Jeremy Heimans: What new power looks like

We can see the power of distributed, crowd-sourced business models every day - witness Uber, Kickstarter, Airbnb. But veteran online activist Jeremy Heimans asks: When does that kind of "new power" start to work in politics? His surprising answer: Sooner than you think. It’s a bold argument about the future of politics and power; watch and see if you agree.

This gives me a new insight about power but I think what Heimans said is not all executable (at least for an ordinary person, like me). I look forward to hearing more from Heimans about this old power vs new power and how to combine it effectively for the sake of our citizens.

Government tends to be slow moving and freezes things in time. I mean think about how outdated the current model of education and college is. However, much of the "old power" is still hidden from view, the only way they'll ever likely see it. Is when it starts to break down.

No one is talking about occupy wallstreet today. There is no sustained power in it. People just showed up just to say the showed up in the way people take a photo in from of the Mona Lisa to say they were there. If people are serious about activism in a political way. Maybe do their homework, know the system to change the system, then get involved in actual power structures. His definition: New power is the mass participation and peer coordination to create change and shift outcomes is not new power. It is politics in America. It's picking a side, choosing a political party(mass participation), and working toward something tangible(peer coordination). I think in American politics America's are failing to realize that the system is not broken. The system works. It is set up to force people to have to come together whether they like each other or not. It is set up so you cannot ignore or avoid one another. It is set up to be messy. It is set up to not work. It is meant to force conversations. All this without a civil war breaking out.

At first, I thought he would be talking about that "powerful" Indian guy, but suddenly it is about miscalls and power in technology. I'm not a great speaker, but I think we have to consider unity, coherence and emphasis. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

These revelations are really interesting, and I think new vs. old power is a great framework for classifying new ideas of democracy and power in discussions of the Internet society. I think, using this structure, that new power _must_ be the dominant power on the Internet, not the other way around as it is today. Facebook and Google must be overshadowed by networks like Wikipedia and Bitcoin. I think all we need for this in a set of social networks which are built on the values of new power, using decentralized frameworks and giving full control (and power) to the user of these services, thus distributing power on the Internet to its "citizens."

Anyone taking this talk seriously should watch "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace" by Adam Curtis, especially the second episode. These ideas are not "new", they are old, they stem from ill-conceived notions of ecology (ecossystems) and when transferred to social and technological politics, dubbed as "cybernetics". These ideas always failed to create the new promised utopia. Mostly, they failed miserably through the last decades to come up with anything significant at all but the mere capability to spawn emergent phenomena like all these protests in the last decade (Occupy HK the latest).

sofias. orange Except for ultra-portability, tablet computers are garbage. Laptops are far more useful for mobile computing, especially for writers and programmers, and desktops and servers offer more power for productivity. Tablet computers were available in the 80s and 90s (remember Palm computers?), but they always had the same problem: poor interface, poor performance. Even today, tablets still have those issues, but some people need an ultra-portable to be productive, and a lot of people *think* they need an ultra-portable because of them. To the point: this being the "time" of something does not mean that it's any better or even necessarily good.

Decentralized societies are not affected by corrupt individuals. The decision on the part of corrupt individuals to do corrupt things would harm their status and well-being in a decentralized society. Corruption is only rewarded in centralized societies.

Poor deluded fool. "Old power" was once upon a time "new power". New power, if it ever has any real power, will soon become corrupted and morph into something akin to "old power".
@thePricoolas
@thePricoolas 9 лет назад
You misunderstood the conception. New power is about being open, transparent and with participation of all people. First thing it eliminates is corruption and gives fresh tools and potential to eliminate problems that are benefit only for minority of people.

***** I respect your knowledge in history, which I found really interesting. Although, there is a lot of ways, how this so natural and inevitable anarchy (in various forms) could just dismantle itself by evolving to the point, where we would not come back to it. A single person might not have any weapons or authority to command, but it's all about politics. And these days just by using knowledge, rights and nothing else, every single person can gain power to change things. Sorry, for entering so annoyingly optimistic mode, but again it's like evolution - if you are pessimistic you stand and do nothing, when you are optimistic, stuff will just happen eventually.
@neddyladdy
@neddyladdy 9 лет назад
Theo Starodubov No need to be sorry Theo. We all need to be optimistic to some extent otherwise opportunities will not be grabbed. But I get worried for people when they go into things all bright eyed and optimistic with eyes wide shut. cheers
