Amy-Jill Levine holds the B.A. from Smith College, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University, she has honorary doctorates from the University of Richmond, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, the University of South Carolina-Upstate, Drury University, Christian Theological Seminary, and Franklin College. A self-described Yankee Jewish feminist, Professor Levine is a member of Congregation Sherith Israel, an Orthodox Synagogue in Nashville, although she is often quite unorthodox. Professor Levine has held grants from the Mellon Foundation, NEH, and ACLS, and she has held office in the Society of Biblical Literature, Catholic Biblical Association, and Association for Jewish Studies. She served as Alexander Robertson Fellow (University of Glasgow), and the Catholic Biblical Association Scholar to the Philippines. In Spring 2019 she was the first Jew to teach New Testament at Rome’s Pontifical Biblical Institute. Currently, Amy-Jill Levine is a former University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt (Divinity and A&S); she is also Affiliated Professor at the Woolf Institute: Centre for Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge. Currently, she is the Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, Hartford International University for Religion and Peace.

Kudos! You asked her REALLY thoughtful tough questions on potentially explosive subjects, and it went exceedingly well, and an amazingly good interview emerged. It is very interesting to hear how a historical scholar coming from observant Orthodox Judaism might view these pivotal events in the first and second century given how much they've profoundly affected us all ever since.

The problem with what Amy says about visions of heaven and hell is that Paul describes in 2 cor 12 how he (a man he ince knew) came to have a vision of heaven. Moreover in 1 gal he describes that he did not go to Jerusalem or seek out any man. But instead he went to the Arava for 3 years, essentially the southern valley of the Dead Sea and points east. In 2 cor 12 Paul indicates he is saying things that he would get in trouble for saying, indication at some point he had contact with someone who was a mystic, possibly christian or someone who was certainly not mainstream Jewish. So, Angela Puca has a channel that discusses mystical magic and its influences. The notions that one hears, even magick that one does nit believe in, none the less influences ones mysticism. Thing of these droppings like the Tears of Tammuz in Ezekiel. The idea that Paul could not have "imagined" his Παράδεισον as part of en extended effort on his part to build up his original vision is shortsighted. And the way we can kind of validate this is that if Paul had only had one vision, he would not speak of his visions in the plural sense, adding to these over time. Moreover, had it only been the one vision he would have needed to resort to proof 'text' or oral sayings traditions as Q and Mark have done (Though Mark is clearly capable of just making 💩 up). In stead Paul continually avoids, and in fact, pushes back against the common themes of "the way of the light" and in does so by introducing new visionary material. This is exactly what he is doing in 2 cor 12, and so we have to accept what he is doing is his magickal imagination, through which the magickal imagery of his day is being filtered.

@46:27 I am not sure if christians believe in yahweh. They have claimed over and over that "jesus is God" and fullstop. If you don't call them out on that statement, then that is it. If you call them out then they would start mental gymnastics and pull out trinity. I even questioned some christians since God the son is called jesus, what is the name of God the father, and the reply was " the name of God the father is God". Quite a funny bunch.😂

Unfortunately for them (christianity) that blow turned round and bite them in the hiney. Now they want to be independent and seperate themselves from yahweh and judaism but they can't. @@kofiataLOL 😂 at your ignorance of the Two Powers in Heaven Israelite theology of the 2nd temple period the Biblical Judaism that Christianity came from and the Judaism that Rabbinic Judaism rejected in the 2nd century AD. Two persons of YHWH R both in Genesis 19:24. The trinity is what this Biblical Judaism is during Jesus Post Resurrection as. Thomas stated in John 20:28.directly to him ( Jesus). "The LORD of me and the GOD of me. " Thomas was one of Jesus Apostles but wanted evidence which Jesus provided.

Then violation of Lev. 18:22 would have been a good excuse to turn him over to Pilate to be crucified. See b. Baba Mesi'a 83b, re: Rabbi Eleazar ben Simon denouncing to the Romans a man for a crucifiable crime. The rabbi later found out at the man's torture-stake that he, together with his son, seduced a betrothed maiden on the Day of Atonement.

