on trial for the Murder of Sybil Thorne. She passed out.
The UK Court Scenes are also brilliant. One of the most memorable was on Emmerdale (1972-Present) when the King Brothers Matthew, Jimmy and Carl were on trial for the murder of their father Tom, some evidence was tampered with so the case was thrown out. The Lawyers wear gowns with white smocks and Wigs. During the testimony they have to stand. Then it was discovered that Carl (The Youngest & Favorite) did it because his Father kept interfering in his private life as well as his brothers.
I don't know who the extra was that played the female jurist starting at 18:44, but I'd like to say your hair is exquisite. And that means something, even a few decades later.
It's amazing how a lot of those characters changed from being bad to upstanding citizens of Springfield. Ross, Nola, Vanessa,Josh. The later Amanda turned bad girl.
You know what's so eerie. Chris Bernau Alan Spaulding #1 was Gay in Real Life and Geraldine Court (Jennifer Richards/Jane Marie Stafford) was a Lesbian as is Maureen Garrett (Ex-Holly) who was in a relationship with a Woman for the past 20 Years.
Do you not know that a great deal of these soap stars are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or involved in interracial relationships? All the taboos, or former taboos!
@@jeffreysworld9268 Did you ever watch any UK Soaps like Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Eastenders & Hollyoaks. Alot of US Folks are watching them now and they love them.
I don't remember half of these people. They changed actors ; Alan, Ed, Amanda. I never watched it back then. And I can remember the actress who played Hope as Greg's girlfriend on The Brady Bunch.
Don't you notice that Canada as well as Paris, France was the place that a lot of Characters went to live. Hart Jessup, Fletcher Reade, Bill Bauer who went under the name of Bill Moray.
laminage Thorne is running it in Paris and apparently he was with Taylor but then she reappeared and said they were broke up again, and that was a year ago. I really wish Thorne and Taylor were still on the show, they need them right now.
No matter who played Thorne ie Clayton Norcross 1987-1989, Jeff Trachta 1989-1996 or Winsor Harmon 1996 2015, it was always The Ridge & Brooke Show. I hated how Thorne took a backseat to Ridge. Also, Thorne, Ridge & Eric's biggest problem was that they always got with each other's Women. Ridge/Caroline/Thorne, Ridge/Brooke/Eric, Thorne/Brooke, Thorne/Taylor. I think that Thorne did this was because he wanted to prove he was as good as Ridge. Remember how in the early days Ridge would tell Thorne to back off but he never did. He married Caroline and their marriage was based on a House Of Lies.
laminage They're still doing it, but now it's even worse. Bill/Brooke/Katie, and Caroline 2.0 is very annoying, she's been with Thomas, Rick, and now she's with Ridge. A new house of lies has formed and Thomas and Caroline share a baby but Ridge wanted to punish Thomas and said the baby was his. Now Brooke has called it quits (for now I guess) to Bill and it looks like Brooke and Ridge are going to get together again, but they shouldn't have broke them up in the first place. I liked all the Thornes, Winsor and Clayton were the most attractive to me, but Jeff was the most talented, because he could sing. Lord I miss Thorne and Macy, or even Thorne and Darla, Thorne period. They made a big mistake getting rid of core characters, like Thorne, Taylor, Donna, and they killed off poor Aly for no reason, Thorne's only child, and they quickly moved on to another story. They introduced a new family, the Avants, and it looks like Brad Bell puts all his energy into them, you can tell when they are on, but they barely show them when they are not there, because soaps still put families of color on their own island, even though they are all connected, which is ridiculous because it's 2016, but that's another story. Truth be told, the Liam/Steffy/Wyatt triangle is so terrible I actually miss the Ridge/Brooke show. They've moved the jilted son role to Rick now.
Can you imagine how surreal it must have been for fans to know many years later both Geraldine Court & Chris Bernau were both Gay which is cool. In the 1970`s Don Stewart (Ex Mike Bauer #7 performed at ABC Affiliate WTEN in Albany, New York for a fundraiser.
It’s so funny how about that a baby being born out of a wedlock was a big scandal and caused that girl to run out of the court. Nowadays it’s no big deal.
UK Courtroom Scenes on Soaps are just as surreal. The Lawyers have to wear Wigs, A Smock and a Gown as does the Judge. The Witness has to stand up throughout questioning and when they are convicted they are hauled downstairs like going into a Dungeon. Phooebe Dynevor's Mother Sally who plays Sally Metcalfe on Coronation Street went downstairs and cried over and over she didn't want to go to Prison.
Am I the only one who thinks Ted Le Plat is a dead ringer for David Allen Brooks (ex-Jim Dedrickson, EON). In fact I thought for years it was David Allen Brooks who played Andy Norris. Amazing. The resemblance is uncanny 🤔
I think that when the Judge announced that if there were any further interruptions in the courtroom, GL got interrupted by CBS News with the war in Iran/Iraq situation. The GL Community was uuuuuuppset.
Can anyone tell me who Jack is? The lawyer who told Jennifer that she has been officially released into Mike's custody? He looks like actor Michael Shea to me, but no record of him ever appearing on the show 🤔
when jennifer richards/jane marie stafford decided to move to Springfield to be manager of the Wexler household, did she know that Alan Spaulding lived in the same town? if yes, does that make sense/
It wouldn't have made a difference whether Amanda stayed in the Courtroom or not. Once she found out the truth, the end result would have been the same. She would've lost her baby. There was no escaping the truth.
