Im in my mid 20s and I was turned on to the Grateful Dead world a few years back. It literally changed my life I love being in a DeadHead community and would like to learn more. Thanks for keeping the grateful dead music alive for newer generation. Nothing left to do but smile, smile smile.
He was so handsome back then. I am sure lots of ladies would love to grab that ponytail, lol Bobby aged decades after Jerry left but still sounds fantastic. His is a life well-lived and I hope he keeps going and going and going....
I love this song. It's a moving mixture of optimism and pessimism, hope and cynicism. It takes me back to my high school and college days in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Sentimentality is one of my biggest weaknesses. Or is it a strength? I don't know.
I can’t understand why musicians aren’t in as much awe over these guys as deadheads are!!! The way they build music, keep in time as amazingly as they can, play their own parts masterfully!!! Just amazed every time I hear this one!!!
There are plenty of excellent professional musicians on RU-vid who dissect, instruct and otherwise dedicte hours of quality Dead related content. But yeah. I've had people say to my face, they can't understand how people consider Jerry the next messiah. And I'm wondering how people don't get it. 🤔
Because musicians know the world is full of countless thousands of "unknown" musicians who are "better" than those who become famous. Classical, jazz, and bluegrass musicians, to name just a few genres, blow away those in rock. With rock, it's all about the SONGS, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I dont know any musicians that dont like them. What seems strange to me is when people like a musician, but dont care who that musician likes. Its like they dont want to see how the sausage is made.
And here it is again!! A Dead recording!! The only place on RU-vid where you can read through the comments and not find bickering back and forth, ppl trolling to stir shit up and just rude and derogatory insults being thrown around. Instead you find everyone in one way or another giving gratitude to one another, the world and to this group of musicians. Maybe all of us here are fortunate to still be like kids////////......" And the politicians throwing stones, so the kids they dance they shake their bones"
The main reason for that, is because we're very fortunate and blessed to be part a "GRATE" community of incredible "DEADHEADS". I've met many longtime GRATE friends from long ago, during my years of touring, until about 10 years ago when a drunk driver caused me to flip my Toyota 4runner 5 times, being clinically dead for 3 minutes and 15 seconds, they used the defibrillator paddles on me for 3 times before I had come back. I was in YORK Hospital in a coma for 9 days, but remained in that hospital for a total of 6 weeks. I was then transferred to Moss Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia. While there I had to relearn too walk, talk, read, and write. Then 2 years ago my neorologist found a brain tumor. My 1st neurologist Dr Sterling was a very cool cat. He was a huge Deadhead. Now my neurosurgeon Dr Winer, is the same story. He's an even bigger Deadhead than Sterling. anyway, I just had cool doctors. Dr Winer couldn't get all of it. The portion that has grown tight against the upper left side of my brainstem, plus part of the tumor has grown wrapped around the brainstem. o well, shit happens. Sorry for the length of this aimlessly babbling session. Y'all have a "GRATE" night.
It's in response to the original comment. He said this is "[t]he only place on RU-vid where you can read through the comments and not find bickering back and forth, ppl trolling to stir shit up and just rude and derogatory insults being thrown around." So I replied with a comment that uses all the platitudes that Internet trolls love to fall back on. It's satire. Get it now?
Gotcha man, it just didn't seem satirical when I had read it man. Plus it being right under my comment it seemed as if though it was directed towards me 100%. That's why I didn't really get the whole "rape culture" thing, lol. My bad!!!
I do not hear the flaws others hear when commenting on this version. This is the best version of this great song i have found on YT. Weir's energy and vocals are on point and i love Jerry's playing here. The acoustic setting is nice.
Jerry is a bit out of pocket. He was either high or he meant to do it. It looks like he can’t hear his monitor actually, as it goes on. Great tune nevertheless. Jerry’s fingerprints are indeed rare...
@@agnostic1247 he didn't need to hear Bobby because that parts was deeply imbedded in his head already but he hadn't played with Wasserman in bass often so the non-Phil was throwing his timing a little. But mostly you are correct: Jerry held his guitar up near his face so he can hear it. I've done the same.
mu6best I hadn’t even noticed Wasserman was on bass. I was distracted watching Jerry. I’ve heard a lot of live tapes and it feels to me like Jerry would drift from time to time even under the best of technical circumstances. It’s part of the airiness that is his style. He could play out of pocket and at times it’s like an ethereal dance over the top of the band. He was so unique and a rather underrated talent outside the Dead community. I just read what I wrote. It sounds pretentious and it’s not exactly what I wanted to say but it’s close. Anyway, this was what I implied as Jerry leaving his fingerprints.
Happy Birthday Jerry I've seen you over 500 times in every form solo the dead everybody 65/1995 35 you made me very very happy very happy went to places that I would have never seen ended up living in San Francisco meeting your best friend Can hanging out with him. I wouldn't change anything thank you for the continued releases the music will never stop
Well, that may be a bit of an overstatement but it has a "mythical truth" that can be particularly powerful when heard while consuming a particular mushroom.
