In an argument about the historicity of Jesus, I tried to make this same point, at which point I was accused of goalpost shifting. I tried to explain, if you attempted to prove Spiderman was real, but he didn't sling webs, was never bit by a radioactive spider, wasn't named Peter, his gf wasn't Maryjane, etc. How is Spiderman still real if none of the attributes you associate with Spiderman are accurate? At what point is the statement falsifiable?
Irving Ceron To confirm historical rulers is easier. Their claims are more believable and do not require as much evidence. There's no real reason for people who wrote about them to lie. However. People lie for religion constantly and quite vigorously. So, it is much more plausible someone would lie to protect the faith. I deal with YEC all the time. Their beliefs are rooted in logical fallacies. To say my Spiderman analogy is a false equivallence is laughable. It shows you have a clear cognative bias if you think it's fallacious. Whether Spiderman is a moral figure is completely irrelevant to the point being made. If you think Jesus and everything in the bible is completely historical and 100% confirmed by unbiased historians you really have done no research on the topic at all, which is to say, you are the YEC of this scenario.
+Irving Ceron You cannot demonstrate that Jesus was not also purely fictitious. Some historians think he may have existed as a real person, but not be anything more than a schmuck with no miracles, which is closer to the first gospel and already proving Jesus of the bible pure fiction from a certain point of view. That does not mean the overwhelming majority of historians who think this to be true is in a similar proportion of the number of biologists who agree on evolution. For one, there is no plausible evidence for creationism. There is no plausible explanation of the evidence to fit a creationist point of view by any qualified biologist. There are several qualified historians with several plausible explanations for Jesus being only myth turned historical. This was very common of the time. If Jesus, a real person, existed, he would be the only one of this type of story to be based on a real person, which is used many times in stories around the region, most predating Jesus's time. Which means Spiderman explanation is completely legitimate. The only way it's fallacious is if you can prove Jesus of the bible 100% accurate, which you can't do. The fact that Spiderman is undisputed as fiction does not negate my point at all. The point was the attributes of a person is what makes the person. Real historical figures may have lies about them, but since no one thinks Rasputin can fly or whatever does not erase his actual accomplishments which he is actually known for. Now if Rasputin was famous for his flying, then I would say Rasputin did not exist either. A leader who did things may have existed, but a flying Rasputin is fictional. Furthermore, if there were historians who thought Rasputin were fictional and had evidence of flying Rasputin had rational explanations I would much sooner believe the rational explanation.
Irving Ceron False equivalence maybe, but what if there was a man that the character Jesus was based on? If he didn't say the things he was purported to say, didn't perform any miracles, didn't fit the description in the bible, wasn't born of a virgin birth, wasn't divine, wasn't born or died on the specified days, wasn't crucified, didn't rise from the dead, most the people who were purported to have known him didn't exist, Jesus/Yeshua wasn't his name (or he might as well have been named Fred), and more than 99% of the story was embellished, or exaggerated for dramatic effect or to fit prophecy -- then what? Might as well pick a Hebrew name out of a hat, and that would be the confirmed historical Jesus. Besides I prefer archaeology over history any day. At least a historian would have to be forced to concede to the evidence of archaeology (or lack of), and not just use the popular opinions of his/her peers.

@@johntiggleman4686 I always use that point when people try to claim that Jesus (Christ, the messiah, as he is in the bible) had to be true because otherwise he wouldn't have been willing to die for his point, nor others be willing to be killed for him. Many other Messiahs (who can't be true if Jesus was) also were willing to suffer death as were their followers for the belief that they were the Messiah. People supposedly saw them perform miracles too, which destroys the claim that the stories of Jesus have to be true because there were witnesses to his miracles and why would they lie.

