Where do all these comments about Hampson being a tenor come from? He won Met regionals and the Met final as a baritone and has always performed as a baritone. He is especially known for his Figaro.

Hampson won the Met auditions as a baritone. In the Northwest division, he sang the Largo al factotum and was the audience favorite. The following year he won in San Francisco, which qualified him for the New York finals, which started him on his international career. The year after, he produced a semi-staged version in Spokane to thank local supporters - singing Figaro, of course.

I love both of them, but since people are talking about this I thought I’d jump in. Voices don’t fit into specific “parts”. That’s a stupid idea to believe in, since voices are so different. If you do want to use the Fach system, Thomas Hampson is a high baritone, but a baritone nevertheless. He can sing in a tessitura that’s a little higher than a normal baritone’s, and that’s what makes him perfect for high baritone parts (including carmine burana, which I love him in). He is leagues ahead of many of his colleagues in terms of his acting, technique, and language. If you really couldn’t spot his genius in his clip, opera is not for you.

@Barone Vitellio Scarpia cannot disagree, and I saw a few other listeners complaining on that. But he is the GO_TO_Baritone for Met and have a lot of fans, if you go to his singing on Steven Froster's beautiful dreamer, will feel even more so, but it is a great classic hometown song for him.
