Babbbyyyy!!!! Ms. Holiday took me to church this morning!!! God given Talent!!! I'm going to take an Advil been screaming this song with AUNTY JEN😂😂my head hurt! Haven't heard this since childhood. ❤❤❤
When Angela Bofill sang this song in concert back in ‘84, Jennifer was one of many people that greeted her backstage to tell just how much the song meant to their lives! She really did this song so much justice!
She bottoms out those low notes like nobody's business as well. You know it's not just the vocals that make a great artist singing a great song, but also the mouth and how it's formed to make and create certain sounds.
Remember this was released when she had lost all the weight. I was so happy to see her overcome that struggle. And relieved that her amazing voice didn't change. Such an underrated phenom.
I loved Miss Jennifer Holliday ever since I saw her when she was on Broadway and I still love her today she is a phenomenal singer, Powerhouse one of the greatest vocals of our life in time today
@@isaacortiz4617 That happened when she was with the Geffen records label, but Davis Clive opened the doors of the Arista records label for her and since then, she gained strength and today she is still active in her artistic career.
May 2024 and i cannot help going back to this superb song by Jennifer Hollyday. Chills and tears every time. And what a huge émotion knowing what she went through. She kept gaining weight because with 10 shows a week, food was er only friend. And she got fired. She was expelled from record companies...attempted suicide....
Yep! My mother told me this years ago. She was literally singing live in front of different cameras and the guy standing in the wings of the stage was her husband. Not sure if they are still together tho?
I can understand why. It would be rather ridiculous to lip sync to that kind of song. Extreme level and technique we get here. No wonder she had been closeted - strong competitor to the ones out there!
SING IT, SISTER!!!!! Damn, damn DAMN!!!! I miss this...people with REAL talent. Not just some talent-less hack, with a cute face, and a half-dressed Barbie doll body to distract the masses of their fans from noticing that they really can't sing.
Artists like her, show have gone a lot further in their careers! What a lot of people fail to realize is that " And I'm telling you" isn't all that she did in her career. I wish they still made music this good!
@Stormy D. That's a total LIE! Watch her biography. She didn't limit herself to the LGBTQ Community. She lost her record deal, and it was the LGBTQ Community who kept booking her and making sure she was paid for the Appearances. It's hard for a Singer, with no record deal or Management to book and promote themselves. This was also during a time when there was no Social Media. Things have improved for her greatly, and her interviews, She always talks about how she loves and appreciates the LGBTQ Community for loving and supporting her when nobody else did. All it takes is a simple internet search, to find one of her many interviews. Get your FACTS straight! 😉
@Isaac Ortiz She won a Grammy for her Cover of "Say You Love Me." That's one of her signature songs, and most people don't even realize she wasn't the original singer.
Homage to the beautiful Angela Bofill...only Jennifer could do it justice...made me cry listening to her sing this....still is one of my favorite songs...much love...
She's in a different class of singers. Body and soul with a set of golden pipes. That's what SINGING is all about folks. I'm a singer and i look up to these role models to better my voice.
Sadat Perry You do realize that Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder were around 20 years before Jennifer, right? Have you heard Aretha riff?????????????????? The truth is that Jennifer doesn't even riff that much. Melismatic twists are not her calling card. Her riffing is not extravagant at all.
Deluded is the word. Go and listen to the RU-vid clip of Aretha singing at Mahalias Funeral and then find me a voice with that amount of fire, passion, perfect-pitch and resonance, trust me, you'll fail. Arethas voice during this period could literally knock people over, with nurses on hand to assist.. Most of Arethas material, studio or live, from 1967 to 1975, has never been equaled, nor will it ever be, which is why all other singers, as great as some like Jennifer may be, trail in Arethas wake and eat the crumbs that have fallen from the Queens table.. Ha ha..
It isn't 'opinion', it is fact, the power in Arethas delivery in her prime has never been equaled, not in volume, but in resonance and clarity, this clarity made her voice ring out like no other voice in the history of recorded sound.. Much of the time Jennifer sounds awful, going off key and way over the top. Aretha had perfect pitch, which is why her voice resonated perfectly in the studio during her prime.., and unlike all other singers, Aretha never hit a duff note no matter what state her voice was in. With respect, but if you really think Jennifer holiday 'slaughters' Aretha Franklin vocally then I suspect that you are ignorant and haven't actually listened to Aretha Franklins back-catalog of legendary vocals, either that or your ears are not fully functional.
@@kaelishername3839 : Are you a professional singer? People sing how they feel it. Stop criticizing people when you know you'll match them. She's very soulful so go sit your no talent having ass down somewhere.
Savage...what an entertainer. Her and Patti. They not on slay it's the way they do it. So full of expression power sincerity vulnerability technique passion and a sound so easy on the ears while your eyes are locked on this beast singing but with so much feminine beauty a n.v d character. This song is so beautiful. I was thoroughly entertained watching this. Im clapping at the end.
Who's listening 🎧 in twenty twenty? This Guy 👈👈👈👈. The original Jennifer, nothing can or ever will sound like this sister, absolutely amazing. If you ever saw her in concert, you were truly bless. God bless you sista!