Wow, this explains why Amanda was the "way" she was. You find out that your Real Mother had to identify you in Court, The Man that you thought was your Father was in fact your Half-Brother and a Much Older Man took advantage of a Seventeen Year Old Girl. It explains why The Spaulding Men always had a History of being Involved with a Brother's Wife. Olivia, Harley, Beth & Blake are living proof of that.
oh yes now i remember, but Alan also got involved with her as a younger guy, he and his father..wow. i thought they should have kept as Alan being the father, made her character much more sleazy.
Hope a grown woman acting like a big baby where did she grow up at a Covent Damm was she sheltered that much bye Mike she didn't know about life things that go on between boys and girls good Grief
Ah yes. Amanda Wexler Spaulding--one of so many children sired by Alan Spaulding, the classic womanizer. Let's see: Amanda, Alan-Michael, Gus, Phillip (not even really his!)--am I missing any?
Don't forget Peyton by Beth. However I think she's Rick Baue'rs Child. She looks a lot like him. Also remember that Amanda wasn't Alan's Daughter. She was his Half Sister by Brandon (Alan's Father). I wonder if she was raped or was it consensual.
@@ErickGainesSanders When Phillip had "died" Beth had threatened to take Lizzie and James and leave Springfield. Alan manipulated her and whined that he had nobody else, and since he and Gus were on the Outs, and then Alex wasn't around. With Beth, I think she was trying to "fix" what she couldn't "fix" with Bradley Raines. Both men were very abusive and manipulative. When Beth had an Affair with Dr. Rick Bauer (Mike's Nephew) and Alan found out he was furious.
I was 12 when this aired and in Junior High School. My grandmother was a loyal fan of all of the CBS daytime soap operas and I cannot count how many times I watched these shows with her when I was growing up. I remember watching this show and vividly remember watching all this unfold. This was the golden years of The Guiding Light and by 1985 the show’s storylines started wane and the characters started change and the amazing actors were let go. The producers started hiring actors based on their physical appearance and unfortunately their talent lacked any dynamic appeal. Yes there are some exceptions to the rule because Kim Zimmer and Beverlee McKinsey were both amazing. The storyline of Reva marrying he ex father in law and getting pregnant by him was too far fetched as well as Josh cloning Reva, when Reva was presumed dead. Bert Bauer’s death and the core family, the Bauers, were taken off the front burner was a sad time. In later years, Alan marrying Beth Raines was another bone headed move as was Vanessa Marrying the much younger Reardon was ridiculous. Also, Lisa Brown was probably the best actress in Guiding Light history in my opinion and gradually they moved her Nola character to the back burner as well and eventually left the show. She could have matured into another Bert Bauer in time and been an integral part of the show. Bette Davis gave her high praise as an actress when she wrote to Ms. Brown an encouraging letter. Bette was a huge fan of the show and of Lisa Brown. I was saddened by Lisa Brown’s passing of cancer. I’m so glad that there are people on RU-vid who have posted these videos of this once great show. I wish there were full episodes of Guiding Light from the 1970’s to at least the early to mid 1980’s.
I hated Reva and the Shayne clan. Yeah, Kim Zimmer could act, but I got sick of her sleeping with all they Lewis men and crying. They never should have made Lewis core family. Agree it went downhill after 85. One bright spot in the following years was Annie Dutton storyline. cynthia W. Was wonderful. That replacement, Annie, years later sucked. GL became Reva Shayne show😢
Hope's Mother was the Late Julie Conrad Bauer. Mike started dating her after his Marriage to Robin Lang got annulled. He dated Julie who was more Miss Rebound than Miss Relationship. He got her Pregnant, married her out of obligation than love, she had a breakdown may have suffered from Post Partum Depression and then killed herself in a Psychiatric Hospital.
Mike and young Hope moved to Bay City on Another World which was on another network...in Bay City he became attracted to the married Pat Randolph before returning to Springfield and Guilding Light!!
That's right. Another World was still trying to find an Audience. I think it was the First Crossover. Later on it was done on Y & R/B & B as well as AMC/OLTL.
That blond man looks creepy. The one talking to his mother. Who were they? I liked Katie and the " Illegitimate " child term sounds both stupid and cruel.
Boy this Andrew was a sicko. I remember seeing Barbara Berjer as Bridget on it's sister show another world. I hated her guts. She was always meddling with Jake & Vicky and Marley. Even when Vicky's identity was confirmed, I know she was upset she didn't get a taste of the Love Monetary Pie. Also I sometimes wonder if Jennifer was raped.
Isn't the date wrong? I was 9 when this happened, but I remember watching all of this with my mom, especially Amanda's collapse and Amanda in the ambulance - but everything being interrupted by Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt which was in March.
Jennifer was so bland... I can't believe Mike Bauer would prefer someone so boring when he previously dated more interesting women like Jackie, Elizabeth, and Renee before.
Why is Mike using the term "Illegitimate?" A baby is innocent. In situations like this, they're born out of wedlock. He's making the baby sound like it's worthless. Even on ATWT, they said that Ellen's baby was born out of wedlock. That was 1962.
