It's time for the budget upgrade guide for the Jeskai Cycling "Timeless Wisdom" C20 precon. We're taking a look at the full list, analyzing all the stats and discussing the reprint value. Then we give you 10 cards to add and 10 cards to remove in order to get this deck quickly tuned-up and primed for combat with "real" Commander decks.

Agree. I'd actually like The Command Zone to become a group show, where each episode 2 of 5 or 6 hosts host it (almost always having a Jimmy or Josh, though). It just gives more viewpoints and will free up the main hosts too. Between Craig, DJ Ashlen-Rose and Jimmy and Josh, there's 5 already! Add in Ladee and maybe Kyle, and boom, there's plenty to choose from! (Note: I do love Jimmy and Josh but their playstyles and values are well-documented, so would just be interesting to see, say, Kyle's cEDH perspective or DJ's 'janky', fun comboish brew mindset widen the whole show a little more!)

Seeing Toothy reminded me of a game I played once with a friend. He was playing Pir and Toothy as his commanders and he was absolutely dominating the game, and took the other 3 players out with his 45/45 Toothy. I managed to draw a removal spell and he had to draw 45 cards and decked out. Probably one of the best ways I've won a game

Drawing cards feels so awesome you sometimes get drunk on the power. Once I cast Cyclonic Rift overloaded with a Multani, Maro-Sorcerer on board. I resolved my commander Prime Speaker Zegana, and promptly drew around 40+ cards leaving me with about 4 cards in library and I ended up decking myself. Not my proudest moment.

One great card from the M21 set is Teferi's Ageless Insight. It's the second effect of Alhammarret's Archive for 2UU, and since it's an enchantment it can be searched with Idyllic Tutor.

There is no way you have intact ultra pro sleeves from 8 years ago. In the last year, they had better sleeve quality. Before that the sleeves would peel very quickly.

Ultra pro sleeves have very differing degrees of durability even within the same product line. I have bought orange Eclipse sleeves that fell apart at the corners after the very first game. Others have been pristine for months. My impression is that pre-Eclipse the quality was almost always terrible, now it’s mostly solid with rare exceptions.

I would consider Improbable Alliance for this deck, you get a 1/1 flying Faerie on the same trigger as Gavi, and it's only 2 mana to cast. Actually "draw your second card in a turn) was the draft theme for UR in Eldraine, so there's more examples out there, but the Alliance pays out in flying tokens.

Oh yes. Only downside is that seven cards in your hand can be hard to maintain, but add in Alhammarret's Archive or Rielle, the Everwise and you solve that problem.

Next time you do a underrated card list, you should put languish in it. 4 mana for -4/-4 to everything is really good for it's mana cost. I've never seen anyone else use it, but it can help a lot, especially against token decks.

I built Brallin and Shabraz, I had most of the cards in my locust god deck and Alela deck so it was pretty easy to build. I think I only need like 14 cards, looking forward to playing that!

@@iPhone4Gaddict the deck is super grindy. Runs a ton of mana rocks in order to continue casting things while Lavinia stops your opponents when they have no lands. Knowledge pool is in there as well for a similar reason. The deck wins using stuff like Luminarch Ascension or Azors Elocutors. Also I include Sun Titan and Crucible of Worlds in order to replay lands along with lands like Ghost Town, Darksteel Citadel and Cascading Cataracts.

I feel like you’re adding a little too many cards that synergize only with astral drift and astral slide. Those are two cards in the 99, you won’t even have them 50% of the time. Idk, feels kind of specific

In most decks I think you would be correct, but remember how fast you can cycle through your deck with this, plus the Idyllic Tutor to find one. The sheer amount of cards you can draw makes it much more likely that you'll find one of those.

I would want at least one more tutor to ensure it hits, I forgot, is Academy Rector banned? Edit: Checked, it's legal but $37, and you'd still need a way to kill it other than chumping, asking someone politely to block it, or pointing your own kill spell at it.

@@alexanderforbes1452 Are you pertaining to Abandoned Sarcophagus? The card will just be exiled by the Sarcophagus if the card with cycling goes to the yard if it's not because of cycling it... Bag of Holding just exiles a card whenever you discard it... So it perfectly works... The only nonbo I can see is that you can't cast the cycling cards if the Bag will exile them, which is not really a nonbo for me... Both of them provide reuse of your cycled cards, so both are must-runs in my opinion...