@@skylinemusik1 Ok.... in the source material used for the current New Testament or to validate it, such as Josephus, there are many different people named Jesus aside from the main protagonist Jesus Christ that are mentioned, estimates in the 20s+ (Jesus son of Damneus, Yeshua (Jesus) bar Abba (Barabbas)) Yeshua bar Abba is especially problematic because Barabbas is the criminal that is released instead of Jesus during the crucifixion. The story of that event has many variants that name Barabbas as Jesus Barabbas (Yeshua bar Abba) so we have 2 people named Jesus being crucified at the same time, and some scholars believe the name of Jesus was removed from Barabbas out of reverence to the name because "The church father Origen said, "In the whole range of the scriptures we know that no one who is a sinner [is called] Jesus." Going even further, the Aramaic name Bar Abba means "son of the father." Very indicative of multiple people/stories being smashed together. The event of choosing between Jesus and Barabbas is symbolic of Yom Kippur where parts of the ceremony include 1 goat being chosen to be given to "the lord" and a 2nd goat being given to "Azazel" or is the "scapegoat") . During this time people usually had 1 name and no surname so they needed titles to differentiate them such as where they were from, who were their parents or relatives, were they baptized members of the church or not, etc etc furthering the problem. There are tons of videos and other resources from highly regarded scholars that can prove this for you.

I actually think it's a lot like the story of the Mormon church's beginnings used in Hitchens' book. Jesus and Christianity in general are both the remnants of a con job which eventually became more than it was meant to be. In the case of Jesus, he never existed as Christians think of him today. Whether or not there was a historical person named Jesus is irrelevant.
I tend to think that Jesus went east during his early adulthood, fell in and learned from some Buddhists and then returned to try to minister to people - while being very careful to couch his sermons and parables in the popular religious metaphor of the day. And the Romans that put this whole religion on the map a few centuries later missed that part.

Jesus Christ Glorified Zoroastranism also predicts the appearance of false prophets. Also Jesus did not fullfill the true mission of the Messiah, which is to reunite the jews, make Israel the greatest nations of all time and bring world peace which means that Jesus could not have been the Messiah
Jesus Christ Glorified Jesus Christ Glorified Well the prophecies of Daniel does not talk about the end of times, but about the persecution of the jews by the hand of Antochius IV,yet after his death, the Messiah did not come and judgement day did not happen. The writer of the prophecies in the book of Daniel(because there are two authors for this book, the 1st who wrote Daniel 1-Daniel 6 and the 2nd author Daniel 7-Daniel 12)was a jew who lived during the event of the persecution of the jews and thought that he was living in the end of times,so he wrote history in a symbolic way,and added them to the book of Daniel in order to make them sound prophetic. Now to come back to the real issue, the Messiah was said that he would be a king, will reunite the jews, and will lead many wars.Did Jesus did anything of that?No he didn't.So Jesus was not the Messiah the old testament talks about.
Jesus Christ Glorified Dude as I told you,yes Daniel does talk about judgement day,but the events that Daniel already happened(the massacre of the jews during the reign of Antochius IV),yet there was no judgenent day and ressurection of the dead at the end of this event like Daniel said. Now about the Messiah, read Isaiah 11:11-12 andJeremiah 23:8; where it says that he will bring back the jews to Israel, read Micah 5 where it says that the Messiah will be born in Betlehem and he shall deliver the jews from the Assyrians. If this passage was talking about Jesus, then Jesus should have besn born in Betlehem, but also fight the Assyrians which he didn't do because the Assyrians were long gone when Jesus was born, meaning that this passage does not talk about Jesus in any way which makes Jesus not the Messiah of the old testament.
Jesus Christ Glorified You re comment was supposed to try refute my argument, yet what did you do?You just started complaining because you don't want to aknowledge the truth. And yes,I did mention verses to prove my point,,so what are you going to do?Ignore these verses?Yes you will, because your belief has turned you blind.
In every culture there are similarities in their mythology. Doesn't make it true, plagerism has been around a long time. If only they had the presence of mind to film it on their cell phone we wouldn't have this problem
Even if there was one person, the cult was named after, his name was not Jesus Christ. Jesus is a Latin name, most likely the Latinization of Joshua or Jeshua. And Christ is not part of the Name, but a title, derived from Greek "christos", meaning "anointed". That nowhere in the New Testament the realistic name was used, should give an idea, how much of the content is fictionalized.

