"Jerk-Off" from Tool's "Opiate" EP (1992).
I'm a little bit anxious about the title of the song, but it should be fine I think. I honestly love this song and it's definitely my favourite song if I had to pick a song from both Opiate and Undertow. It's just such an aggressive song! Anyway, only 2 Opiate songs left, 7 Tool songs left in total!
It's all pretty easy until we reach the bridge with the big juicy chords. That 3rd chord is really difficult to grab in my opinion. Have fun!
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-A-D-G
Artist : Tool
Bassist : Paul D'Amour
EP : Opiate (1992)
Song : JERK-OFF
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash

ok so 0:49 how does this sound so clean? when i play it, it all sounds like the notes are just clashing with each otehr and sounds ugly. also, do u get fret buzz when ur playing? i seem to get a ton, and ive took my bass to a store to get it setup recently as well. does it have to do with plucking? do you pluck gently? many questions,, and many thanks : )

Oh yeah, I remember recording that part. was kind of like a "dodge the fret buzz" recording. I strum quite gently there indeed, but it also has to do with the setup of your bass. I think my action is quite high already, but definitely helped with the fret buzzing. And of course, fretting just above the fret will give you the least fret buzz.

@nalydbear2179yes it has. A mix of better technique and a new bass haha. I had a really cheap one and i realized it made a big difference

Leo. Any advice on the fast tremlo picking section. Its been a year and I just cant qiite get it down. One one bass it muddies out and on the Stingray its just not 100%

Are we talking about the tone or the actual technique to keep up the pace?
@captainchunk4078

@@LeoBassCovers2 LeoBassCovers the tone I finally am close with a Stingray! But no about 50 seconds in (1st time). The technique. There's probably a better term for it other than fast tremlo picking?
@LeoBassCovers2
@LeoBassCovers2 4 года назад
Nah I get what you mean with that as it is just fast tremolo picking. Maybe fast alternate picking is the correct term. But eh, Paul's tone was also not that great when he would do those fast riffs. He played with a lot of treble because his Rickenbacker already had that punchy tone, so it's hard to get the sound right. But too much treble is a problem when doing fast riffs so you gotta find a balance.

@@LeoBassCovers2 thanks man. Gotta love that Rick O sound ha ha. On the technique of playing that passage.... Do you think its just best to play it slow over and over and gradually just build up speed? Maybe I've just not been patient enough to do that
@LeoBassCovers2
@LeoBassCovers2 4 года назад
Just take it slow yeah. Always practice it a bit slower if you can't figure it out. Everything always makes sense when it's super slow :)
