The section on decolonization seems to be a bit misguided by making it seem that decolonization is opposed to Marxism. Quite the opposite. Walter Rodney’s book on decolonial Marxism is a classic example of how it’s more than just subverting western epistemologies but socioeconomic systems as well. Yes we study Nelson Maldonado Torres but we also read thinkers like Paulo Freire and Boaventura Santos who ideas are specifically focused on subverting sociopolitical structures. Furthermore, from what I understand Marxism was based purely on Capitalism in the west therefore it stands to reason that indigenous cultures that predated capitalism must have had some socialist socioeconomic system. This is what many thinkers like David Graeber and Nurit Bird David have argued

And to think I used believe Achille Mbembe was the smartest man in South Africa. They bourgeoise class love him and pedastalize him as a progressive think but it’s become apparent that all this post colony theory is a distraction for true social change. I’ve never read Edward Said but I keep on hearing good things about him … is he also part of this scholarly tradition?

Countries like Romania and Bulgaria are US protectorates for its geopolitical interests as a frontline against Russia, ravaged by neoliberal gangsterism that would not be possible without US's control. The compradorial elite inside is totally obedient and lacking any legitimacy among the majority - working poor. So, inner colonization is appropriate, but the usefulness of an analysis of the African American experience in the US escapes me. This is a very different context of socialist modernization that was forcefully dismantled through a process of "thirdworldization".

They speak about the "inner colony" in this video?

@@Ocinneade345 Yes, there was a question, but I don't think JPL understood the question, at least not based on what she recommended as a reading source. Perhaps, inner colonialism in the sense of EC colonizing "second tier" members combined with US's imperial interest in the Balkans, with a very tiny layer of gangestrer elite and managerial class benefiting within the colonized region.

This doesn't make sense, unless you understand "inner colonialism" to mean something different from "internal colonialism", which the question and JPL's answer were about. Romania and Bulgaria are external to the US and so can't be its internal colonies, by definition. They may be colonies, semi-colonies, or neocolonies of the US, but they can't be internal colonies. As for the usefulness of an analysis of the experiences of the Black population in the USA, JPL recommended that article because it lays out some relatively well defined empirical conditions that should be met in order for a population to be considered an internal colony (in the author's opinion). Since JPL could not directly answer the question due to a lack of specific knowledge about Eastern Europe, she was suggesting a tool the questioner could use to come up with that answer for herself.

@@Dorian_sapiens yes, agreed, that's why I was confused when the question was asked, I am not familiar with the term, I guess it will make mores sense for the context of settler colonialism, like the experience of indigenous people in the Americas, or the Palestinians, etc. It does not seem to apply to the context of the Balkans. But this concept also seems to be something similar to Gramsci's analysis of uneven development in Italy - the North exploiting the South and what can be called colonization of the mind with the explanation of economic backwardness with "cultural traits". Anticommunism as a mechanism of US hegemony (or at least attempts at such) is an aspect of the colonization of the mind. The model is: the reason for economic (and all other disastrous consequences resulting from it) is not the political-economy of global capitalism, not a pariah status in the EU, as a US protectorate or banana republic if you will, in a global capitalist system, but the past, the socialist state, which of course is "totalitarian". We see how armies of NGOs and think tanks serve to provide such explanations, but also when soft power is exhausted, foment revolutions under directives from the repressive apparatuses - CIA, MI6, etc.
