I loved the workouts. It was the only way to get to my goal. Wish I could still run like that.

So Coach Pete can time when they start a rep. Arms dropped and starts running the rep (splitting his own stopwatch at the same time). Seen regularly in American groups (HS and college) from the lead runner, sometimes seems to be a habit/quirk that individuals pick up and stick to. Definitely helps if you try to time a group across the infield (e.g. 300m reps etc).
