​@@jmfsilenthill I think the problem was that they animated it without thinking about voice acting so the VA had to match the really odd movements of the princess. Not saying that she's good though, the weird whispery voice she's using should be proof enough for that.

@@BenersantheBread They usually let the voice director guide the voice actor and then animate to what the actor outputs. In Dragon's Lair, it feels like there was no voice director at all for the voice actress. She probably only had a script and was told to 'sound seductive'. Which would make problems when she had to make exertion sounds such as the gasps.

@@jmfsilenthill To be fair, they didn't have the budget to hire voice actors for the game, so they just had a couple of the animators provide the voices for Dirk and Daphne.

It’s really just a cartoon where they had to go “where do we put game into this?” I feel like making the actual animation, he didn’t think about where the game bits would go at all.

i really feel like the main reason it runs into difficulties is because turning an animated film like this into a gamespace is some really difficult shit to do. the blinking of the things you needed to pay attention to or to highlight choices was a smart solution to "how do players know what to do?" but this isn't something that easily reads as "video game." and then even when you do start to read it as one, everything is whipping around at fifty billion miles and glorified simon says makes it hard to connect your input to what your character is doing in this detailed and idiosyncratic animation

@@commandantcarpenterIt’s a trial and error memory game, essentially, pasted over a bunch of vaguely related (or sometimes not at all, like you have no clue where to go) scenes. At the end of the day it’s a money suck, it’s created to make as much money as possible. The praise for it came way later, I remember the hate and vitriol for it at the time. I remember playing it whenever I could in my local arcade. I spent so much money on it but I also really enjoyed many of the death scenes lol - I’m a big Bluth animation fan. I mean, also, never in my wildest dreams back in that arcade as a little girl (I’m in my late thirties now) would I have thought I’d be watching some guy in America playing it on my phone.

it usually cost more than other machines at the one i went to often, and you’d get i think either 4, or 8, and iirc there’s a way to gain extra lives, but not many. i think only one or two max