In a conversation with my mother I asked her once whether she thinks Jesus was real. Not just "some schmock" named Jesus of Nazareth who got cruzified by the Romans, no but the Jesus who did actual Jesus things and said actual Jesus stuff, so that "glorified" person. She said that, even if he did not exist, she'd still believe in Christianity, because even if fictional, Jesus was such a very wise man, wiser than anyone else, that he's the equivalent of being the real Son of God. It's no coincidence that the first writings about Jesus didn't appear until after 70 CE - he was invented to serve as a theological replacement for the sacrifices which had been performed at the Temple, but could no longer be performed after the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.
Absolutely brilliant. Finally, someone who is intelligent enough to tell it like it really is. Thank you AronRa. By the way, this is the first I've ever heard of you and I see some binge-watching for me in the not-so-distant future.
Hey man, if you are really interested in the history of Jesus or textual criticism, please look elsewhere, there are some great scholars who talk about this stuff alot. Some good places to start would be Dr. William Mounce, Dr. Mark Strauss, Dr. Darrell Brock, Dr. Daniel Wallace.

According to the New Testament: Jesus was a wandering, delusional Jewish preacher who criticized the authorities, orchestrated his own crucifixion and blamed it on me.
And by the way. Almost every culture on earth has recorded proof of a flood or deluge if you will. I very highly doubt they were all making it up. What it narrows down to is that this channel is race bait targeting Jews. This man isn't atheist. He is anti-Semitic.
You all are missing the point, he says that Jesus in reality was a genius who tricked the masses into worshipping him. Lmao lots of cultures have flood myths especially in the Fertile Crescent. Sometimes called monsoon season, like “lightning was caused by Zeus” same shit. Also if there was a flood that killed everyone but those on Noah’s ark, there should be just the Christian religion but alas it’s the youngest of the modern religions. Ironic actually. Here's an example where we know who is the real person behind the tale: Santa Clause. Of course, when you look at bishop Nicholas of Myra, there is actually very little he has in common with Santa Clause. That's what happens when you build a myth from an earlier myth based on an even earlier myth based on a real person - the fictional elements replace the factual elements. (And I am not even certain how well the story of the bishop corresponds to what he actually did in the first place.)
+Kai Henningsen The idea that Santa Claus is somehow derived from Nicholas of Myra and then just had stuff added onto it is just ridiculous. The myth has so much of Norse mythology in it that you'd get a better explanation if you just leave that character out entirely.
@@Gnomefro that's just your (unjust) opinion. Though some similarities exist, iconographically it's a well studied genealogy from the guy of myra/demre.
Imagination doesn’t claim to have designed perfectly balanced universe. God does. God says he wrote the Bible through insipiration of many very different men. Did they all continue the same imagination in complete perfection. I don’t think so. I don’t take advice from dead people anyways. If they knew all there was to know about the universe and why people do things they would probably figured out immortality before they died. BUT THE FUNNY THING IS LMAO IS THEY NEVER BELIEVE IN IMMORTALITY ITSELF. Haha how are you supposed figure out immortality if you your sole purpose was to spend your all your study’s disproving God. Silly atheists, they don’t realize they are just as sick as every other selfish person in the world and they will die trying to convince themselves.
@@destinationjesuschrist7043 If atheists are sick and selfish, then what are christians? Who started wars in the name of God, who tell people to burn for all eternity, who feel offended by people who just want to make them think. No Atheist has done any of these things, in the name of atheism. If your argument would be: BUT IT WAS THE CHURCH! Then you havent understood the impact, which religion can have on the world.
