I think this is the basic setup everywhere in Scripture, which is why it's so important to interpret the Bible in a Christ-centered way. That particular story we are reading is our story but it's also his story - and that is crucial. If it's only our story, there is no real hope and we are left to try and avoid those failures we read about in our own strength. Yet that is often how we apply the text. But it's not how the Bible works. We must lift up Jesus before the people.

I'm glad to see a new episode of Masterpiece. The detail of the fire from the embers made me think of an Agatha Christie novel, or something like that. It's like revealing what happened the night of the murder through tiny, almost detective clues. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, in many ways Bible study is like detective work. The author has left clues in the text and if you discover them, understand how they are related and draw the right conclusions, you understand the message the author wanted to get across. Masterpiece is basically about making people aware of this and showing them how to do it.

@@MasterpieceBible It might be interesting to think about the symbolic meaning of a fire of coals. Why that and not, for instance, a fountain, or a tree?

@@MasterpieceBible Fire also appears in Exodus 3:2, when the bush burns, and it is just then that Yahweh says: "I am who I am..." And a bush that is not consumed, is it not like an ember, a coal? Also, those who go in search of Jesus to Gethsemane carry lighted torches, and the fire of a torch not consume the wood. Let us say then that the fire of coals is a symbol of Yahweh as a witness to all these scenes.