I literally had to stop painting because I felt all the tears came down from my eyes while listening to her.... How she sings it with a very rich emotions tho
Rachelle Ferrell is the most extraordinary professional voice I've never heard. Multi-Talented and highly-skilled with superhuman singing capabilities. I remember listening to her aptly titled album First Instrument. And it wasn't until the fourth or fifth time that I listen to it (with some good headphones) that I realized, in many cases, what I thought was a horn ...was her voice. What I thought was a keyboard.... was her voice. The woman is a singing God, A Singing Machine, some kind of vocal phenom. But to call her a diva, is a downgrade. Ok. Maybe I'm a little biased. LOL no love lost. But listen for yourselves. I recommend "inchworm" & "bye bye blackbird". Two pieces that are more Jazz than sold but so that classic soul and R&B like this particular performance, check out "I can explain -live" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w2uD_MUu55U.html
Tellias Saucier Jr You ain’t neva lied.. If you can’t sing like this you Can’t SANG PERIOD! .. Upcomings are possibly, Jazzmine Sullivan, Fantasia, and new Teena Marie, Jo-Jo.. that can lower case “s” sang.
Lord have mercy this song brought me to tears.... when I was young i didnt understand the lyrics.. But now????? whew ... friendships are so valuable when u been heartbroken😭😭
This is why Jennifer will always be the real deal! He voice can build from a gentle whisper all the way up to a musical thunderstorm of epic proportions. There are few singers that can fill me with such emotion that I feel like my whole body is vibrating. Thank God she is still around and still performing and recording.
I don't even know how to explain what her voice is doing to me... I wanna cry but not sad cry it's uprooting something in me... I don't know what to say
I watched the badly-filmed, out of focus live version of I Am Telling You here on RU-vid. I'm a old tough guy, but that brought a few tears down the cheeks.
Jennifer was discovered by the late Vinnette Carroll from NYC ("When hell freezes over i'll skate", "Your arms to short to box with GOD") in a church in Texas. I also did 2 shows for Vinnette.
Now all due respect to Whitney..... but you have to realize how great just having other greats makes you .... like this gem...Jennifer Holliday. Rachelle Ferrel. Anita Baker. Patti Labelle.... when you got voices like that in your mix you have to be able to bring it. It's why we don't really have to have great singers now. They all are too busy chasing fame instead of honing their crafts/gifts like the queens like Holliday..... they respect their boxes as the wonderful instrument it is/was
What a powerhouse voice. Watching her singing performance is an experience I wouldn’t want to miss out on, yet this is the first time I’m seeing her perform. I have heard her name and I believe hear a song or two of hers but really never seen any of her performances. What a total treat this performance was. My Goodness! I’ve seen some of the greats perform but JH is my favorite thus far. She sings convincingly and amazingly. Her performance mesmerizes me. I’m now definitely going to watch and enjoy her other performances.
I never saw a music video sang live by the artist, I guess only her who sang live in her own music video. Wow.... Nothing's compare to this magnificent lady. Her vocal is a beast.
Omg I need this in vinyl.. and a glass of wine ! I get it now why my parents played their tunes and was always dancing in livingroom .. so much love ❤️ 😢this moves the soul .. she is amazing
I truly appreciate you and your voice of JOY 💞💞 JENNIFER HOLIDAY YOU HAVE BROUGHT ME BACK FROM A SUICIDAL MIND AND I'M SO BLESSED AND GRATEFUL FOR YOU IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU..🙏🏿👋🏾❤️👋🏾🙏🏿
How would it feel to see a song featuring Jennifer Holiday, Karyn White and Anita Baker…and let’s not forget the Queen Paty Labelle. And if it was produced by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Babyface…it would be a hit👌🔥🔥🔥
I cant! I'm in tears right now! This is so touching. We really need singers like this to come back. They've completely take the emotion out of the songs now a days.
I needed this today! It took me back to 1991 when I began discovering who I really was without family support. Jennife,r you got me through that moment. Thank you!
Ms. Jennifer!!! Ms. Icon, ms. Showman you are the best, just seen you singing a congressman john funeral, the world loves you, sooooooo much, i get goose bumps bad everytime i hear you sing, and tears, good blessings always forever alice walker
we all know about her "chops" and power...but she's also a genius when it comes to "phrasing". Phrasing is a gift..its not something that you can really teach. And all the greatest divas and divos, know what that is all about. And its all about how a lyric is delivered, and the committment behind the phrasing...Jennifer, had you in the palm of her hand by saying one line..."in the game of love". She took her time and stretched it out a little bit, so you knew EXACTLY where she was coming from. One of the better vocalists, this country has ever produced.
Ooh, ooh, ooh Oh, oh In the game of love Sometimes we get left behind When pushin’ comes to shove And happiness is so hard to find A fall from love can break your spirit Paint a rosy outlook blue Darlin’, you don’t have to fear it ‘Cause, baby, I’m here for you I’m on your side when times are hard And you need some understanding I’m on your side when times gets tough And no one else can care enough I’m on your side to be for you You can, you’re free But sometimes you’re the last to know You can come to me, yes, you can When some heartache really lays you low If your lover leaves you cryin’ You don’t have t be alone Call my number, keep on tryin’ ‘Cause, baby, you know, I’ll be home I’m on your side when times are hard And you need some understanding I’m on your side when times gets tough And no one else can care enough I’m on your side to be for you Mmm, havin’ a friend when you come to the end Makes it easier (Makes it easier) Come back to me I can save you when she tries to tear you apart (Tear you apart) I won’t break your heart, no I’m on your side, baby, when times are hard And you need some understanding I’m on your side, baby-baby, when times gets tough And it seems that no one else can care enough I’m on your side, baby, whenever you need me You can always count on me, yeah I’m on your side, yes, I am, you see I’m on, hey, on your side, hey, hey, hey, yes I’ll be your friend to the very end I’m on your side, I’m on your side, baby, yes, I am, ooh Just like a bridge on troubled water I’m on your side, I’m your side, yeah I’m on your side I’m on your side, yes, I am