Some of my favorite Dead music is Bob singing and Jerry riffing behind. Bobby Mcgee, El Paso, Black Throated Wind, Looks Like Rain, especially in the early 70's. Listen to the last night of Winterland '74 El Paso, Jerry rocks it out while Bob sings. I really grew up on early 70's shows and I've never lost my my love of the sound. The Black Throated Wind from Steal Your Face, the complete version on Relisten, is magic. It goes on past the album and is amazing. Had that tape in the early 80's, think it snapped.
Jerry is not the greatest guitarist ever. But there is no other guitarist I’d rather hear. The Greatful Dead is something special. They have no rival. Nothing can touch them. If you’re a Head, you’re lucky. We got IT!! Others, I’m sorry for you
Jerry is at the hieght of his addiction here. Much like the drummer of guns and roses at the same exact time. Jerry's later acoustic wizardry is recorded a few years later at msg on his cd. For the song, the wier/ Wasserman stones and also victim are excellent
Bobby had his moments, great rhythm sideman, and there are a few songs where he is just wow. He is a victim of circumstance, and in his life the circumstances came to fruition.
Rip On Bobby ... Is he the victim or the crime? I don’t know that I’d call him a victim of circumstance. He’s more the Saint of Circumstance if you really look at it.
Amazing rendition of this song, thanks for sharing!! Definitely going in my favorites And I personally feel that this is a great example of how "on" those two can be. Bob gives Jerry some damn good rhythm.
My memory of this song was hearing it for the first time at Ventura Fairgrounds about 83 or so. 84 maybe? In any event they had played it a few times and word was out and a couple tapes. I liked it then and I like it now. I felt it was pretty different for the dead.
Seeing. that acoustic guitar n Jerry's. hand is like seeing Lennon's. Mother. At MSGarden !! Innocent.!! And eternal !! Thanks. for some of the best music,. ever !
Wish they had shown a little more of Rob Wasserman - some of the best of this tune is near the end (c. 8:00 and on) when he and Garcia were tossing a few ideas back and forth, obviously to Garcia's delight.
Nice jem to stumble upon. My 1st Dead album was Reconing. Took me a number of shows before hearing this song- such memories, glad to have grown up Then - there will never again be a band to tour and concerts to attend Like The Grateful Dead
Yea you make a great point, I always wonder who the 1 tool is that gives Jerry a thumbs down low ever.....you don't give your delic- Claus a thumbs down EVA!
I got on the bus at age 8 June of 85, Hershey Pennsylvania to be exact. It's something I'll never forget, saw the rest of that summer tour and I've been riding the bus ever since. They are much more than just music, they are bigger then music, they fed off of us while we were feeding off them from show to show... It's not that they are the best at what they do........ THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES TO DO WHAT THEY DO. AS far as Jerry and his guitar playing he's definitely in the top five, when you have people like Eric Clapton just to name one saying in interviews that he doesn't know how he did the things he did, the riffs and notes he would put together on his guitar, Eric said he tried to recreate some of his solos and host couldn't do it and he wasn't the only one to say this like that. When Jerry was on he couldn't be touched. The fact that we were alive and got to see Jerry, Brent and the boys while they graced this earth to me is a true blessing and a gift... There 2 generations of there that ask they know is the renditions of the boys videos and recordings of the boys after Jerry left this broke down palace. Has there been some magic made since then yes but nothing, NOTHING LIKE THE MAGIC THE GRATEFUL DEAD HAVE US. IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW. I'M SO GLAD I WAS THERE. I'VE SEEN THE BOYS 187 TIMES, JGB I SAW 104 WEIR AND WASSERMAN 74 TIMES, IF YOU INCLUDE RATDOG IN THAT WELL THEN IT WOULD BE JUST SHY OF 200.. I ALSO SEEN EVERY RENDITION SINCE THEN AND IM GRATEFUL FOR EVERY MINUTE, GRATEFUL TO STILL BE ABLE TO GET TOGETHER WITH OLD FRIENDS WHILE MAKING NEW FRIENDS AND TALK ABOUT THE PAST MEMORIES WHILE MAKING NEW MEMORIES. THERE NEVER WILL BE ANOTHER GRATEFUL DEAD, JERRY, BRENT, BOBBY, PHIL, MICKEY AND BILLY. WHAT THEY DID FOR US, FOR MUSIC, FOR LIFE AND FOR THE JAM BAND SCENE AND ALL THE JAM BANDS THAT ARE AROUND TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE IS BECAUSE OF THEM.. THEIR MUSIC TRULY WILL NEVER STOP. THANK YOU BOYS FOR THE MUSIC, THE FRIEND'S AND THE MEMORIES OLD AND NEW, THANK YOU FOR THE LONG STRANGE TRIP THAT I WILL TAKE TILL THE DAY I'M LAID TO REST. NFA FAMILY (~);-}
