2004 National Heritage Fellow and Dobro master Jerry Douglas (Nashville, TN) reflects on an impactful, life-changing two-month tour across southeast Asia over four decades ago. Curated and produced by the NCTA, this tour forever impacted his work as a traditional musician and culture bearer. Jerry’s career has flourished over several decades, and he has received seemingly countless awards and accolades. He now gives back to the NCTA as a board member.
Cultivating unique cross-cultural connections and experiences for artists and audiences is a core attribute of the NCTA’s mission, often achieved through free, large-scale, multicultural festivals. The logic: create open and compelling spaces for artists to perform and share their traditions, and witness the inspiration and affirmation that occurs when cultural practice blooms.
We have been honored to shine a light on these possible pathways for Jerry and thousands of other tradition bearers for 90 years.