I'd replace Niv-Mizzet the Firemind with Niv-Mizzet Parun or possibly even the OG Niv-Mizzet Dracogenius. Firemind has an easy tap to draw but if you've got mana open and instants to play, Parun can give you more draws across the full turn cycle if your opponents don't play any instants or sorceries. Dracogenius lets you pay BR to draw a card so you can freecycle Gavi then get another draw on each opponent's turn. I also think Izzet Charm has a possible spot in Gavi or the Skyshark Partners for the draw two cards then discard two cards mode.

even tho i dont like the card that much protal mage won me that game with this deck... it was down to 4 health( me ) and 7 health (my buddy) right after a board whipe and i had no creatures to play besode portale mage whihc ive had in my hand almost the whole game but hadent discarded for this exact moment and he just played a 7/4 induscturble vigilance flyer as his only creature on the field and when he attack ge'd thought he just won but then i slapped down portal mage and mad his own creture attack homself for exactly enough damage to finish him off and ohh it felt sooo soo good

Guys, NEVER remove wheels from your deck. It is amazing way to refill your hand, discard junk and mess with your opponents Play wheels if you wanna be a better player

Yes, I'm also a bit confused about removing windfall. In decks that cast a lot of spells it's a nice way to draw a lot of cards and also hinder the gameplan of your opponents. And in this deck you will have lots of value from drawing and discarding. Also with the cycling on most of your cards I would assume your radom 7 will be often better than your oppents'.

By it's nature, a cycling deck doesn't require wheels (with the only exception I can think of being Timetwister) to function efficiently. A cycling deck churns through multiple cards a turn (and not only theirs). Once you refine the deck, your whole deck is pretty much about cycling cards and cards that interact with you cycling. Wheels are redundant in a deck where you have a hand full of cards that replace themselves while also functioning at stopping your opponents from enacting their game plan AND enhancing your board state. A agree with your sentiment in general though. Inasmuch as, any deck that spits out their hand early or can get use out of their graveyard is doing themselves a disservice by not running wheel effects in their deck.

Theres a new legendary enchantment in M21 that has the same draw an extra card effect as Alhammaret's archive and costs one less mana. It's also not $20, I think it's called Teferi's Timeless Wisdom or something

Great call Dr. Alkk! It's called Teferi's Ageless Insight, cost 2UU (2 colorless, 2 blue), Legendary Enchantment, and "If you would draw a card except the first one you draw in each of your draw steps, draw two cards instead." You miss out on life gain, but it is currently around $1, making it an amazing addition in a budget deck.

Surprised they didn't recommend Bag of Holding. For 1 mana you store the cycled cards, and then for 4 you get them all back, then you cycle them for free using the commander and fluctuator during your opponent's turns, get more cards, and more creatures.

but you have a chance to loose them all too. Also I disagree with them about the 4 mana cards that does damage over cycle card in grave because with 31 cycling cards we are talking about a 20+ damage/ life gain cards even if you have to wait you have a finish card in your hand that's incredible.

@@Abraktil Sure, you can also lose them to any sort of graveyard removal, and they've been putting Bojuka Bog everywhere lately, as well as other graveyard hate; that's not really any different. As for the damage spell, it's unlikely to pull it off, so that's why they removed it. It's an extremely greedy card which really needs a lot of things to go right: you cycle ~20 cards within 8 turns or less, you have the card in hand, and no one counters it or removes your graveyard. I'd rather run Lightning Rift and guarantee I can ping people for 2 damage every turn.

The very first card I thought of that wasn't mentioned was Amulet of Vigor. With a substantial percentage of the landbase coming in tapped if you get stuck having to drop one, being able to untap them, including the bounce lands, cycle the cards you bounced and still have mana up for more cycles outside of Gavi's first turn ability is vital. Needs to go in.

