Jesus Did Not Come to Abolish the Law and Prophets

Did Jesus come to make sure his followers continue to keep the Old Testament laws? How does he not “abolish” the Law but “fulfill” it? What is meant by a “jot and tittle” not passing from the Law? Are there “more important” and “less important” commands? What is implied by us being the “salt of the earth” and “light of the world”? These and other questions, Chad Bird will address in this week’s Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes on Matthew 5:13-20.

Got your book The Christ Key and looking forward to reading it. As a Lutheran (barely) there is much I can agree with about Lutheranism. Yet Luther, himself, had an appreciation for the early Church Fathers (what he was able to access of them) and Orthodoxy. But he didn't go far enough. If he had been willing to join the Eastern Church one can only imagine how the Reformation would have progressed. His fatal flaw, and that of all Protestantism, was his subjectivity in relation to the Church and Scriptures. A seed was planted that has fractured the body of Christ, barring divine intervention, beyond repair.

I was struck by your phrase explaining fulfill. Jesus came to "fill up" the law. He did that more then we can imagine or even discern. His fulfillment in our estimation is pressed down and overflowing. Forgive the Star Wars remark that is coming. The first time you said yota for iota, i heard Yoda. 😊 May God continue blessing you so that we may be blessed to learn from you. Amen

Could fulfill in verse 17 mean accomplish what is required, as in "You will get an 'A' in my class if you fulfill all of the requirements as set forth in the course description," so that Jesus achieved perfect righteousne under the law so that this righteousness which he accomplished, which was greater than that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, could be imputed to us through faith, which seems to be the only way in which we could be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect?

Hey, I enjoyed your video, but I do have a question about your comment on the view that "The Law and Prophets" = The Whole Old Testament. While I agree at times, it can mean that. However, wouldn't you say that the context of verse 19 seems to imply that he is specifically talking about the Decalog?

Often times we hear a teaching which taught our children to hate our parents to follow Jesus or to deny them. In fact I was told to always put Jesus above my parents in one of the earliest churches I went to. This turns our children against their parents. It is imperative to realize Jesus came to embrace a new covenant and was bringing humanity into a new age. However the parents of the children AT THAT TIME were old covenant minded. Jesus was not telling them to hate or deny their parents. He was telling them to move away from the old covenant mindset. It makes no sense to for Paul to tell us to honour our parents in the Lord and have Jesus tell you to go do the opposite.

Religious organization s must not misinterpret the bible and promote legalism which is a smart trick to circumvent the essence of the gospel of JESUS. Bottom line is if love your God and your neighbors you will have fullfiled the laws anyway. For eg if you love God, or respect God for who he then you will develop a personal relationship as a higher powerful being and live according ly in daily life.

For one, the scriptures weren’t given to Gentiles. Two, the context is him fulfilling the scriptures, meaning the prophecies concerning himself. Verse 19 begins a new thought with “whosoever therefore (or speaking of law) shall break one of THESE least commandments or teach men so shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven:” What commandments? Verse 20 - 7:29.

Those who are CALLED least, are those who are not in the Reign. Do you know the meaning of the name Paul? Paul means LEAST. People will be called Paulinians. You’re right on the fact that the law is not for gentiles (Goym = without covenant), because they have nothing to with the MH. If you want to enter the kingdom, better do the will of the Father: obey the laws, or you are going to be called least.

He fulfilled it. Those who are in Christ are no longer under law, Christ is the end of the law to all who believe, and the prophets testified of the savior to come. The only thing a sinner can do is believe on Christ as savior. That's it. Salvation is not in ourselves whatsoever. Someone who has "lost his salt" doesn't lose the born again nature. Someone who isn't living there position doesn't have to do with salvation. But rather service, rewards, and fellowship. Growing and maturity is our walk with the Lord, but salvation is only through faith in Christ. Also not all saved believers are disciples.