jokerss jokess I was arrogant in my response, it was ill written. “If atheist are sick and selfish” If you read my the end of my message correctly you would come to understanding that when I said atheist are just as sick and selfish as anyone else. It meant Christians and other humans alike. I didn’t put Christians in there own ring of perfection. Don’t put words in my mouth. Read it again you will see I never claimed Christian as perfect. Atheist don’t have to kill people in the name of atheism to be ruthless murderers, Joseph Stalin killed 60 million. Now let me let you in on a secret. The religious warfare of Christianity came from the ROMAN CATHOLICS. They worship the Virgin Mary over Jesus Christ. They are not Christians and they only consider themselves Christian yet they follow no doctrine of Jesus Christ. That’s why Protestant churches exclude Catholics from being considered Christians. They don’t worship Jesus of Nazareth that was beaten, tortured and flogged by the Caiphus of the Pharisees and Roman leader Pontius Pilate. Then Jesus was crucified for his claim to be God and his power to save mankind from the Sin that each human has in there heart and being. The selfishness and wickedness each person posses that we deserve to die for. So he promised his resurrection was insurance that we would be resurrected as well if we believe on him because he was God in the flesh and lived a sinless life. So after he died they laid him in a rich mans tomb and which fulfilled prophecy written one thousand years earlier and on third day he rose from the Dead and was witnessed by many. 4 Of Jesus disciples had accounts written of what they witnessed which was translated on Greek manuscripts. So we have 4 different accounts of the same story to compare side by side. The book of the Bible is composed of Greek manuscripts from pre 100 A.D writing in century of the life of Jesus Christ Our Lord and Saviour. You Forget that Men Create Wars over Negligence not God. Leave God out of mans evil doing or wrath will come upon you swiftly. You may choose to accept God or Reject him. That is your free will. He will not force you to love him, just like you can’t force a woman to love you. Love can only be freely given.
There's an interesting comparison to make with King Arthur too - until the 1980s historians believed that he was in fact a historical figure that had been romanticised over the centuries, he and things he was supposedly involved with appears in a number of independent written works and folktales, however there's not a shred of actual evidence to corroborate any of it and we know that one of the primary sources for Arthurian legend (Geoffery of Monmouth) was full of shit. It seems to me that the historicity of Arthur and Jesus have a similar weight of evidence, however both the miracle-performing Jesus of the Bible and the legendary Arthur have one thing in common: both could have existed as actual people, but in order for them to have existed as portreyed in stories about them you must believe in magic.
Aron, I am amazed at how relentless you are at proving that Jesus is just a myth! I would have lost my patience a long time ago. But the world needs people like you because there are still too many that didn't get it yet! ciao!

I have just discovered this gentleman on RU-vid. His arguments and his points are not only very interesting but also very persuasive. Until around 15 years ago I was a very staunch, practicing Catholic. But lost interest and all faith in religion when I began to question everything about Christianity and found it very lacking in truth.
that's the problem my friend you followed religion and not a relationship with your creator. no religion can save you. religions are poisonous to the soul. but to seek and have a relationship with Yahweh is the most wonderful thing to ever experience. I hope you find truth and stop listening to phonies like this guy. what he claims goes against all historical non biblical evidence on Yeshua.
Your understanding, lack of comprehension, made you loose faith in yourself, lost strength / the thirst of doing your biblical research ; therefore, don't blame anyone else, but yourself. Anyway!, you are the one who's going to end up in hell; meaning, it will not affect me, at all. Peace!.
Luis Diaz How do you know this person “followed” religion in favor of a supposed relationship with a supposed god? Also- Aron’s video certainly contains sone errors and misconceptions, but is not incorrect for the majority of statements it makes, and in fact it does go along with archaeological finds. Read the Ugaritic texts, for example.
Juan Torres Claiming an atheist who has reasoned that there is no god simply has flawed logic or is mentally lacking at all is no better than claiming Christians insist on believing in a god for the same reasons.
@@ILoveBonbons1 actually how I know is because he said it in his statement Hannah he was a staunch practicing catholic and lost faith in all religion. I also lost faith in religion but not in my creator God. Thats the issue of many so called Christians they put there faith in their religion or philosophy and completely forget what scripture says that God is not a religion is a relationship . @@texasranger6490 To which they may posit another reason why they fell. The ignorance doesn't even end with the witnessing of death itself. That's kind of the whole catch with organized religion. They create intentional reverse loop-holes within their logic that they can always fall back on, no matter the strength of your refutation. They can even word things in such a way that they can still deny suggesting something you directly quote from them. There is no logic we know of to ensure someone like that will be willing to intellectually grow.
While I doubt there was a singular Jesus, and Josephus mentions something like 13 guys with names in the same vein, I think there was a base man. The gospels worked very hard to force the story to fit the supposed prophesies. If he were completely made up, the myths would have aligned more readily.