This is helping me. I’m digging deeply; praying for truth. I’m interested in what anyone may think about Christs 18 missing years not recorded by Luke; after all, he said he was going to thoroughly investigate everything. I would think that someone from Christ family knew where he was and what he was doing. He was most likely in India according to documentaries I’ve seen. I’ve heard about people writing books about their discovery of this.

Most reputable scholars will say the 'India' theory is nonsense and it is a fringe theory in academic scholarship. The possibility of what Jesus did between 12 and 30 is likely to be very boring- he grew up and he worked for a living- the same as every other male Jew at the time.

Paul said the Jews killed him to the Thessalonians and by the principalities and powers / archons of this age to the Corinthians. Never the Romans, unless Paul was implying by "archons of this age" that Jesus was crucified per order of Caesar and the Senate in Rome! The reason he was crucified? The only crimes for which the Romans crucified people were armed robbery, piracy, brigandage, other violent crimes, rebellion, insurrection, sedition, treason, desertion to the enemy, and other crimes against the state.

What your guest was implying that the _Romans_ rioted against the Jews because of the troubles the Christians were creating with their preaching. Can anyone out there help? Firstly I admire the work of AJ and she brings wisdom to the consideration of the person of Jesus. However AJ seems to take the same approach and draws essentially the same conclusion as the church regarding the entity Yahweh being the same God that Jesus points to. Jesus sums up his opinion of Yahweh well with his challenge concerning the care of children. Which among you would offer a hungry, thirsty child a rock and a snake to cater for their needs, Jesus is quoted as saying. No doubt AJ would advise this story must be interpreted in line with solid Rabbinical principles and arrive at a conclusion that differs from the clear meaning of the text. Simply put Jesus is repudiating the person of Yahweh and all his cruel, punitive, violent methods. If there are sections of the OT, Torah that speak of a Yahweh that is even faintly similar to the GOD of Jesus, then the clear message is: that OT writer is not referring to Yahweh. I'm sure AJ has an answer for Yahweh 's constant desire for the spoils of war in the form of gold, cattle and virgin girls. Sure Yahweh gives the soldiers and priests a fair share of the spoils also, but why in the first instance does he order people be dispossed of their land, murdered, their resources stolen and in some cases the complete destruction of all that breathes. I would so like to know how AJ takes this plain reading of the text and arrives at this being an accurate description of the GOD of Jesus. Does AJ cover this in any of her books? All her books I know of cover Jesus and the New Testament. I've now been 17 years puzzling on this and have not come across a single apologist that shows in any reasonable way that the God of the OT is the same GOD Jesus points us to. Thank in advance if anyone can assist.

She made a few mistakes: the historical Jesus did not consider himself a Messiah- the so-called Messianic problem (W.Wrede: Messianic Secret, AD ...1901) but only as Son of Man (from Daniel). Her understanding Christian Trinity is the same nonsense like also Christian Sunday preachers. God is acting in history as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (all are metaphorical titles; Son is not FAther according to plain logic (that was the argument of St.Anastassius contra Arius in AD 325; they are rational names and not individual or general, hence they have meaning only concerning each other and not individually,i.e. eternally as any logic or math formula. Her claim that NT is anti-Semitic is...biblical nonsense as since Moses killed his own Jews (EX 32:28), other pro[phets had revealed the wickedness of their own nation. Just a thought. Jesus was The Messiah but was not acting at that time as the Messiah. Sort of like an "Undercover Boss" who goes to work as a shift worker at Amazon to get the feel of the operation before he becomes the CEO. Dr. Levine seems an intelligent and engaging theorist, but I must challenge one of her points. If Paul was a Super Pharisee, He would not have a giant "P" on his costume. Paul would have "SP" on his chest. This of course instead of just an "S" in order to distinguish himself from Superman. Women just don't understand Superheroes.
