Captain Hendrix is a favourite return guest for sure. His proposal to police the Shadow Fleet is totally doable apparently, it's a matter of the coast guards of relevant nations whose waters they pass through doing the job. But it seems these coast guards in the Baltic Sea and elsewhere are over stretched. Maybe the USN and other navies as he suggested, Britain France, need to get involved. A great channel to follow on here if people want more maritime learning is "Whats going on with shipping", I am pretty sure that Captain Hendrix probably is aware of the retired merchant mariner who runs the channel Sal Mercogliano. I also agree with the Captain's push back on Ukraine having "no navy", well we do have a navy, it's as he said, a new type of navy! - I suppose the correct term is "Ukraine does not have a conventional capital ship type navy"!. Lastly, I also think that the tactics we have used to "own" the Black Sea and run off the russian fleet is only possible in an enclosed sea, it would not work to run off the USN in open waters for instance. Sea baby drones do not have the range to maraud the Pacific or Atlantic for example.
@GrahamCStrouse
@GrahamCStrouse Месяц назад
Gonna have to start finding space on ships for a lot more remote weapon stations equipped with 30mm cannons, though. Much less expensive way of dealing with drones than chucking SM-2s at them.
@irongron
@irongron Месяц назад
@@GrahamCStrouse yea, I get the feeling the USN will deal with the drone threat a tad better than decrepit russian navy did. Maybe some kind of re-tasked Aegis system for taking out sea drones or something like you mentioned.

It's really good to think about the questions who are we, what are our values and how to defend them. Only this will strengthen our democracies and also help Ukraine to win over russia. On the same token, we cannot anymore shut our eyes on the crimes elsewhere, say in the Middle East (I'm thinking Iran and Israel). And we need to own our mistakes too.

A spike in energy costs leads to a cost of living crisis for ordinary folks, it’s not just about elections
@18_rabbit
@18_rabbit Месяц назад
and a spike happens due to the 'unpredictability factor' WITHIN the price-over-tme factor. This is deeper in the weeds stuff that most ppl comprehend! Most ppl do not understand very deep mkts like oil. The chaos that the russian war has created is keeping a premium on the price of energy !! This is not intuitive stuff and most ppl DO NOT grasp it! Ya'll can read all about it online, many great complicated articles and papers on it. Ru needs to therefore be strongly firmly thwarted and is NOT BEING during this entire past 2.5 yrs. The US and Europe and other nato-alligned asians, need to decide what to do about energy and russia

Depriving Russia of the ability to profit from oil sales is the point of the sanctions. Insofar as we fail to enforce the sanctions against the so-called "Shadow Fleet" Ukraine is fully justified in pursuing the same goal by attacking their oil production capacity. If we want oil prices to stay low it's entirely up to us to keep them low by stepping up our enforcement of sanctions.

Something occurred to me about Germany, how it quickly became imperialist in WW2 to benign in the post war time. So many of the “bad guys” went to Brazil or other South American countries. Could that have affected Germany’s penchant for cruelty and conquest? In Japan I heard the cute cartoon and stuffed animal styles like Hello Kitty was intended to affect Japanese culture. The Japanese army had an official law against rape but it was rampant when they attacked China and other countries. That culture of oppression and violence is hard to undo. Somehow they managed it. Russia faces similar issues where we hear of horrendous acts of violence conducted in Ukraine. What means would work to see dramatic change there? Likewise in North Korea?

9:40 Muscovite people have no agency whatsoever and one third of them actually does support the nuclear strike on Ukraine, so this entire argument is weird to say the least. Muscovy already used a tactical nuclear missile on the Lugansk airport back in 2015 and the only reason why they do not use it now is that the tactical nuclear warheads are less powerful and less destructive than conventional FAB-1500 or FAB-3000 bombs.

