Yes, she really did, I love when people stand for self and and say what makes them real and true to self, I've love this about her, and she is a genuine person to life, God will bless her for that. And if she's w you she's w you whole heartedly, and if something is wrong she don't hold back she tells you. All people should be like JESSI, and me. But we are a rare people. People show fear too much way to much, and God says fear NOONE, nor fear anything as well.😊❤ So yes I love this beautiful lady for who she is Amen🙏🇺🇸💯👑she had been Queen forever just as I have. 🙏 You've got to love JESSI, she's what I call a STRONG LADY INDEED and a true ICON❤❤❤❤❤😊🇺🇸🙏👑👑👑

So basically jessi is saying that other kpop stars are afraid to be themselves because on tv aka their media there is a certain personality type to uphold like being respectful and bright and they need to be consistent with it. The real reason though is because of the hypercritical world they live in in which one wrong move that isn't even wrong to begin with can ruin their careers and the people around them. Take for example with Karina of aespa she was in an interview with Grimes where she said there are a lot of other teams that dont work well together but with aespa they do cause they click as human beings and not just as co workers. Its a fair thing to say cause there are kpop groups that don't work well together. But since she said this people are calling her pick me and said she was dragging other kpop groups when she didn't even name one specifically. Another example is eunchae of le sserafim, she debuted when was a kid and when people saw her body acne perfectly normal for a kid, they bullied her online. Idols need to protect themselves from us basically. And don't say its knetz that are just hateful we international fans have added onto the pressure cause we suddenly expect idols to be aware of political things they have no part of.

I agree i mean even before, the concept of being an idol (coming from japanese culture) is that you have to be consistently desired as pure or like innocent which is wack now since nobody even think that's genuine nor realistic. I'd still like them to be respectful but not act as like they're robots
@jk2000jk
@jk2000jk 7 месяцев назад
On the last part tho that pressure really should be on the management team, e.g stylists to know the significance of the clothes they're wearing because at the end of the day they had to look it up to get it. In terms of the chaeyoung incident however I would say she is accountable and not the management necessarily. Tbh if they want to enter a global market, they'll have to be aware of cultures they take their inspiration from in a way that won't offend them. It's not easy but it must be done

Jessi is so strong, definitely a fighter and survivor. She wasn’t accepted in SK when she debut because she didn’t fit the mold of what the public and media could accept as an idol. But she came back and fought for her spot in the industry. She wasn’t going to allow anyone to constantly tell her no. Really proud of her and what she has achieved as well as helping change some minds about strong women in the industry.
@ksmith8360
@ksmith8360 3 месяца назад
You can tell that her answer here had to be well calculated. She can answer that question in 10 seconds, but even she cannot let it all out. The answer is that fans hold all the power. If they don't like what you did or said as an idol, you're done with. Idols are an investment for a company. You screw it up, you screw up the company investment. You have a lot of people to answer to. The answer is obvious and Jessi knows it. I absolutely Love her BTW.

She debuted im 2005, things back then were crazier her company was shady, she couldn't fit in as fast as she can. Jessi left Korea twice because she gave up but in the end she come back because she couldnt let go of her dreams. Even when her debut as Jessica H.O did fairly well, it wasn't sustainable. Her era and the current era are really differrent. But the system might not have changed that much. Most idols debuted with debt, because company sees their investment as debt so if you debuted and things go well fast you can pay those and get paid, but there are cases where some need 2 - 3 years even longer to get paid. People clown on big companies idols but young people go there because the welfare systems are better, and in some cases they debut with no debt because the company didn't count the investment (dorm, clothes, food, allowances) as a money these trainees need to return. So if they leave, they didn't ask for it back. At least this is how YG operates.

