@pycellesbeard9728 The initial post was not "anti-Semitic", it was perceived to be "anti-Semitic." They thought he meant the Jews when he said "well they killed Jesus." What he said was a very old black saying that was meant to calm us from feeling especially singled out by evil doers. We use Jesus because of his innocence. Which is to say if a totally innocent loving individual like him could be killed, a regular person like me shouldn't expect to be exempt as marked for evil deeds. The Jews struggle with the stigma of having done the deed make them feel like he was poking at them.

As a matter of fact, even though cancel culture didn't start with black people, it became extremely popular within the black community online around 2019 and 2020 because of people's words and their actions towards black people. So just because a lot people have taken it to another level whereas people get canceled over anything said let's not pretend that all of them didn't need to their lose their jobs which is still happening.

As a person of color who grew up in the 90s, I was a huge fan of friends and I still am. I am not even remotely bothered in the slightest that the show features an all white cast with majority white characters. You see, I judge art based on its content. I don’t feel the need to racialize every aspect of my life; I imagine that it’s a very miserable way to live. But hey, apparently a lot of people like to do that nowadays and whatever floats your boat. I don’t get it, but you do you.

As someone who is also black and grew up in the 90s, I don't like to racialize things neither. However, this isn't Candy Land. Plus I watched lots of shows like Friends. But Friends was a little bit different. How is someone going to film a show in NYC and all you see is white people on the streets and in stores including the fact that some say the idea of the show came from the show called Living Single with a black cast which really doesn't bother me because that happens a lot. Plus Jennifer Aniston was trying to be slick because she was reffering to the recent incident even though she didn't say it about her liking a comment or something I believe Jaime Fox posted that offended someone and she got backlash for it.

i will push back on Friends. I grew up in the 2000s... late 90s. Yes Friends was a funny show... but Jennifer Anniston remains problematic! 1st of all, "Rachel" was the LEAST relatable character on the show!!! and the least likeable! 😂 Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Monica made the show.... hands down! 😀

That’s an interesting viewpoint and perfectly valid, employers tend to toss resumes into the trash if you have a police record and some jobs even need a clearance from police, like the security guard jobs I once had back in the 80s…and a movie I like starring Sandra Bullock called “The Unforgivable” portrays what life might be like for a felon….seems like a tough life. Decided to edit in that despite the prison jokes I can make I feel sorry for felons who want to go straight, as an agnostic it’s my opinion that even if Christianity is made up it exists for various reasons, like forgiveness from God even tho the world may never forgive you, or justice and punishment for someone like Mengele in the afterlife because of his war crimes and lack of punishment during his lifetime….

Another thing I would like to add is that the West Village has always been a majority white neighborhood in lower Manhattan. A close-knit group of 6 friends, some of whom were either related to each other or grew up in the same upper class suburban town, being all 1 ethnicity is not far-fetched.

When I was in school they taught that a boycott was a proud American pastime all the way back to English tea. But now that one of America's main exports is celebrity personality, boycotts have been rebranded as a pejorative. As if the public having and acting on a quasi-democratic opinion is somehow evil. Consequences exist, I'm sorry that its inconvenient. If you use the money i've given you to insult, hurt or legislate against me, my friends and others, I'm going to stop giving you my money as much as possible. Immediate redemption? no. You have to actually want it, work at it, change your actions, fix the problem, and move on from there. Its frustraing that so many people think they can just flip a switch and have what they want. Imagine being cheated on, does an I'm sorry really fix anything for you when they're poised to just do it again next week? IMO blaming cancel culture is a dog whistle for the old tried and true persecution complex. "I was a public homophobe and advocated my followers to take away fundamental rights of gays as Americans citizens. We are in a bad place in society; everyone is looking for everyone else to slip up so they can attack and ruin their life. We no longer tolerate anyone; if you make one human mistake to hurt the wrong person's feelings, you're done. Do people wonder why people are so isolated and angry? I come from Gen X, the generation everyone seems to ignore ever existed. We were the last generation to F-everything off without being filmed and destroyed for it. We had strong opinions and vocalized them; we had foul language in our music, and we sang along to it. We told each other to F-off, and we laughed about it seconds later. Now, you can't sneeze without someone calling conspiracy theories on you for being a COVID spreader. You can't criticize anything otherwise; you are a bad, mean person, so nobody is challenged to do better. It's created an intense environment full of fake people afraid to say how they feel about something. We need to be more balanced, and it's not making anyone happy. People need to start to learn how to have tolerance towards one another, so we have room to grow and evolve as individuals.

It is morbidly interesting how Republicans blamed the government for having an agenda or spreading fake news, saying government is not to be trusted, calling it things like the swamp all the way until it did something they agreed with. Once it said covid was over, Republicans became significantly less hostile towards the government. They completely disregarded that covid is still the #3 cause of death in America in 2023. Over 1 million Americans died from covid in large part because over half Republcians refused to be vaccinated. Failure to vaccinate prevented herd immunity. My hatred towards Repblicans for causing my friends to die from covid is justified. No one can turn back the clock and undo their deaths. It is absurd for you to want everyone to come back together and forget everything that has happened these last few years because you feel lonely now.

As millennial I can't indulge in any kind of pre-2016 nostalgia without being bullied for it because of cancel culture. I didn't even understand Aniston's quote. It sounded like she was soft admitting to "entertaining" Harvey Weinstein in her trailer. Meantime no sympathy over cancel culture from me unless I know the full context. Too many celebrities confuse being called out for being canceled. Though if she's being called out for starring in an all-white show in the 90s, contextually that's-- yeah, that's pretty lame of those calling her out. But that's not what her quote was talking about...

The 60's were a time of stereotypes and Jim Crow laws. It's clear that things needed to change. But the 90's went to the point of cancelling people over tiny infringements. The correct point is somewhere in between, somewhere that the majority agree. I have no idea how to find that point.

@@Anuchan I understand, but if memory serves, the '90s were a LOT more tolerant than the past 10-15 years have been (in part, no doubt, to a lack of ability to immediately spew one's thoughts anonymously to basically the entire world, without taking a moment to reflect or consider the ramifications of the spewing). But if we're going by your definition, I'm pretty sure the '60s were the genesis of the kind of "cancel culture" you're talking about. It's not that I disagree with your general point; it's just that the '90s feel like a weirdly arbitrary touchpoint for this idea, since the '60s/'70s and the 2010s/2020s had MUCH more vocal and widespread "cancel culture"-type behavior baked into them.

I am hearing you correctly, Anna? Please clarify. My takeaways from your comments are #1 -calling out bad behavior somehow equals cancel culture. #2- People who expose bad behavior are bad. People who engage in bad behavior are victims. And, employers who don’t want that kind of behavior are cowards. #3- Someone lied about you (and Cenk), but instead of calling out that bad behavior, just do away with the tool. (If you did call it out, your comments would fall into hypocrisy.) The internet comes with a dark side, however, bringing attention to bad behavior has literally been a life-saver for people of color. It’s off-putting to hear how much it bothers you. * It’s also off-putting that you are making a habit of turning every story into an opportunity to remind us you’re still salty for being called out.
