@@jarrodottinger3 it really sounds like a V30 type of speakers- maybe with better lows and highs? I am considering the Tornado 80, which is an Electric Lighting with a neo magnet so it weighs half as much as the Electric Lightning, but same tone.
I picked up a blackbird after watching this... slapped it in a single speaker extension cab for my peavey bravo. It might have been the single best sounding upgrade for the money that I've ever bought.
JCH 12/70 (from behringer 412S cabs) are the same exact speaker. I just asked Jensen and they told me it was rebranded as MOD for US markets after the behringer contract was finished
Thanks for a great video. I've been used to Greenbacks for a few years but after watching your video I purchased the MOD (35watt version). What a great speaker! For the money (£63 delivered) it's an absolute bargain and on par (but not quite the same) as a Greenback. Cheers!! 🤘
These are some really good speakers. I never knew why I never heard of em before. I was all about eminence... But I think I have to reevaluate my life now
MOD 12(70) & BlackBird 100 are very very interesting and good sounding speakers. The Stealth one sounds nice at the "first sight" but the highs are too "hard", imagine listening something like this with a proper volume (even with some monitors that use neodymium), this is the typical neodymium sound, that can bring tinnitus for everyone and that feeling of a internal ear bleeding.
I've watched these for so many different styles and genres, and it's amazing how Blackbird always sounds stellar, no matter what you're playing through it. It costs twice as much as any other speaker, but it does seem like it has no weaknesses at all, so it might save you money in the long run. It'd be really interesting to mix a dark speaker like a Jet Tornado with a very clear sounding speaker like a P12N to get a finished tone. Or you could just use a Blackbird and already have the perfect mix. Heh.
I didn't like the tornado mixed with a blackbird. In fact I tried all sorts of combinations in a 2x12 with a Blackbird, and in the end, I bought a second blackbird. It was the only thing I felt sounded really good/right with the it. I have a couple single 8 ohm blackbirds, and one 2x12 cab with a pair of 16 ohms in parallel. Overall my favorite speaker, and I've tried a LOT of speakers. They also make a 40W blackbird 12" and it's similarly voiced except not as fat/not as much low end, and costs $195 vs $318 (current prices. I didn't pay that for any of mine.)
@@SuperReverbious How is the blackbird at low volume? I'm looking for a replacement of my V30 to practice at home. V30 sound is fine for me, but it needs a volume >90/95dB.
At first I really liked the Jensen MOD 12-70, but when you compare it with the others is when you notice a sort of fizzy, staticky harshness it has (at least with that much gain for Modern Metal) that the other speakers seem darker and tend do smooth that harshness out. Still sounds dynamic and probably sounds a lot better with less gain. Or a tubescreamer would probably tighten up the harshness and lower the treble and mids on the amp as well. I’ve been thinking about swapping out the crappy stock 8” speaker in my combo amp at home with a Jensen MOD 10-50 10” speaker because I’ve heard it makes a huge difference for others who have done similar instead of giving up on the amp. I assume the Jensen Mod 12-70 sounds similar to the 10-50 which is why I was curious about this video. Thank you for posting!
The P12N sounds the best to my ears. I own a pair of two P12Q speakers and I'm really happy with them. The only difference with the P12Ns and the P12Qs is the sensivity and the output wattage, I think? There are no speakers that can beat alnico ones. I tried many brands and models. The only Celestion speaker that worth the price is the G12-65. The Vintage 30 is the worst Made in China crap I've ever tried!
Hi Paul. Take care about the "Nominal Voice Coil Diameter" and the "Magnet Weight" for P12N/P12Q. The Greenback G12M and the Celestion blue worst a try if you like theses. You can dig also into old Jensen speaker (with paper voice coil vs Kapton today), Altec 417, JBL D120F and give a try to an Eminence (the Legend for example).
👍🇺🇸❤I HATE V30's💩......my 2 fave celestions (G12T-75 & Heritage 30's are decent).........I also love the JBL D120F.......but I do truly love P12Q & P12N........outta the N & Q......if u were only allowed one choice......which would you choose ?????
I suppose the electric lightning and the nighthawk has not been recorded with the same mike / mike position, as the electric lightning should be way darker than the nighthawk
I'm more prone to think some error has been done by Khole, as the Nighthawk has a smaller voice coil, so it should be brighter. The sound samples on Jensen site are coherent with you as well
I wonder how the Raptor sounds. I was thinking about mixing the Electric Lightning and the Torpedo with a CR120H but I'm curious if I should just use the Electric Lightning.
