What strikes me more than her incredible technique is how incredible her ears are. She hears every incredibly tiny nuance, and cares enough about the those tiny subtleties to replicate them perfectly, which is a hundred times harder than just "playing the notes".
This is probably the most impressive guitar performance I ever heard. She's not just playing this most complicated piece flawlessly, she's puting a groove in every note as well. How does one remember a piece like this anyway? This is hard in so many ways (odd timing, hybrid picking, fast staccato runs) and she makes it look... effortless.
Dante it’s a combination of raking, alternate, and economy picking techniques, and she’s really good at all of them, as well as her sweeping. She’s just one helluva articulate player.
Jess I don't know HOW you managed to acquire this type of raw talent and skill at such a young age, but its incredible!! Goven is even inspired!! You are effortless, smooth and certainly play with the feel of Guthrie Genius, which until now I thought was the best I've ever heard. It's like he discipled you at 5 and breathed his skills into your hands, and now he's you and your him... I just can't get over how young you are to be playing such complex music flawlessly. Seriously, kudos!!
This girl is one of the worlds greates guitar talents in her age bracket. Jess plays with style and emotion way beyond her years. I'm 54 and I've seen a lot of talent in my life. She is this good now. What will she be like when she really gets it down? Jess is working with the right people. Since I discorved the Jam Tracks studio I have been introduced to one after another great guitarists. I'm so happy with Jam Tracks for finding thes guys and promoting them. They are all great!
I have tears in my eyes too, such talent so young. But it amuses me how so many of these comments applaud or critique her technique and skill. People, she's not reading a score or playing Guthrie note for note -- this is her interpretation, her improvisations on this song. She's an artist. They're her notes, this is far more than gifted technique, this is genius.

Jess is great. I thought about her when someone was mentioning room 335 and I thought about Jess. I hadn't realized how much time has gone by. So came to see what she is up to. Fantastic talent.
I think this is an amazing performance and you need to watch it at least 4 times. In any order watch concentrating on the left hand, the right hand, the facial expressions to include the zone she is in, and then watch the overall performance. I can understand why Guthrie Govan and the Aristocrats were blown away by Jess.
Some guitarists play notes. Jess plays music. At a young age she understands melody, technique, dynamics, and how to use all that. Even when she plays fast runs, each note is clean and clear. I truly believe she has an inner gift that cannot be taught. You have to be born with it.

While I agree that her skills are impressive, practice beats talent man, I think if you practice something with proper form and discipline, you can achieve whatever you propose yourself :)
+DrummerDanVa I (respectfully) disagree with the other responders; I believe you are right. Practice teaches you notes. YOU turn the notes into music. But we really don't know whether Jess is capable of that, bcos here she is just copying. Copying exceedingly well, and a superb piece of music written by an incredibly talented musician, but copying nonetheless. More power to her.
I get what you are saying and I am also looking forward, hopefully soon, to when Jess is playing HER music. One thing I can say is imagine a classical violin concerto. Every violinist who ever plays it plays the exact same notes, but yet it doesn't sound the same due to the skills and musicianship of the performer. Her playing has nuances and little pieces of musicality that usually takes a player many years to develop. If you shut your eyes and listened I don't think you would imagine what you are hearing is being performed by an 18 year old with only 6 years playing experience and a lot of that self taught early on.

'Tell ya ... I grimace normally when I hear (read) when someone declares unequivocally that they just heard the best guitarist in the world on you-tube. After a listen, (because you're curios), the thought comes that they've lived in a tree-house for years and have heard no more than 3 or 4 guitarist since they been down. 'So awesome it's scary. If I stayed 17 years of age- listened & practiced,everything the great guitarists ever put out for 200 yrs. I wouldn't get close 2 this. No.1- 4 sure!

Unfortunately you will never hear music this good on the radio that's why it's only kept to a small amount of people who combed RU-vid and found this stuff some of the best musicians are on RU-vid and I can't believe it this girl is just wonderful

Even though she's playing guthrie as good as anybody can, she's a fantastic guitarist in her own right. I just love how her little fingers finesse and destroy the guitar like no other. Anyone that says girls can't rock need to listen to Jess.

absoloutly outstanding guitar work , what an amazing young talent she is, only 20 and mopping the floor with most players, i love how well her vibrato works for her. I hope a cd is in the works, even if she just does covers, anything would be welcome, lots of luck to her, even though she won't need it , not with this kind of talent.....

First time I've seen or heard this amazingly talented lady play, but certainly not the last. I'm totally impressed and couldn't agree more with those who consider her a MONSTER! I read she's only 17 and yet plays Govan, Hutchings, Carlton and the like, as if she were all of them reincarnate. Totally amazing and gifted artist. Just one question to the 24 people who dislike this video: Are you people guitarists, and if so where can one purchase your albums? Anyone else hear crickets chirping?