Luke 23:43 And Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in 🌺 Paradise. 🌺 This is a solemn promise.” [9:111] GOD has bought from the believers their lives and their money in exchange for 🌺 *Paradise.* 🌺 Thus, they fight in the cause of GOD, willing to kill and get killed. Such is His truthful pledge in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran-and who fulfills His pledge better than GOD? You shall rejoice in making such an exchange. This is the greatest triumph. AMEN... The Law is good... that it reveals sin... but thats all it can do... The law was added to prepare God's people of the coming Messiah.... when the full weight of sin and death is upon us... we seek a saviour and we turn to Christ... we see the cost... we see the full weight of his Grace... and it is this Grace that saves us from our sin... for it is the goodness of God that leads a man into repentance and into Trusting Christ... which ultimately leads to loving worship which GLORIFIES GOD and gives honour to his Name which the enemy of God HATES he hates God being praised... he wants us to be miserable and to curse God (for me, this is what brings the most suffering here on earth, the lack of worship to God, the lack of Praise, the lack of words speaking of His Glory of his Goodness. all the talk is of vain things... it can be so cold and lifeless... the world is void of hope... Man shall not leave by bread alone!) the enemy is very very cunning... even once saved and grafted into The Vine... his goal is to make you slip... to sin and feel ashamed and try to earn Gods grace again... to try to earn Gods favour by making amends... which will lead to frustration... and ultimately distance between you and God... the further away from Christ you are, you will wither... and once again God will not be receiving any thanksgiving... May our sin lead us not to despair but to the Throne of Grace where we SHALL be forgiven ALL our sins and find comfort in his presence we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.... if we Sin (God forbid) he will use it for our Good, to discipline and to reveal to us the exceeding riches of his grace towards us ^ God's grace to His people is continuous and is never exhausted. and it is HUMBLING Besides obviously Christ, another time that I have experienced such GRACE... was when I was on a drug comedown and my nephew & niece were over my house... they were climbing all over me while I was laying on the floor DEAD INSIDE... they wouldn't stop showering me with affection and love, even though I gave them nothing.. they just kept climbing all over me, they clung to me... they were relentless, eventually that day their love BROKE ME... I saw how beautiful they were, so innocent, kind and gracious towards me... an undeserving ugly selfish person who gave them nothing back... I ran to the bathroom, shut the door and wept out to God God has already given us His Word ... Jesus... who is the YES AND AMEN to all of his Promises IT MEANS GOD IS FOR YOU... NOT AGAINST YOU “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends." Don't let Sin separate you from God... and don't let the guilt of Sin separate you from God... LET NOTHING SEPERATE YOU FROM THE LOVE OF GOD... FOR NOTHING DOES! .... Just come to him, submit and let the potter be the potter... and you be the Clay. He will make all things new

No. Ribbanucal Judaism started after the temple was destroyed. That’s what happened because of the pharasys after the temple was destroyed. They believed in oral Torah. Also. If we’re under the entire mosaic law. Do you have a fence around your roof? Do you do do all of it? Also. If the whole ML is in effect what about what can’t be done like sacrifices? That’s fine away with? But that’s abolished. Can’t be. But it’s done. Only cause the temple was destroyed. Hebrews says otherwise. Going back to that was the whole point of Hebrews. Denying Christ and siding with the “judaizers” who who continued sacrificing. Well it’s only the sacrificial. Not ceremonial or moral. But the Bible never breaks them up. Organize maybe. But never fully separate laws. It’s a unit. That’s why this is a 2000 year old discussion.

Pleroo is the root. All but three of the verses you showed in your screen shot actually say plerothe which is the word used to indicate fulfilled prophecy. Matt 2:17 is eplerothe (same meaning) and Matt 3:15 and Matt 5:17 are plerosai. Aside from Matt 5:17, there are only 3 other times that plerosai is used Rom 15:13 May the God of hope fill (plerosai) you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Col 1:25 May the God of hope fill (plerosai) you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Matt 3:15: But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill (plerosai) all righteousness.” Then he consented. Now we see the real meaning: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fill them up with proper meaning/make them fully known/make them full.“ See now verse 17 no longer contradicts verses 18 & 19 So what were they missing regarding the Law and prophets? A true understanding. God's perfect Torah had been polluted with traditions of the elders and halacha and enforced by the teachers of the Law upon the common citizens. Yeshua challenged these misinterpretations every opportunity he got: Matt 15:1-2, Matt 15:3-9, Matt 23:23, John 5:8-11 etc. EVERY single teaching of Yeshua's was teachings and interpretations from the Torah, from divorce (only valid when there is sexual immorality - Deut 24:1), love your neighbor (Lev 19:18), love your enemy (Ex 23:5; Ex 23:4), stopping the lynch mob from stoning the adultress & the concept of eye for an eye (commands valid only in a court of law not comman citizens) and so many others. Yeshua's teachings were in perfect alignment with the Hebrew bible... Absolutely zero contradictions. That's great news for us because otherwise he would not qualify as God's anointed. The new covenant did not alter the Sinai covenant anymore than the Davidic covenant altered the Noahic covenant or any other of God's covenants for that matter. All covenants stand eternal. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. (Psalm 89:34)

