Yet another example of Goldsmith’s greatness. How many composers could have created such a brilliant mix of old (his original PotA music) and new (“hip” early 70s)? He had no equal, particularly in the versatility department. There was no genre he could not make a brilliant score for.
The "Mod" sound that he incorporates into the score was very popular in 1967 through late 1969. By the time he did this score, it was somewhat dated. That's not a serious criticism of his work, he was using it as a sort of musical bridge to bring the POTA characters and themes into the then contemporary world of the early seventies. As a child of nine when this film was released, the Mod sound already had a sort of nostalgic feel to it.
Perhaps, but you could still hear this sound around quite a bit in the early '70s. Plus notice how Goldsmith weaves in various themes from the original POTA, a very few electronic touches that point to his later Logan's Run scote, and a bit of early '70s funk.
Yeah, Goldsmith is great. Hugely different take from the strong neoclassical inspired work he had grooving for the original film just three years before. Makes it feel like the studio hounds were on him to make it sound "current", "hip", "modern", and of course the brilliant Goldsmith crushed it.
I remember watching the movie for the first time about 35 years ago..the brilliance of this theme has impressed me ever since. There is not a day going by I listen to it..
I've loved this film since it first appeared on network TV in '73 or '74. The score here sounds in part like Planet of the Apes meets The Graduate. There are also anticipations here of Goldsmith's Logan's Run and Capricorn One scores. In any case, it's brilliant.
IMO, the opening bass riff in C has alternating bars of 6/8 and 7/8, until it goes to A, still to work that bit out, but this is great stuff from Jerry. Anyone know where you can get the official score?
Welcome Gentlemen to the United St... Milo, Cornelius and Zira Remove their Helmets to a Horrified General who sees the Ape like forms in front of him, Great 3rd outing of the Apes Quintology
hello everyone knows what is called the theme of the planet of the apes where a duel occurs in a Coliseum the theme is like a musical organ is a famous theme used in series and movies. Thanks
@@SoulStylistJukeBox it's still disappointing compared to the 1968 original though. Fox treated the last 3 films as 'B' movies and it's a bit dispiriting, even if I love the actors they cast and the makers did their best with the small budgets and no franchise road map.
Well, on the one hand ESCAPE was the best of the sequels, but every minute of it looked and played like a made-for-tv movie. All the sequels really underlined how vastly superior the first one was. At least in this one, you weren't reminded that the studio abandoned the really individualized ape make-ups for cheapo full-head masks because there's only three apes in it!
True enough. Beneath was always my favorite of the sequels. The underground society of nuclear bomb-worshiping mutants was so schlocky and expanded the world nicely. Escape turned into a cheap time-travel thing.
