Hi and thank you for all the appreciation, glad you like my playing! I didn´t study music in college, I have done a lot of studying on my own - fueled by a restless passion for all kinds of guitar playing and also other stringed instruments. Unfortuantely , I´m also a bit lazy :) (I´ve had long periods when I didn´t play at all.) I think passion is the key, I knew from when I was around eight (started with the guitar at ten) that I just HAD to play the guitar! Take care Martin
Martin, best cover of this great tune that I've heard yet! I wasn't surprised though - you're a fantastic musician. Keep 'em comin', and I'll keep listening.
i normally hate covers of any kind, but you sir, have absolutely put your own original spin on this great tune. im in the process of learning this song right now, hopefully to learn a few things to help with my own music. hats off to you, farewell and good luck.
Hey, I missed your question... The action at the nut is a tiny bit high I think but it may be lower than average. A Dunlop medium sits "semi-tight" at the 6th string. You´re right, more guitars needed! I just checked, for example, to play the songs from the cd on one occasion I would need 5 guitars to avoid excessive retuning.
I listened to Jerry Reed play this song with Chet Atkins a little bit ago, here on RU-vid, and then found your version. This is absolutely awesome picking. Thank you for posting it.
Hi and thanks! Yes, it can be a struggle to play this kind of picking stuff if the neck and action isn´t set up for it. I took my Maton to a guitar tech pro and told him how I wanted it - and he did a tremendous job! Of course, having the action low makes it difficult too get a "meaty" or "full" tone. One can always settle for a compromise, I guess. Anyway, he did work at both the nut and bridge saddle and also "evened out" the frets along the neck to get a dead-straight profile. Continued
BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG!!! holy shit...iv never seen such great clean playing...and the track behind it is awesome! haha, also your version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown, is amazing.
Hi, the acoustic sound, especially with the low action I have, is pretty thin when compared to my Loef guitar, for instance. But it works very well with a mic in front of it, no need to cut the bass with an EQ. And it´s top-notch plugged in. It´s a guitar I feel relaxed with. Martin
I don't think Chet or Jerry could play it any better. Incredibly smooth. Your left hand looks like it is gliding flawlessly across the frets without effort.
There I use basically the E major pentatonic, and then throw in some blue notes like g and d. A lot of the country/ bluegrass picking sound comes from combining the major and minor pentatonic scales. However, I don´t usually think in terms of scales. The licks/ runs I play are often composed, and it´s a bit of trial and error until I find something that to my ears sounds "right" (in a particular context).
Damn! Martin you never cease to amaze me, just when I think I'm beginning to get a handle on this pickin' lark, you come out with something even more intimidating.........
definitely the smoothest version ive ever heard, not only that but its a got a serious groove unlike some of the others who just try n play as fast as they can making it sound messy
Thanks, well I guess you found the tuning :) (It´s standard) I think there are many tabs of this on the web, although maybe not my extra "licks" - but I think those are on my site somewhere under the "Licks&Tricks" section... Cheers Martin
Thanks! Well, there are many models out there, I have only tries this one, a EBG808 Artist. It´s pretty quiet and maybe a bit thin... On the other hand that´s great for playing fingerpicking, especially faster stuff. My other guitars sound too "big" and ring too much, which makes some picking sound blurry. I don´t know, the best thing is if you can find one in a shop to try for yourself, of course. Good luck mate!
W H O U G H!! I thought I had heard them all, - all the astonishing versions of Jerry & Chet, but THIS is totally unbelievable: The new (and gorgeous!) melody AND the arrangement!! Pliiiiis tell who is playing the other instruments, - is it you? Ahh, I've been playing Chet & such myself for more than 50 years, but now I'm SO impressed!
Thank you very much for the very kind words! I´m playing the other stuff which is pretty much "guitar percussion", rhythm guitar, bass and lap steel. It´s such a great tune so it was fun coming up with a kind of personalised version :) Cheers/ Martin
@@tallstrom Your answer reveals beyond doubt that you definitely have a spolendid and rich musical gift from our heavenly Father! In the 70s I admired Jeff Beck and Alvin Lee because of their ultra-fast solos, but your technique is far above that: Watching you play, I'm impressed with the remarkable, even stunning ease with which you swirl through all those fast paced notes and chords.