Galatians 4:21-31 (KJV) 21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? 22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he [who was] of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman [was] by promise. 24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27 For it is written, Rejoice, [thou] barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. 28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. 29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, even so [it is] now. 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

@@Logic807 I see where you're coming from my friend but with all due respect, none of this can be understood on a verse by verse basis. It has to be understood as a whole. Not sure how much of this you’re willing to read but if not you then maybe someone else: 1. No covenant in the bible ever replaced a covenant before it. The Davidic covenant didn't replace the Sinai covenant nor did the Sinai covenant replace the Abrahamic covenant. Each new covenant expanded on the ones that came before. 2. The new covenant is not what you think: “Behold, the days are coming, declares HaShem, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares HaShem. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares HaShem: I will put my Torah WITHIN them, and I will write it ON THEIR HEARTS. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer. 31:31-33 And I will put my Spirit WITHIN you, and cause you to walk in my Chukim (ceremonial laws) and be careful to obey my Mishpatim (love-your-neighbor laws). Ezek. 36:27 So what's different about the new covenant? The spirit will no longer rest upon a select few people ( 1Sam. 16:13; Num. 11:17; Num. 11:26; Judg. 3:10; 2 Kings 2:9), it will be installed inside all those who believe. As Ezek 36 explains, this spirit placed within us is promised to cause us to have a desire to walk out HaShem's commandments. Not like the covenant before where the Israelites tried to walk it out in the flesh and failed. Yeshua reminds of this promise right before he ascends: And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 This covenant promise was fulfilled in Acts 2 on the 50th day after Yom Habikkurim which is on Sukkot. (Not coincidentally, they were assembled together in Jerusalem in holy convocation on Sukkot as required by Torah): And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4 And we see the fruit of that promise (as outlined my Ezekiel 36:27) described in Acts 21: And when they heard it, they glorified God. And they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed. They are all zealous for the law, Acts 21:20 3. If Paul taught Torah was abolished, then why did he continue to keep it? In the same verse above (Acts 21:20) we are told Paul still keeps Torah: Take these men and purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses, so that they may shave their heads. Thus all will know that there is nothing in what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also live in observance of the law. Paul tells us he kept both written and Oral Torah After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. Acts 28:17 He also wrote: Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 1 Tim. 1:8 The list of other examples is simply too long for a RU-vid reply. 4. In Matthew 5:17-18 Yeshua is clear that not even the tiniest detail will pass away until 2 conditions are met: a. All is fulfilled (ginomai) b. Heaven and earth pass away The final prophecy to be fulfilled is the final judgment prophesied in Psalm 96:13 Which is fulfilled in Rev 20:11-15. Immediately upon it being accomplished (ginomai), heaven and earth pass away (Rev 21:1). And in case any doubt remains that this is the point in time that Yeshua is referencing, God literally declares it himself: And he said to me, “It is done (ginomai)! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. Rev. 21:6 5. Torah continued being kept after the destruction of the first temple in Daniel's time so the temple being destroyed does not signify an abolishment of Torah. In fact, God is clear that he requires a return to Torah before we scattered Israelites (apart from temple service) are allowed to be gathered back to the landf And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where HaShem your God has driven you, and return to HaShem your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul, then HaShem your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where HaShem your God has scattered you. Deut. 30:1-3 In the kingdom: The temple will be rebuilt (Ezekiel 40-48) Levites will be restored (Jer. 33:15-18; Isaiah 66:20-23; Ezek. 45:17; Ezek. 43:19, etc.) Sacrifices will resume (Mal. 3:3-4; Is. 56:7 (yes, even gentiles); Zech. 14:16-21 etc. Torah will be law of the land (Ezek. 37:24) Gentiles will come to Zion to learn Torah (Is. 2:2-3) 6. Yeshua came only for covenant Israel: He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Matt. 15:24 Gentiles are invited to join covenant Israel in Isaiah 56 (another messianic prophecy). This needs to be read as a whole but here are a few excerpts: Thus says HaShem: “Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation (literally says my Yeshua) will come, and my righteousness be revealed. Is. 56:1 Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to HaShem say, “HaShem will surely separate me from his people (have you separated yourself from Israel?)”; and let not the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.” Is. 56:3 “And the foreigners who join themselves to HaShem, to minister to him, to love the name of HaShem, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant Is. 56:6 HaShem GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares, “I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered.” Is. 56:8 Enter Yeshua to proclaim himself as the fulfillment of that promise: I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and **they will listen to my voice** (obey). So there will be **one flock** (Israel), one shepherd (Messiah). John 10:16 Yeshua does not contradict himself by saying he only came for Israel then also saying he will gather others too. He is referencing Isaiah 56. The other sheep (gentiles) are expected to join through covenant to HaShem (become one flock) to inherit the promises made to Israel and Israel alone. Honorable mentions: Hashem foretold Yeshua’s purpose in another messianic prophecy: Bind up the testimony; seal the Torah among my disciples. Is. 8:16 In the same prophecy, Hashem warned of the heresy that would come: To the Torah and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no morning light (shacharit). Is. 8:20 Yeshua commanded the leper to perform a ceremonial law: And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” Matt. 8:4 Peter and John continued to pray Amidah over the evening sacrifices at the temple even after the new covenant promise was fulfilled: Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. Acts 3:1 We also see the gentile Cornelius praying Amidah another day at the time of evening sacrifices (presumably from his house). About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” Acts 10:3

