Mama said: 'Don't go near that river' 'Don't be hanging around old Catfish John' 'Come the morning, I'd always be there' 'Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn'. Born a slave in the town of Vicksburg, traded for a chestnut mare Lord, he never spoke in anger though his load was hard to bear. Mama said: 'Don't go near that river' 'Don't be hanging around old Catfish John' 'Come the morning, I'd always be there' 'Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn'. Catfish John was a river hobo who lived and died by the river bed Thinking back, I still remember I was proud to be his friend. Let me dream in another morning, to a time so long ago When the sweet magnolia blossomed, cotton fields as white as snow. Knowing Jerry like I don't I think he probably would've wanted Donna to stay in the band after Keith died if she had been up for it, I think he loved what she contributed and made room for it as often as possible. Also I think the only time she ever subtracted anything was in 72 (a year a lot of people love for the jams etc, thus the anger. I'm not defending anyone here tho, either side of the hill) when she didn't have monitors, all the 73 stuff and later was great and there are examples (Winterland 74 Scarlet) where she actually leads the band just jamming on spacey vocal melodies, which Jerry echos or comps with his guitar. She's good shit. And That's All I Have to Say About That
Donna sang without monitors and got kind of drowned out in her Dead performances. She couldn't hear herself sing, which is why she can be hit or miss with the Dead. Not her fault.
Funny loving comment. But no one smokes a cigarette like John Kahn unless they are on heroin. Trust me on this one. I know. PERFECT CIG. Believe me I know.
My mom was in their circle of friends until around 1980 when she moved back to the Midwest to start a family. She’s stayed in contact and we’d see them when they came to Indiana. According to her from 1975 on he was loaded every time he got on stage. In the late 70s he switched over to cocaine for a bit then was doing both by the end of the 70s. The entire band except for Weir had issues with either alcohol cocaine or heroin. Bill Jerry Keith & Brent after him were all addicted to heroin.
Keith’s doesn’t a great job on some of the more New Orleans style piano stuff like Catfish John. Wish he soloed more in the dead. Love Jerry’s playing but I never understood why he’d want to monopolize the solos and jams the way he did. Part of the fun of being in a band is getting to hear what other musicians have to say musically
When I was in active addiction I would sit at home play guitar do a line play guitar do a line like all night it was just this vicious cycle that never ended and man I can see it here. It’s great at the time but later..🤷♂️
