Jerry Jeff Walker - Mr Bojangles (live solo TV 1969)

Courtesy of the Clark Santee video archive, few songs have such impact as Jerry Jeff Walker's Mr Bojangles, a powerful song covered by Bob Dylan and Sammy Davis Jnr and delivered a global chart-topper for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. At the dawn of the Seventies, a new breed of American singer/songwriters emerged, redefining popular music with classic songs reflecting the times. Jerry Jeff Walker (seen here in 1969) remains rightly regarded as amongst the very best of the bunch.

Must have been around 1970 when we went to hear Jerry Jeff at an Ohio college. He was seated on a platform in a gymnasium & all of us sat on the floor. What a wonderful storyteller he was. Will never forget. Thanks for the memories.

I was a kid but because Mom took me everywhere I got to see my Dad when he covered this in a basement bar in Phoenix (the Jolly Roger)- sang it and accompanied himself on a pared down drum kit. This one and Arlo Guthries City of New Orleans. Always gets me and reminds me of Dad, too. He just passed this time last year. Music is so powerful!

I hear you ... the memories that come from when you were young are released..and it's wonderful and awful. At the same time... my uncles were musicians who ran with many big names ..the stories they told and the songs they sang...I am from an area west of phx.. in the hills ..a truly dead end town..had to turn around where the road ended and go back the way you came from lol Tru story.. any way .. I feel you I really do..

My uncle/godfather used to sing this song walking around his house. April 15th, 2005, Uncle Ken died. I always listen to this a few times around the anniversary of his death, and especially on that day. He was more of a father to me than my own father. And his being gone still hurts. And even if I'm in public, and this song plays, tears will fall from my eyes. ❤

Lets Lface it, the Nitty Gritty Dirt bands cover of the song helped put them on the map, not to mention Samy Davis Juniors version of it didn't do him any harm either, so the brilliance of Jerry helped them pay the bills, as well.

Also shows how young he was when he wrote this classic. Will look up his date of birth after leaving this site to get his age- certainly Bojangles travelled with him for many, many years.

I hear other instruments but don't see a band, and it's by a fellow who did film/tv stuff, so, I am thinking that they had him play and/or sing to a backing track. Way back then, especially, live t.v. performance could be a challenge. I have never seen this video and I am a huge fan; this version may be the best I've ever heard! I have always LOVED his voice and, here, he hasn't even worn it in quite yet. But it's pure. As he aged, his voice was always so comforting to me. (BTW, the band could be off camera.)