First, the Sinai Covenant are for the Jews, not for Gentiles. Second Jesus fulfils it by obeying every command, thus receiving the blessing and not the curses for Israel. Israel continues to sin and thus receives the curses. Jesus describes his laws, which intensify the moral commands (10 words) . Thus if you hold to the 10 words/commandments on the outward manner, you have fall short. The law is in the life giving Spirirt, which is no law but love. Thus the shema will provide the most important commandment and fulfilled by loving your neighbour. God's standards are way higher or even infinitely higher than the 10 commandments. The rest are Jewish laws appropriate for them to be Holy, and many can not be fulfilled without the temple. But the real tabernacle is your heart where Christ Spirit lives .in Your hwart. Be led by the Spirit and not your man made ideas.

9 💔 31 They have set up their religious leaders and scholars as lords,* instead of GOD. Others deified the Messiah, son of Mary. They were all commanded to worship only one god. There is no god except He. Be He glorified, high above having any partners.

Summary: Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to abolish it later. Forget what Jesus said that we must obey even the least of the commandments because we cannot obey it all anyway. The pharisees that Jesus mentioned were those who reject the commandments of God and elevated the man-made commandments but here it is referring to Pharisees who keeps all the law? The simple human logic is very rarely displayed these days, why???

abolish and fulfill are as distinct as emptying a cup and filling it up so that it overflows. Things still changed the reason is simply different.

Under the old covenant: hear O Israel The Lord your God is one. Under the new: The Lord your God is one with you. Under the old: I will remember your sins up to the 3rd and 4th generation. Under the new: I will remember your sins no more. Under the old: thou shalt no use my name in vain. Under the new: Ask anything in my name. You must heal the sick and drive our demons in my name. Under the old: you must keep the sabbath and not do any work. Under the new: come to me all of you who are weary and heaven laden, I will rest you. Under the old: Honor your parents and you have long life. Under the new: We are children of the Most High and have everlasting life. Under the old: You shall not kill. Under the new: We have been given life and life abundantly. Under the old: Thou shall not commit adultery. Under the new: You are the bride of Christ. Under the old: Thou shall not steal. Under the new: Thou has been given all things to enjoy. Under the old: You shall not bear false witnesses. Under the new: The Spirit testifies that “I remember your sins no more!” Under the old: You must not covet your neighbor’s possession. Under the new: I have learn to be contended in all things. I can do all things in Christ Jesus. Who says we have a renewed covenant? We have a much better covenant!

The covenant has a new executive form. The covenant is the same. Read Ezequiel 31, where the renewed covenant is explained. If you do not do the will of the Father, the Messiah will not know you. So, Paul is a liar, when he says you can do everything in Krestos.. his sun deity. You must do the will of the Father, obey His laws. Faith without works is dead. You only obey if you have faith. So faith on what happened to Messiah does not save. That is not the gospel. The gospel is of works, Messiah said so. Faith by knowing 3 facts about messiah is Gnosticism.

The righteousness that exceeds the scribes and Pharisees is faith the very same faith which Abraham had for he believed God even as we should believe Jesus Christ the Messiah.

Not only that. The Pharisees made Takanot, that is law that contradicted the Law of God through Moses. If you want to be saved you have to not only believe that Yeshua is the mashiaj but also do as he did, fulfill the law of Moses

@@SDDPSJ fulfillment of the law of Moses is believing upon him who God sent namely Jesus the Christ whom Moses and the law pointed to, to come to Christ is to come to the end of the law be released from its bounds and created a new in the image and likeness of the Son of God.