Part of the issue is the Korean government, the older more conservative folks who make the laws are the ones who dictate what flies both on air and in the general media. They set the more formal tone for a lot of the things we see. One other aspect is the notion that promoting an idol = selling the full package. It's not just the music or merch, being a fan is something of a matter of pride when the idol also is seen as having good character. They're essentially becoming the product themselves, and this means that they must hold themselves to an untouchable standard to remain a competitive product. This is true in a lot of pop culture industries but South Korean pop culture, especially within kpop idols and actors, it's taken to another level.

Jessi is biting the hand who feeds her. She is popular because korean entertainment gave her a chance. Only thing now she is gonna get is more criticism from korean society. If she can't follow Korean culture why is she staying in Korea. She should go to America. She has always been American person and she will be never be a Korean woman. She is a shameless and bad person. And Korea will never change. Korea will become more conservative and greater. And Korean Government is doing the right thing. Korea will always be a country which has cultural, religious and human values.

It’s interesting, because pop as a genre of music is supposed to give you a break from the conservative world, into a world of passion and fantasy. I think that may be why there is so much tension in the k-pop industry. That and it’s just not as flush with cash as American pop music.

A fear of judgment and negativity from the public is an influence to why they can’t be themselves. It stems from how the kpop industry is strict and expects their idols to behave a certain way. Avoiding scandals/drama seems to be a priority so they end up being more reserved and careful, preventing them to be completely authentic in public.
@Fartsquad_
@Fartsquad_ 6 месяцев назад
But if you really think about it, it’s safer for them to have a boundary like that. Every single idol/influencer who has been too close and real with fans have regretted their decisions. A lot of the idols who used to do lives so frequently with fans have stopped out of their own wish. Pretty much all celebs and influencers in the west are getting praised for being “real” one second then brutally canceled the next.,.
@ascexmir

They want an image of what they think all South Koreans or asians are like, conservative, shy , cute and childlike. When the idols Finally get inspired by western artists enough to gain confidence, They get bashed. REMEMBER, it's not an idols job to babysit minors. It's not an idols job to make child friendly music so the kid can see less indecent things . It's the PARENTS job to MONITOR what their kids listen to and what their kids watch. @@lolmfs Totally agree the problem with alot of these koreaboos and kpop stan kids is their reality of the world outside of them is so narrow minded they base their views on certain countries based on kpop Asian dramas animes etc so anytime they talk about the image of kpop its always something stereotypipic these kids came along and started stanning kpop around the late 3rd and early 4th generation and thats the only era they focus on or even care about they fail to even do their research on previous generations to get a feel of what kpop was like before their faves came along in the game because if they did they would know that the shit their faves are doing now their elders did before them they walked so that the new generation can run the only difference is this new generation come from a different time where standing out is becoming a new norm the older generation just had to blend in the background which are the issues that are being addressed now and now 3rd generation idols are coming into a new era where they're getting older their mark has been made in the industry but their generation is becoming a thing in the past because there's new generations coming after them so their reinventing to be their authentic selves and growing up along with their OG fanbase in order to still be able to market so it bothers me to see them getting hate for standing out and being their trueselves and embracing their adulthood I'm in the same age group as alot of these idols you've listed so I get exactly how they feel being overly infantilized and policed for my personal life choices would annoy me to the core.

its all about image and money. you start out really young, and you're told to do all these things and in return they promise you money and fame. you're afraid to lose it all, so you follow the rules and be prim and proper so that you can become successful. and you also see how quickly fans can turn against you. female idols who start dating someone publicly actually lose fans, and therefore, money. you can be a lot of things, funny, silly, pretty, hardworking, nice, etc. But there are things you can't be, ugly, mean, promiscuous, etc. you either follow the rules, or dont play the game at all.

