Winner of the 2014 Chicago Tribune Heartland Award for Nonfiction.
In five years, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life-to drugs, accidents, suicide, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses, one after another, led Ward to write her remarkable memoir "Men We Reaped." Called “raw, beautiful and dangerous” by the New York Times Book Review, it is a haunting and essential story.
This program is presented in partnership with the Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row series.
This program was recorded on Nov 1, 2014 as part of the 25th Anniversary Chicago Humanities Festival, Journeys: chf.to/2014Journeys

This is a very interesting talk, I appreciate her explaining code switching to fit in. There is something both very strong and melancholy about her, I wish her peace

08CARIB oh don't worry she is ok. She is my Mimi. And I am very proud of her for making it this far!

Some sensitivity, empathy, indeed humanity in the part of the interviewer would've been great. She was mechanical, coldly clinical. Even as a viewer, one has a sense of appreciation of the profound pain-past and present that Ms. Ward has. (The only exception was the question about her name.)

She's a wonderful writer. Unfortunately, this interview is absent of the moments of joy I've seen in previous interviews. This is a poor match. I wanted to leave several times. But Jesmyn Ward held me there.
