Today we are talking the birth of Jesus in Matthew 1:18-25.
We're going to be talking about whether or not Mary was a virgin, what the prophecy from Isaiah actually means, and my hope is that by the end of this video, we will be a little closer in our relationship with God, and, like Joseph, would be those who are called righteous. Matthew 1:18 opens up like this: "Now, the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, took place in this way, when his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph. But before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit, her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly." Now, this is an invitation for us to explore what engagement looked like in the first century because it's very different for a young Jewish couple living in Israel during this timeframe than it is for many places across the world today, especially those of you that find yourself in a context like mine in America, where anyone gets to choose who they're with and how long the engagement lasts.