Jessi is just so real and open. She's never been afraid to express her true personality and style, which was obviously extremely different from someone who's supposed to be in the kpop scene. It really is amazing and so inspiring how she overcame those boundaries and harsh judgement to become what she is today. She was motivated to fulfill her dreams for over a decade, and the entire time she never let go of her true self. That's really remarkable to think about and she without doubt deserves more recognition and support for it. Realism is something that is never regulated in kpop, if there were more idols like this the industry as a whole would defiantly benefit.
@emsai3658
@emsai3658 6 месяцев назад
I kind of feel like something important to consider here is how the public perceives Jessi vs other Kpop artists. Something I hear Koreans say a lot is "foreigners are so open, they curse/say I love you/hug/kiss casually". So they don't have a problem with that behavior or judge it harshly for foreigners, but with Koreans and other East Asians they're a lot less accepting of that or similar kinds of openness. While Jessi is ostensibly a Korean artist I think people perceive her as being heavily influenced by western and hip hop culture so they take her casual personality as part of her branding and as expected behaviour, while for other artists, ESPECIALLY idols, they'll be judged according to more conservative standards that align with what they perceive as a purely Korean identity. Also, I know it wasn't always like that, she definitely faced a lot of obstacles but another part of being able to "be yourself" comes from having the respect of peers and so many years of experience under your belt. People just starting off in this industry can have their careers wiped from existence if public opinion and/or internal company stakeholders don't vibe with what they're doing.

The strong cultural expectations around image and proper presentation of oneself in Korea is what I think Jessi is talking about. The backlash can ruin the idols career in an instant if Idols were to be themselves. I mean since Jessi mentioned Lisa...just like how majority are not a fan of Lisa doing her "somewhat" nude show. She's getting hate, and brands are removing her I believe. It's that crazy. It's because she was first introduced as a Kpop Idol in the Korean Industry....in a group. Debuting in a Korean pop group already set it's tone for how the members should be like and act. She already has this innocent image (but with some swag) from the start, so her straying away from that image or just doing something a bit exotic gets people riled up. Whether it's good or bad. Even though she's old enough now to do what she wants. However, if Lisa were to debut as a solo artist (not in a group) with a sexy concept. People probably would not be bashing her right now, because it'll be something that she's known for and people are used to see her that way. I mean Kpop industry itself is already messed up from the start so changing those standards/rules/whatever it will be hard. Just like how everyone who debuts has to be "good-looking", and be "skinny". Beauty standard is crazy in Korea.

The brands are VERY supportive of Lisa and are NOT leaving her. She, on the other hand, is leaving YG. LOL

I think what she's trying to say is that they (other kpop idols) don't want to ruin their branding - the image they're trying to sell to their audience, their stage persona. Jessi has remained authentic to herself, possibly drawing on influences from Western culture, that she has crafted a brand where she can genuinely express her true self. She doesn't feel compelled to conform to the unrealistic societal pressures of always embodying the "aegyo" concept that others expect when the screen comes on. In simpler terms, she values authenticity and doesn't want to come across as insincere. This isn't to suggest that the aegyo style is unattractive or incorrect, as some individuals are just naturally so. However, I do believe that Jessi is helping redefine the standards in South Korea, opening up opportunities for people to express themselves in other ways that some might not yet be prepared to embrace which is saddening. Hwasa's also another great example too.

The thing is that Jessi isn’t a Kpop Idol, obviously still a major figure in the Kpop scene, but not an idol singer. Maybe when she started as a singer she had the idol experience, but when she came back for Unpretty Rap Star she completely rebranded her image not only as a rapper and singer, but also as a woman who’s fierce and not afraid of other people’s opinion aka what some people would consider an “imperfect image”. On the other hand, Kpop idols rely on their clean image because unfortunately their perfect reputation is what keeps their careers alive. You can go look at the graphs of Kpop companies decline when one of their groups get into a “scandal”, that’s how bad it is.

Think of it this way. Labels literally sign teenagers. The company always feel so big, they have all the power, they provide everything for them, they gave them a career...best not f*ck that up. When idols get older I think they realize their self worth and that's when you see artist start to push back a bit. But there always is the fear of the system. If you don't play ball with A, you can do something with B...etc. This is especially true for female artists, because like Jesse said, Korea is very conservative. I'm glad that a few standouts have shown the younger generation they can be and do more. Jessie, Hwasa, Soyeon to name a few. They've inspired groups like Purple Kiss, Le Sserafim, and Kiss of Life to be more active and vocal in their music production. So a change is happening, but it's a slow process.