@@klondike444 No, the whole thing is a myth, but the idea there was a model (like Gilgamesh- who has more sources than any Jesus) seems to fit with how hard they tried to take someone who didn't fully fit the prophecies and try to force his story to fit. Obviously, combining multiple characters- fictional and real- into one might also account. I just mildly see Hitchens viewpoint as opposed to a complete fabrication. Other than the falsehoods of all the stories, we'll never know if there was a base model or not.
My English teacher always told us that the English told stories and tales of glory at mead halls and after battles or to entertain lords. Beowulf and LeMor to de Arthur being one of them. A story meant to inspire. We broke it down into basic story telling categories from the time it was written.
Whether Jesus was a real historical figure, a chimera of a dozen self proclaimed messiahs, a complete fabrication or a combination of these doesn't matter any more. Believers will believe regardless.
+Deep Ashtray and atheist will reject any evidnece for miracles regadles how strong the evidence is......People like ARONRA are no different from Kent Hovind, they both admit that no amount of evidence will ever change their view, they hate people with different views, and both claim to be 100% sure that there view is correct.
Deep Ashtray any event that can´t occure according to scientific laws. for example resurecting from the dead or walking on wáter would be miracles because according to science these events can´t happen,
Deep Ashtray Well obviously by definition the origin of a miracle has to be supernatural. But you are moving away from my main point. My point is that extreme atheist like Aronra would never conclude that a miracle took place regardless of the evidence in the same way extreme Christians will never conclude that the bible is wrong, even if strong evidence against the bible is presented to them. Do you grant my point yes or no?
I tried to jokingly mock Hispanics in front of a Hispanic mentioning they shouldn't be using such a sacred name as Jesus but he corrected me and said that it was altered, not exactly the same, more of a symbolic homage In real Spanish Jesus has an accent over the u, as a name for people other than Jesus, except to say perhaps that's how they also spell and say Jesus Christ... Not sure as maybe I was getting an explanation from a Spanish speaker that gave precedence to English... So there is this: Jesus Christ: PROPER NOUN 1. (name) a. I have always wondered about the names the Bible gives us for the disciples of Jesus. Simon Peter, James (the Elder), James (the Younger), John, Jude (Thaddeus), Matthew (Levi), Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew (Nathanial), Andrew, Simon, and finally Judas. These names are now, for the most part, basically prominent Anglicized names, seemingly. These people lived in the Middle East where names and the tradition of family names have existed with honor for thousands of years. Why is it that even today, there are virtually no people from the Middle East, Arab or Jewish, Muslim or even Christian, that have such names. Even in the Bible itself, until the New Testament, such Anglicized names did not exist. Since the Bible was written by people with agendas, and has been rewritten and edited for special purposes time and time again, how can anyone use this as nothing more than a collection of fictional moral stories equivalent to those of Aesop's Fables?
+Tawnku Imi-Uru The names are the way they are because it's literature - not history. The Gospels of the New Testament were written originally in Koine Greek. They were not eyewitness accounts. It is possible that they were commissioned by ruling elites serving the Roman State and written as a sort of propaganda story primarily for a domestic audience in and around Rome and only in certain Roman provinces and cities. - impacting outside of these centers to less of a degree than currently assumed (at least in the earlier years (pre-400 AD). Or maybe they were more like the Charles Dickens novels of their time. But then things got out of hand. People use this book in all sorts of very horrible ways. It's a very pesky form of black magick because it presents itself as good and beneficial, but really isn't.
+Tawnku Imi-Uru It does get interesting though if one starts looking at the Gospels as Astro-Theology. Jesus as Sun or 13th (hidden) Sign of the Zodiac (possibly Ophiuchus) and the 12 disciples as the 12 signs of the Zodiac. See DaVinci's Last Supper and Zodiac. Revelation has a very striking Astro-Theological sub-text. It's all syncretism really. Beg, borrow, steal from the Vedas, Egyptian Lore, Sumerian Lore, etc.
