Jeremy Dutcher--singer, composer, musicologist, performer and activist--delivered a profound celebration of his heritage and music at Vancouver Folk Festival 2024. His music blends classical influences with Indigenous melodies, creating a unique soundscape that resonates deeply with listeners from all backgrounds.
He shared the vibrant culture and songs of his ancestors with the crowd, so they could be celebrated and experienced again. As an Indigenous Wolastoqiyik member of the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Canada, he taught words and phrases in Wolastoqey to the audience in order to keep his people’s native language alive.
Dutcher's second and latest album, “Motewolonuwok" is the first to include lyrics in both English and Wolastoqey. The songs on this album to foster healing, recovery, and the survival of his people's language, while also inviting non-Indigenous listeners to engage with and understand the stories of his community. “Motewolonuwok” includes powerful songs like "Pomawsuwinuwok Wonakiyawolotuwok" ("People Are Rising"), which reflects the resilience of Indigenous communities. Other songs, like "The Land That Held Them," draw inspiration from protest music, addressing social injustices faced by Indigenous peoples today.
Following his performance, Jeremy Dutcher sat down with Darek Mazzone of SAMA to talk more about his first two albums, as well as the balance between sorrow and joy in his work. Dutcher sings celebration songs to his ancestors, while paying homage to to the painful history that underlies their stories; a duality that characterizes his work.

Welcome to the official RU-vid Channel of SAMA: Music & Art - An immersive Series of Music & Art Performances focused on the Healing Power of Global Sacred Music 🎼
Mission:
SAMA cultivates a hub for global roots music in the Pacific Northwest, fostering empathy across cultures through transformative music and arts experiences.
Vision:
A polyphonic world, a world where many worlds fit.
About Us:
SAMA emerged as a response to the fragmentation and polarization in today’s societies. In a world beset by wars, authoritarianism, ecological degradation, and climate change-induced displacements, our need for relationship skills has never been greater. Despite being globally connected, we often fail to truly listen to each other. Music has the power to bridge these divides, engaging the right hemisphere of the brain, which governs experience, emotion, and relationships. At SAMA, we celebrate music's inherent ability to connect us to our shared humanity and ancestral roots.
We focus on live performances to tap into the communal and social aspects of music, creating relationships among musicians, audiences, and the music itself. By experiencing music together, people from diverse cultural backgrounds can develop a greater awareness and appreciation of different ways of being within our shared humanity. SAMA envisions a world where this awareness, rooted in empathetic social experiences, nurtures a polyphonic world - a world where many worlds fit.