I would like to say something about the last few minutes of this conversation: I think it is right to say - in relation to Russia - "let the people feel how deep the hole is that they have dug themselves." Then the discussion turned to economic aspects. What I think is that ANY form of "economy" is harmful if it is used in an exaggerated way. A specific company was also mentioned: Apple. Why is Apple not banned from having its devices assembled in China? It's clear - Apple would then have to spend a lot more money on western employees and workers and that would either reduce profits or Apple would have to sell its iPhones for $5,000 a piece....... So that is also a hole that was dug by itself - this time on the western side. And then a look inside any - or EVERY computer: one half is "made or assembled in Taiwan" and the other half is "made or assembled in China". And that is the same in both Europe and the USA, for example. We - Europeans and also the citizens of the USA - would be standing half-naked on the street, without computers or smartphones, if all the parts that are "made/assembled in China" were to suddenly disappear into thin air. That is capitalism - but an exaggerated, harmful form.
@irongron
@irongron Месяц назад
Yes, but the point is, all the innovation is from Europe or the USA. Russia and China only steal ideas and IP. Manufacturing can be returned to the USA and Europe. Apple's markups are off the scale, Why is it that you can buy 2 (or even 3) top of the line "windows" PC's or laptops for the price of one Mac or Macbook ? Apple have always been a rip off. Here in Ukraine a Macbook is like 100,000 UAH but a decent windows laptop is like 30 - 40,000 UAH!!! (my wife bought a really good ASuS laptop for 15,000 UAH new). Apple make nice stuff but is it worth the preposterous shake down ? The lithographic machines that make high end chips all come from one country too - The Netherlands. Do you consider that a hole we have dug for ourselves too ? ( I don't, the Dutch are decent members of the world community). Lastly, trust me, if the price of iPhones goes up to $5,000, the Apple fan boys will still pay it!!! 🤣
@stefantaubert
@stefantaubert Месяц назад
@@irongron "Yes, but the point is, all the innovation is from Europe or the USA." -> Yes, this is correct. "Manufacturing can be returned to the USA and Europe" -> Yes, it CAN, but is actual NOT. Tell apple to build up the factories (over night) in USA or Europe and hire the workers for an amount of money, from which they can live a good life and pay for first-class health insurance, etc. And please note that I did not say that EVERYTHING comes from China - but TOO MUCH. And that is for cost reasons only. From china alone comes more as from the western world combined. In order to compensate for everything that comes from China, hundreds of factories would have to be built here first, and that won't happen overnight. And as I said, our western workers and employees would then have to earn enough money from it. But that would mean that the products would have to become correspondingly more expensive, or the manufacturers and sellers would have to forego profits. Do you think they will do that - forego profits? You can't include Ukraine or its economy at this point in time. I would like to give you an example: a friend of mine (also a German) wanted to buy a new car 2 years ago, a certain BMW. He saved up for it for 5 years. Then he looked for where he could get this particular car for the cheapest price. He found it in Spain. He planned to go on holiday to Spain with his family and buy the car there. OK, so they were in Spain. He then went to the BMW dealer and wanted to buy the car. But there was a surprise: The dealer told him that he could not sell him the car, because BMW had forbidden him from selling cars to Germans at Spanish prices. The same car was 3,000 euros cheaper in Spain than in Germany. Why is that? Because people in Spain earn less on average than in Germany. BMW therefore has to sell the same products cheaper in Spain so that Spaniards can buy them at all. And where there is more to be had, BMW makes more money. And that's how it is with all products, not just cars.
@irongron
@irongron Месяц назад
@@stefantaubert Wow, your friend who went to Spain for the cheap Beamer got rolled😉. I had to laugh a bit but really that is a 💩 act from BMW. But it proves their markups are outrageous if they can sell stuff "cheaper" in lower per capita GDP countries. This demonstrates there is room for price adjustment to bring manufacturing back. As you say they can't build factories overnight, but a slow rise in costs would be better than a huge one all at once, if the western countries want to decouple form China. We all have to take these hits. For instance here in Ukraine power was subsidised for 3 decades. Cheap power. But in June our power went up 80%! We had to pay almost double for less power (rolling blackouts), So we have to pay for the stuff russia bombed to get rebuilt! (russia should have to pay, but that's where we are). Anyway, your valid points say how difficult it is, but the change must be made, because even if China was to have a revolution and toss out the CCP, there is no guarantee we won't get another pile of garbage country like russia with a new dicatorship.
@stefantaubert
@stefantaubert Месяц назад
@@irongron That is exactly what I was saying - just in different words. "The West" needs to become more independent of China when it comes to mass products. And I emphasize "mass products". It doesn't matter whether a few luxury items, which only millionaires or billionaires can afford anyway, are a little cheaper or a little more expensive. All products that ordinary people need to live and consume must be produced more in our own economic area (the economic area of the USA and Europe). I am not saying that trade with China or the manufacture of products should be stopped completely - neither now nor in the future - but it should be reduced - a real balance should be (re)established. And in this regard, unfortunately, large, financially strong companies have far too much influence on our politics, in my opinion.
@irongron
@irongron Месяц назад
@@stefantaubert Indeed, I hear you 👍. Just to tell you a funny story, here in Ukraine we are stuck with China for those mass products if you want to buy with online shopping. The reason is almost all sellers on eBay and most other seller sites won't ship to Ukraine due to the war, but Aliexpress, they will ship to Ukraine. Ok, that is war related but still a bemusing note to top off this conversation!
