@@JayIceColdD It's actually a different skill not necessarily a better one. To be able to write at a high level, retain and perform all that data usually sounds better, more coherent and more sonically pleasing. Someone just guessing some shit is a novelty act which some can do better than others, however has limitations.
@@KingAuthor83 different skills, yes. But at it's essence, hip hop and freestyling have their roots in spontaneity and the inherent ability to produce rhyming wordplay on the fly. I mean, to me, a good verse off the done is always more impressive than a rehearsed one.
@@JayIceColdD It has it's roots in both it being a craft that's practiced and on the fly. We can never eliminate the science of any craft in hip hop and there is still a debate whether "off the top" is the original meaning of the freestyle. I respect your view though.
He has a disjointed flow. That's the way he rocked it. Back in the early 90s you had mc's who used the offbeat style which was one of the styles that KRS invented.
+sebu187 Propably all (or 99%) of freestyles are made from small phrases already known. Most of rhymes used are known for us. Ofcourse simetimes pure freestyle happens and someone uses new (for him) rhyme he never used with other word before. And that is pure freestyling but because of what I wrote, and you wrote - I think that "freestyle" is little too overrated these days. I don't know why people go so wild because of them.
OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SEES IT!!! I fuckin love Big L, he's my dude but his shit is pre written. Granted, he doesn't fuck up which kinda makes him still one of the best cause he's so well prepared, but he doesn't freestyle. I've heard so many Big L verses used over and over again more so than any other artist I've heard.
@JayIceColdD About 98 percent of rappers recite pre written verses and have been since like 95 lol Hes one of the few....big l never rhymed off the top either like people thought.
I bet it's written (& not even very good). I saw Jeru try and freestyle mid 90's at Roots weekly rap battle NYC at Wetlands. I was a huge Jeru fan but I was shocked he couldn't freestyle AT ALL!!! He trying 3 times & he just mumbled & went silent a few times..it was embarrasing!!! Black Thought finally had to step in and bail him out.
How is that a written? That's as much an off-the-top freestyle as it can possibly be. Most rappers can't freestyle anyway even in the past, so I wouldn't exactly hold it against Jeru.
