His paintings are wonderful and beautiful, but his etchings art mind blowingly fantastic. If he only did his graphic work he'd still be THE master

+Tina Rider Very good artist, he has tips on applying just thre right pressure in his pencil sketchs and drawing shadows and yet leaving enough fluid motion to allow the viewer to see what they will.

I don't really understand Paxman. Even for today's standards, Rembrandts use of light in 'The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis' is extraordinary. Absolutely wonderful painting.

visse264 Totally agree with you. The light of that painting just shone out and that was just from seeing it on the video. I wasn't lucky enough to get to see it in person but can imagine how amazing it must have been to actual see it in person.

I visited this exhibition 2x in Amsterdam....believe me, whatever the quality of this film, NOTHING will prepare you for seeing the originals. And that was not his last self-portrait.....

'The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis' is one of my favourite paintings ever, though it's only about a quarter the size of the original (I think Rembrandt cut it up & reused the rest of the canvas because of his lack of money?)

Yes, I do believe he was correct about him dying at that year of 1669, the same year of that portrait being done, and that his paintings being about us and our own humanity. The only problem I see was his discussion was about his production and that portrait being his last. I myself have seen a few portrait of him since he painted that one. It totally dumbfounds me how everything that is said and discussed about Rembrandt's work of art and taken seriously, is by the Dutch art expertise itself. Aren't these the same people that had his bones dug up shortly after his burial for non payment of the ground he was buried in? He was in fact buried in a prepaid plot, but it was said he re-sold it to someone else and hence was dug up for non payment. It was said that his bones were then thrown and burnt up in the rubbish pile. They have no records or grave marker of where he was even buried.

Are you mad? No these are not the same Dutch people. Rembrandt and his contemparies lived almost 4 centuries ago!!!! Times change. As do people. Not only in Amsterdam but everywhere else in the world. Do you still blame Germans for WW2? Do you still blame British and Dutch immigrants for masssacaring native Indians in the USA? Do you still blame Italians for killing hundreds of thousands of people in the name of the Roman empire? And you also have a rich imagination. Rembrandt was buried inside the Westerkerk (West Church). That in itself is a huge honour. Not just anyone would have been buried there. Even though he was bankrupt anbd he didn't have any money when he died. And he is still buried there under a stone with no name. Things really haven't changed that much in the world. Do you think that when you die and have no money left an many debts that you will get buried in a church? Also at that time nobody knew (not even he) that he would become one of the great legends of art painting in the eyes of later generations. It is easy now lookig back at those times and point your finger and judge people. But you fail to see thhat you are looking back from a complety different time with completey different views on what is right or wrong. Only 50 years ago in the USA if you were black you had to sit in the back of the bus. Do you blame every American kid born after that time for his or her racist ancestors?

Rembrandt didn't loose an eye. The man in the painting is Julius Civilus, the one rising up against the Romans ( Batavii chief who served Rome earlier )

I doubt there was a big reunion in heaven due to his earthly deeds,... and I believe he knew that. Didn't you all see that portrait he painted of himself standing in front of St. Peter?

some historian have already anounce that Rembrandt and benedict Spinoza never knew one another.but I tell you to day that I have a one of a kind very rare painting with Spinoza name sign and in Rembrandt style.iv had the painting in the family almost fifty years, I do believe that painting was sent to America for protection because of Spinoza exile.only a master could make such tiny images with a brush alone,images you can see best with a scope of some kind.back of canvas under side arrows surgest writings under side that I have not seen.i am seeking to sell this one of a kind painting of Rembrandt and spinoza