I think they have made first the re-issue, then the modern serie. Try to match existing speakers on the Jensen website regarding the magnet size, basket looks, and any code stamped on it.
I bought a Jensen C12 Nighthawk after listening to sound demos on RU-vid. I have original 1970's Rola/Cestion Greenbacks. I have always wanted a similar, if not the same sounding, replacement speaker. This is the closest I have got. The Nighthawk doesn't mask or exaggerate any tones. It picks up on all picking and tonal nuances while still having some growl and bite to it. The modern day Celestion Greenbacks sound like a cheap fuzzy, treble-rich speaker. Jensen claimed that over time, the glue that binds with the cone deteriorates, giving it that particular tone. Well, I don't have 50 years time to wait for new Greenbacks to deteriorate. Get a Nighthawk now. It's the closest I found!
Hi Jamie. Nice to know that the nightawk is close to a good vintage greenback. They are not exactly the same technically : The Greenback voice coil is made with Kraft paper whereas the Nighthawk former is made with Fiberglass. this is why oou can reach a good 75 watts with it. The magnet is the equivalent to a G12H (51 oz). Chineese GB are also a bit different than the UK production, more tight and powerfull, less subtil. And the strenght of the magnet go away after time. Cheers.
If I remember right (and maybe not) the Tornado has the same 1.75" voice coil as the Nighthawk. I'm really digging the punch on these speaker but you can't find them everywhere. My questions are 'What cab were they in or was it I.R.?' and 'Would they be this punchy or would they be boomy in a G-Flex 2X12?'. I suppose another question would be, 'How did you get that punchy sound?'
My dream speaker would have low-end punch like these, straight line mids angled up to the highs and then a soft high-end that rolls off like a Creamback.
I know im commenting on a pretty old video here but, do we know which Blackbird and Tornado are in this example? (wattage and ohm rating) Ohm load of all of the speakers really. Does make a difference. 16 Ohm speakers tend to be a bit brighter
@@olivierdegeoffroy If you're referring to the sticker on the back of the speaker in each example then you must have some superior vision because i cant read those for shit. Also not everyone goes out of their way to pay attention to such detail when making a video like this so even if i could read them i'd still have wanted to verify. Either way, Thank you for answering my question.
So weird how the universe works. I've heard so many good things about many of these speakers, but never heard a peep about the MOD. As it turns out, the MOD really got my attention. I might pick one up throw it into the mix and see how it goes. Crazy cheap too. Won't kill the bank it it turns out to blow in my application.
I've got a little homemade tube amp that my buddy's dad made with two MODs in them Love that fucking thing He put a drive circuit in the amp, so I don't even use any pedals when I'm jamming on that amp, I just plug straight in and jam Sounds amazing
If you haven't yet. Or need more. Buy a behringer BG412S cab (they go for about $125) they come with 4 mod 12/70s.. they are labeled as JHC 12/70 when they were exclusive to behringer and later rebranded as MOD
I replaced Park labeled 10" in my old Marshall G30R CD with a MOD 10 50 and I've got to say this thing cranks much better now with a true 4ohm speaker on it's transistor distortion. Clean sounds nice as well...still breaking it in I suspect it to only get better.
the electric lightning is best for gain and metal, the black bird is best for stoner doom sounds and the p12n best for clean and classic rock. (I have the p12n).
I have a pair of Jenson J2 speakers I bought in the mid 90's. I can't seem to find any information on them. Is one of these in this video an equivalent?
I'd love a Blackbird but I'm curious about the difference between 8-ohm and 16-ohm. In other speaker like Celestion vintage 30, i hear a difference between impedances. Does Jensen provides the same difference?
There's a video out there where one of the guys from jensen talks about their modern line a lot, he says that 16 ohm speakers just inherently have better dynamics. He didn't get too deep into the science of why, but says it's always going to be true regardless of manufacturer.
This is the exact combo I settled on in my 2x12 and its the perfect pairing. Took me a few speaker switches to get to this, but its not going to change! HIghly recommended combo.
In my 20 years of tone experience,I like the electric lighting for my tweed deluxe for modern to classic rock, the blackbird I think suits better with high gain amps, tornado is same as electric lighting but mid scoop, the C12K and Falkon are almost same but falkon bit of less mids and warmer.
Olivier de Geoffroy ,greetings Olivier i have tested a couple,But the one that shines for almost all types of music style with great focus mids, loose bass but controled, very warm, and when overdriven or boosted sounds more natural is The alnico P12Q