It's a conversative country - in a lot of ways, this is a very beneficial societal model, for example families will be much more encouraged/expected to stay together which means less divorce rates - if too high, leads to a very weak society (something which is a huge problem in the west, and the west is becoming MUCH weaker because of it). We have an extremely selfish attitude here in the west, which will no doubt create a lot of problems in the future. On the flipside, there are clearly restrictions upon your behaviour as a result of being a conversative society, but these restrictions while often rigid, are often quite sensible and prevent people from doing stupid things. But yes, very different.

Kpop industries treats idols as products to be sold. As the name implies, they want to create an idol for people. In order to that, these idols need to follow certain rules, fill some standarts. They need to be perfect by society values. Most groups have a concept, have everythng set to the sucesses, they have schedules and activities. Kpop idols are employees. Most of them are exploited by employers(the company) Is very difficult to them to reach certain point where they are able to have freedom to create, product, make music they like. To tell the stories they want to tell. To realse music when and how they want. To really have control on their career choices and money! To call themselves artists and not employees. I hopr things area getting better, there are so many incredible artists, they deserve to be able shine! And this will just be possible being themselves

Imma give you the simple answer; if they try to be too much themselves in front of a camera, they risk being completely banned from the entertainment industry. They can't be completely themselves in social media either because their accounts are being monitored. Everyone who's been into kpop from 1st and 2nd gen knows how powerful some of the companies are, they can simply not allow their artists to interact with each other (see Jaechingu's episode with Dara and the one with Sooyoung). It is a fact that the industry has changed a lot since back then, and tbh a lot of artists are way more open now than before, but it's not that it is better, for companies like SM for example, it is very different still and they will never be allowed the freedom other artists have.

conservative is a range and mindset, not just about clothes. And they still get shamed. Also many idols seem to not like showing their bodies, but they're just put in the clothes. I've seen tons of idols show discomfort with their outfits.

My guess would be because it appeals to a wider western audience - but then outside of their attire and choreography, idols are still expected to maintain a certain 'image' (not just physically, mind you) that represents South Korea in a good way. I think you see this less and less the older they get, though.

in america there’s also not so many types of acceptable behavior and appearance for celebrities, it’s just different. most are open about things, loud and informal aka act like they’re talking to friends during interviews (which is also mostly because of the language structure, and language shapes how we think) but there are few who aren’t, and in korea it’s the other way around. the look and the style that jessi has is the most popular and the least original for a female artist in america. i don’t have anything bad to say about her, i actually really like her songs and enjoy listening to her speak sometimes, but she’s just a super typical american celebrity who happens to also be korean, and she doesn’t really have any great wisdom to offer as an explanation of why kpop artists are like that
@Harmonia96

Linguistics definitely is a huge factor in all this. We don't change very much about our dialogue around seniors, juniors, women, men, the way Koreans do. That shit is hard-coded in them. Now we're in the age where idols are debuting younger and younger, I feel this dynamic between idols and fans is SO uncannily similar to kids being forced to walk up to their aunts and uncles to hug and kiss them, you know? The implications are so disgusting. They're going into debt; selling their images, and in this economy, they're willing to go through any and all abuse for the sake of their family, who are none the wiser. The culture needs to change, and the parasocial loser stans need to get a grip on their own lives.

For me this "Perfect Persona" packaging of artists in Korea is a marketing strategy that targets this social phenomena that is happening in this country - that is for one to project purity, beauty, humility and excellence. This is the "ideal" type of person everyone is expected of in Korea to be successful. So they portray this archerype via idols/artists. But just like Jessi said, this does not happen in real life.