+Tawnku Imi-Uru Yes! I have many beliefs about God. My goto is: God is Everything and Every Non-Thing Imaginable and /or Unimaginable. ( I think this puts me in a position wherein I don't place any demands on anyone.) I recognize that I am a limited and bounded creature so I attempt to be sincere in what I can and do know and humble in the face of what I don't or can't know. But I do have a sense that there is something very impressive "out there" that makes existence possible. And if this is the case, then a stance of personal gratitude and complete awe is the most natural emotional state that I can connect to the idea. In terms of theology, what I reject most strongly are the Abrahamic religious traditions that seek to prescribe strict behaviors on people, often through dishonest methods and empty rituals.
Does anyone have a link to Aaron's original blog post? The link in the description doesn't go there and I want to know the specific sources (e.g. gospels etc.) that he's referring to.
one question has never been answered for me, what about Joseph? He gets mention once or twice in the bible, but just think about human nature and how men and women really react. Mary gets knocked up but by who? Mary claims it was the holy ghost, or god's doing, and yet no mention from old Joe feelings. Did Joseph question Mary on how it happened, and we are led to believe Joseph went along with it...would any guy with half a brain go along with this tail? If this were to happen today, we got the makings of a great Jerry Springer show.."My Wife Had an Affair with God"
Joseph and Mary probly had sex before marriage, and pregnancy before marriage was considered enough to call in doubt the parentage of the baby. The whole virgin birth thing was later made up to cover for the baby, so he seemed more perfect and unusual But the likely real story is actually important for his life to see how he would have been shunned by the community; and how he learned to empathize with the downtrodden.
Hi Markus, Joseph was perturbed when he learned of Mary's pregnancy because he wasn't responsible, which could only mean she cheated on him, which was considered adultery punishable by death.
The fun fact is, King Arthur's tale bares so many parallels to the Jesus story that many speculate whether King Arthur is based off the common format that transcends throughout multiple theologies: • 1 King/Savior/Diety • 12 Disciples or followers • Brings about enlightenment However, on theology, it has even more parallels: • Resurrection • Immaculate Conception • Crucifixion And many more. I know he covers that with theology, but King Arthur's legend also seems to be a story that bares much likeness to these various "saviors" within mythology.
Consider Vercingetorix. something similar happend there. image how it would have impacted the gaulish people when their champion was slain. same formula different people.
Another fun fact: English King Henry VII's eldest son Arthur was Henry's heir apparent, but the future King Arthur died in 1502 at the age of 15 and his younger brother, Henry, became King Henry VIII in 1509.
+AronRa There is no clear consensus. However, Marcan priority is the dominant view. I think it is reasonable to say though that there is not enough evidence to determine conclusively which of the synoptic gospels was written first. The only thing we can say with confidence is that John was written last.
AntiCitizenX I had learned Marcan priority in school, but Wikipedia says that Matthean and even Lucan priority are argued by a significant minority of scholars. And of course how Acts fits into the puzzle is another question. It's all very complicated, especially because there is effectively zero external evidence to go on.
+EebstertheGreat Luke is a proto-Catholic gospel which is just an extended redaction of Marcion's "Gospel of the Lord". Given who Luke is addressed to, likely composition is around 170CE-180CE. Mark and Matthew makes references to the Bar Khoba Revolt in his "little apocalypse" referencing Hadrian erecting a temple to Jupiter on the Temple Mount, hence 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong" Of course referencing Daniel, who was making mention of the statue of Zeus in the Jewish Temple. That puts all modern synoptics in the second centaury. There does seem to be many hints there was a late first centaury synoptic gospel. However it either no longer exists or we have yet to find it. If any gospel was written in the first centaury, it was John, which still are littered with the fingerprints of Gnosticism.
Gotta love seeing Ole Irving Finkle. Loved his book The Flood Before Noah. I used to be a security officer and when he explained how they found Ur games carved into the wall side of statues feet that would have been at important doors and had guards posted at them. @Kenneth Liburd The Christian Hell was a creation after Jesus's death. In the earlier Hebrew telling, Jesus didn't mention Hell, he was talking about separation from his Father and possible destruction of your very being. The parable we see with the man in Hell asking for a drop of water was added in later. Closest to Hell the Hebrews had was Sheol which is the Grave and non-existence originally and then it morphed to be the trash fire outside the walls which was used to represent the destruction you faced if you were unrepentant, not torture, obliteration.
