I remember watching her perform this live over 20 years ago and I remember people were crying. That's the level of truth and feeling that Jennifer Holiday infuses into this song. She is a showstopper and when she sings this.. it just stops everything in your life and makes you cheer for Effie and it's hard to describe but when you experience Jennifer Holiday sing this song live, there is no doubt as to who created this role. She literally brings people to tears because there's just a place Jennifer Holiday takes this song that no one else can take it. It's not just the notes, it's all these things that may look or sound weird on video but when you're watching her on stage live, you look around and so many grown men are crying and that's to say nothing of the women who just let it go because there's an Effie White in every woman and Jennifer brings it out. She demands respect when she sings this song, but you find yourself sympathizing with her. She's very unique and I feel she's very under- rated because no one sings like this lady. Jennifer Holiday created this role and this song was not written to be a "pretty" song. It takes a woman to sing it and the woman must lay bare her soul.
