Videography/Video Editing by Stephen Sweeney (Splashwave Productions).
Mama Let Him Play, the single from the first Doucette album release of the same name, in the fall of 1977 earned platinum status (sales of 100,000 units) in Canada, plus substantial publicity and tour promotion. The single and record were not successful to the same degree in the United States, though the single charted in the Billboard Top 100 and the album in the Billboard 200. The recording band for the single and album was composed of Duris Maxwell on drums, Brent Shindell on guitar,] Don Cummings on bass and Robbie King on keyboards.

A Canadian Icon. Saw him lots in the 70's. Met him years later at a small blues bar in Victoria, very nice man. This song one of the best rock songs in the world. It is about his son , whose picture is on the album cover. He grew up to be the best looking bouncer/doorman in Vancouver,he worked at The Yale for a few years. It's gone now to make way for condos. Huge loss to Vancouver...I miss going there after a concert. Now I miss concerts....no more for at least a year they said.....

I'm a Yank, but I feel fortunate living about 40 miles south of the Canadian border below Vancouver. Otherwise I'd never have known about Jerry Doucette, David Wilcox or David Lindley. The Canadian stations came in way better than Seattle.

He didn't write it for his son. He wrote it, he said, in about an hour after his dad had told his mom to let him play after she had told Jerry to stop making noise.

Damn, missed him, he plays is so little in Ontario anymore. Remember his performance at Mac, when he just came back from LA. At the start sadly only about 50 people there, he asked should we play, we all said hell YEAH he did and rocked the roof, by concerts end there were over 1,000 people streaming in from all over the campus, the word was out The Deuce was Loose. 3 weeks later before 30,000 at the Ex, he opened for Triumph was given his Gold Record for "Mama" and at the end of his set fired off a magnificent 17 minute version of Mama, blew the place away, Triumph were asses, so no encore given. Was the first time Triumph was booed when they came out in front of their home boys, was not a pretty site, well actually it was.

I have a friend from Hamilton who is a badass guitar player named Terry Doucette. I saw Jerry perform this song in about 1982 at the Surfside Cabaret in Victoria BC. He had a double Marshall stack and it was the loudest sound pressure I had experienced in my life to that point.

I was born in Jan of 1977 and just a few short years on from there I started retaining my first memories of your songs as your albums were regular staples in our home for many years, right along side of other great local'ish bands, like, Downchild Blues Band, Doug and the Slugs, I have to take ownership for us here hehe, Penticton's own Mike Rynoski aka Mike Reno and Loverboy....oh there are so many!
