Jeremy Paxman's not sure he's interested in family history, but he does love social history. However, he quickly realises that his family's story is inextricably linked to that of Britain, in particular to the working-class communities in Glasgow and Bradford. He traces the life of his maternal grandmother in the Salvation Army and the migration of his father's family from Suffolk to Yorkshire.

A lot of these celebs seem to sit in judgement on their ancestors for being poor. Like this one saying that his ancestor should have stopped breeding. But the fact is that it's only in the last 50 or so years that we've had efficient birth control. Before that, large families were the norm and 7 children wasn't considered to be that much. You had to think ahead, knowing that you were likely to lose some children to disease. And you had to plan for your old age in the times before the old age pension, and make sure that you had children who could support you when you couldn't work anymore. The fact is that there wasn't much work available in Suffolk at that time, so no matter how hard this Paxman tried, he wasn't going to make ends meet. So the whole family paid a huge price, leaving the little ones with who knows who so that they could go and work a 16 hour day in a dangerous and unhealthy factory. It was a different world, and quite disgusting of us to sit in judgement on those people who really knew what hardship is.

Precious human life. That we are alive is because our ancestors didn't give up, they survived however they could. In my tree one child of six survived the plague, her and her father. Yes, Jeremy, it is very very humbling.

It's always awesome to me when I see them standing in the place the ancestors were two hundred years previously. The only thing separating them is time.

"He should have stopped breeding..." 🙄🤨 Unfortunately, that's just the kind of comment I've come to expect from well off celebrities who are in reality clueless Bout the reality of history.

Although he did seem to calm it down a bit in the end and talked about feeling humbled that he's here because his ancestors had struggled though that hardship. But that comment did jar with me too.

I came from a long line of people who worked very hard to survive but never received government help and I can understand Jeremy's feelings..

He is rather arrogant... He didn't live at the time or under the circumstances of his ancestors but he is comfortable mocking the decisions that they had to make to survive.

Ah I found an ancestor who turned up in Oldham, where we all came from, from Lambeth. He must have been sent there. Mystery solved.