Also don't foget Nadir Kraken for the Cycling Synergies! Since you aren't paying mana to cycle with Gavi, you can probably still pay the 1 mana, meaning you are getting a field full of tokens and a big threat that eventually needs to be dealt with

Brallin and Shabraz obviously scream "WHEEL EFFECTS" rather than cycling; you want to be discarding and drawing tons of cards at once in order to maximize the damage output from Brallin and, at the same time, pump your commanders to make them dangerous attackers and put them out of lethal damage range from attackers/blockers and burn spells.

Command Zone: don't commit too hard to strategies your deck is hardly in on Also command zone: here's a bunch of cards you should add in to specifically work with Astral Drift and Astral Slide!

Lol good point. But to be fair: drift, slide, escape protocol, and all the tutors combine nicely with the inherent card filtration of the deck, and you'll probably be able to find one of those three somewhat reliably. And the effect is so powerful anyway, it's worth finding. Not to mention how broken the deck can get, just fiend hunter or mulldrfiter and a few cycle cards can wreck a table, with slide/drift/protocol.

I think you definitely would want time spiral but maybe not windfall. And temple is the worlds worst ancient tomb, like 5th or 6th best.

I’m with you on that. Sadly people don’t understand the concept of social distancing. This notion that people have to group up to make content or videos is nonsense when you can do it over some form of Skype. It’s not just CommandZone all these RU-vidrs do it. I know people who have to close there business because there’re “non essential” but saw recently a RU-vidr that details cars is allowed to be up and running no problems. Lol the world is a messed up place

Your characterization of Pact of Negation and Force of Will as being "unhealthy" when discussing Decree of Silence is unfair. They may be inappropriate for many groups, but they are essential components to certain styles of EDH play which are very fun for those who partake in them, such as cEDH. In fact, when you describe a Decree of Silence as something which "every single player might have to contribute to...get rid of it", that sounds like a fun time to me. I like everyone involved and lots of interaction at the table, and cards which require answers forms some of the tensest, most exciting moments in the game. I like games in which everyone must consider not only their plan but how they might be able to disrupt the other players' attempts to win and how they're going to protect their own attempt to win from disruption.

You're building too much around Astral Slide and not the actual Commander. Those ETB only creatures rarely gonna get that value, I wouldn't recommend them.

Depending on how many cards you draw in a turn, you could discard 15 ish cards then draw 15 cards. Then discard to handsize and attacking does 40 to one player, and 22 damage to others

@@leorettie2252 yeah that is a possibility. But I got the impression that Craig thought that the card triggers on ANY discard. Machine gunning down your opponents probably involves infinite mana + an draw x cards spell + go to end step

I love this deck, cycling was an almost there deck that needed a few more good payoffs and to get a bit more cycling utility along with reprints. Also fires of invention in a cycling deck seems nuts, it essentially triples your mana. Kinda sad no green, Ayulas influence, tuskar, life from the loam etc are all so insanely good. And mending of dominaria, splendid rec, and the merfolk, along with ramunamp, wrenn and six are all great payoffs since you can get so many cycling lands in 4 colors. Discarding 3 lands to influence casting loam then cycling a card and getting loam back and discarding three lands again, casting loam and discarding 3 lands, if one of those has cycling for a mana its just 3 2/2s and draw a card loam and dredge for 3 mana. Could definitely see some 5 color flash rector pod cycling deck with a focus on land cycling seems worth building.

I'm simple, I like to pay my taxes and blow up my opponents lands. Since new perspectives was released I've always wanted to cycle a decree of annihilation for free .. I think that now I feel closer than ever

@@saxxioxo7274 If you wanna make that combo with Decree of Annihilation even worse then try out Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. Her ultimate, which is a -8, gives you an emblem that gives you no maximum hand size and when any card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you can put it back into your hand. What this means is if you can get that ultimate off you can cycle Decree of Annihilation off every turn making sure no one gets to play land ever again for the entire game. Tricky to do? Yes. Mean and satisfying when it goes off? Absolutely.

Love cycling videos just what I need to get it going the blood I love it. I always watch these before I go out and get my body moving. I always watch one of these, and then put up my heavy playlist like Delta Parole, Three Days Grace, System and then I just go haaaaard!!!! Tactic hasnt let me down yet.

@@Mattismen if you are in cleanup step with 8 cards and curiosity, you will draw your deck, or kill the others in the attempt. Or you could have a discard outlet to require less setup
