I am so thankful to have been able to see/hear Jerry live for so many years back in the day. 1988 (when this interview was supposedly done) was such a fun year in GD land. Spring at Brendan Byrne, summer in Roch, SPAC, Pitt, Oxford, ME...some of the best times of my life on the road with family and friends. I am fortunate to still get that vibe traveling around the country today with Phish, same communal-like spirit. TOTALLY different music- apples and oranges- can't compare. BUT, the scene is very similar. So thankful that we still have it to dip in and out of when needed. I personally haven't done much Dead-offs after Jer died. I did further in '98 but that's about it. However, it's so great to see generations of families take in Dead & Co and get a glimpse of the musical magic in those songs. I need to hear Jerry right now. Time to pop on my all time favorite song of his: "Mission in the Rain!" Great interview!!
@marymoore2915
@marymoore2915 2 года назад
Joejams17 your post brought back a lot of amazing memories for me of all the GD shows I am so grateful to have experienced in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Pure magic. Those amazing vibes you talked about have never been recreated for me since Jerry left us. Now all the shows I got to be a part of don't seem like nearly enough. Like you, I saw Further a few times and Phil & friends a few times. Also D&Co a few times. Really good but never the same. Made me nostalgic. Even so, I also love to see younger people getting into it. That'll help the music to live on. I'm grateful to have recordings of some of the shows I was at and many I wish I was at. Amazing how this band has enriched my life. So fun to listen to Jerry in this interview!

@@STSGuitar16 I’ve a theory that people who have been big users over the years- it’s perhaps a way of slowing themselves down. A way of dealing with some form of undiagnosed ADHD or similar disorder. Judging by how he sounds here, the acid didn’t make much of a dent lol
@STSGuitar16
@STSGuitar16 2 года назад
@@UncannyAleman I feel ya, I just know acid def has a way of killing one's ego through if it's used in higher doses, and The Dead all definitely tapped into that sorta "acid mental state" more than the average Joe ever could imagine. There's no way his thoughts and responses here haven't been influenced in some part by LSD. It's a pretty powerful drug that definitely makes you look at and think about things differently. Jerry's interviews always illustrate that idea really well, imo. His personality and overall persona was/is totally one of a kind.
@AbeTheSigma007

@STSGuitar16
@STSGuitar16 2 года назад
@@AbeTheSigma007 I don't think "hooked" is the right word there; LSD isn't an addicting drug at all. I'd say the reason so many people were doing it then is largely because it was just everywhere in the entire Dead scene back then. You go to a Dead show and there was a decent likelihood that you might wind up being dosed. But yeah, it isn't an addictive substance itself.

He was clean for a few years in the 80s and 90s. He started up again off and on around the time Hornsby stopped playing with them. Was clean-ish again in 93, which shows in the solid performances they turned in that year. They never quite hit the peaks of stage energy they routinely hit in 89 and 90, but it was probably the last time they got close. By 94 and 95, Jerry was clearly on the decline again, though it was the decades of bad diet, diabetes, and smoking that really ended him.

Say what you want, but Jerry gives thoughtful full candid answers in every interview I ever saw. Compare and contrast with the sound byte interviews with politicians and sports figures.

It wasn't the music that drew the crowds. It was the fans abilities to interact with each other and the musicians. The music was the cherry on top !

I'm still waiting for Bobby to reach out to me since nobody knows how to write songs over there at the grateful dead corporation anymore. I've got at least four compositions that would sound great.
