The Torah portion of Naso features the Nazarite, an individual who seeks to draw closer to G-d, and so declares a vow of abstention, forbidding upon his or her self that which Torah permits. What is the motivation for taking such drastic action? Is it an admirable display of extra pious behavior - or is it a sort of sin? Is this a last resort, or a lifestyle that we should seek to emulate…a way of becoming holier? The Nazarite and his vow foreshadows the most important question of all: how should we be serving G-d in this material world - and is our goal to be a part of this world, or to separate ourselves from it?
