He got his respect in the Western Hemisphere, so wouldn't say that. He's been my personal favorite for so many years, although, JCVD was my first one I became a fan of. Donnie Yen is the one who's underrated to me.
I love how Jackie Chan has been able to break the type casting by bringing comedy to the audience and looping his talents to not mimic Bruce Lee when he was more popular. That was brilliant! Such longevity in his career!
Bruce Lee was waaaay ahead of his time. He’s a movie icon because his performance was so much deeper than fighting. His knowledge and wisdom from his personal life just added to his legend.
Bruce Lee did seem to me to be a person that gave everything, even if the movie story and the scenery was stereotypical or simple his part made those shortcomings marginal.
“…totally opposite to Bruce Lee.” Fascinating. Where Bruce was fierce and in control and deadly serious, Jackie created his own on-screen persona that felt the blows and fought with humour and slapstick. Great contrast in styles.
Bruce Lee took different martial arts styles and blended together the best elements of them to create Jeet Kune Do. Ironically many of the martial artists they taught him their various styles became his students in Jeet Kune Do.
I always described the old Jackie Chan films and fights as "winning by accident", where he wasn't one step ahead of the opponent, or two steps ahead, he wasn't even half a step ahead, he was barely keeping up and his secret weapon was luck. It was very unique, and so expertly executed, it felt like magic how each sequence tied into each other like falling backwards into a victory.
Jackie Chan is so humble, his movies are amazing and remind me of buster keaton or charlie chaplin. He is in a league of his own in modern cinema. Not to take away from Bruce lee who was a pioneer and is an icon in his own right. But even the best Bruce lee movies never made me wonder _how did they film that?_ And with Jackie Chan I've been amazed more times than I can count. Absolutely phenomenal movie star. His movies will always entertain and amaze. Timeless pieces one after another. I love Jackie Chan. (Edit) to put it another way, when I think of bruce lee I think of sylvester stallone, arnold swarzenegger, wesly snipes. All amazing actors with amazing films, but again not as spectacular as: Jackie Chan, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Tom Cruise. When it comes to action movies performers who can do their own stunts just speak more to the imagination. They make me want to go to the cinema. Where as action stars i'm okay with seeing them at home.
Even with a low understanding of English, he still shows perfect understanding of cultural differences, movie esthetics, how dangerous sycophants can be and how to embody the essence of what Bruce did while staying true to himself His legacy survived due to Jet, Jackie and Donnie
Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco and go to Catholic school in Hong Kong and also went to the University in the U.S. I would say his English is excellent.
Honestly I feel like we have been lucky to be around to witness this era while these legends were making films. While my parents grew up to witness the phenomenon that was Bruce Lee, we had these guys. Rest in peace Bruce Lee, you kicked off an era that made it possible for these guys to succeed 🙏
Everyone's pain talking about Bruce's death especially Jackie. My respect & admiration for Jackie has reached another level after watching this, Thanks 😢.
Donnie Yen is a BEAST! Also, thank you so much for this video. I thought you were stalling in the beginning like 90% youtubers do, but you were actually speaking out of passion. Thank you, truly
He did a movie in y'all continent, too, called Mr Nice Guy, which is one of his personal best, before his major breakthrough in America with Rush Hour.
It’s amazing. I see so many people talking about Jackie Chan. Is anyone going to talk about how phenomena and how real Danny yen is the way he was talking about the spirit that Bruce Lee brought to the movie set was absolutely on point. You can’t just be a good actor and throw a couple of good punches and kicks here and there you have to be good at fighting and you have to capture the spirit of martial arts, including the when Chen karate
Jackie chan did want he did because he was a fan of Bruce Lee. Jet li did what he did because he was a fan of Jackie Chan. It always comes back to bruce lee.
Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris were old enough to remember Bruce. They were in his films. Jet Li and Donnie Yen were too young when Bruce was in his prime. Jet and Donnie were only 10 years old at that time.
@@vincentsantos6274 with JL being national champion from 1975-1979, i'm pretty sure he know about BL, and knew and seen a lot, maybe outside meeting him in real life
This video was awesome to watch! Anyone else out there, probably 40 years of age or older in the US, remember samurai Sunday? We would go to church in the morning, and come home and binge martial arts movies until they stopped playing them that day. That started my obsession with martial arts movies, and it continues to this day
What an intelligent, attractive man. I always loved Jackie Chan and still do. Very thankful for his humorous entertaing movies with all the fantastic stunts. So much intelligence and talent, and he seems so kind.
I ultimately think that there is a lot of aura and myth surrounding Lee. He was the 1st, but I'm not so sure he's the best anymore. Jackie is an amazing martial artist, extremely talented, and has an insane body of work. Unfortunately we'll never know what Lee would have ended up accomplishing...
@@johncook9392 they're all great in their own right. Bruce was the father of martial arts to the mainstream western media allowing those after him to flourish.
This proves the power and influence Bruce Lee had on martial arts and cinema! Some fifty years after his death we are still seriously talking about him!!
I just like had to learn Bruce's candle technique...so I mastered it aswel with both hands after practicing shadow fighting 😆 nobody can defeat thier shadow
Just came across this, thank you so much for posting. I really appreciate Jackie Chan's honesty, candidness, and confidence. Also he has encouraged me to communicate in a country where the language is not my mother tongue. Love his respect and admiration for Bruce Lee and how he stood his ground in not mimicking Bruce Lee.
When viewing many action stars, you see a man. A skilled man, but a man none the less. When viewing Bruce Lee, however, you instictively know you are witnessing something more... You catch a glimpse of the dragon that resides within.
First time I saw Jet Li, I was thinking holy sh*t who is this guy. He is amazing to watch. Bruce Lee will always be the standard but these other guys are fascinating too.
donnie yen is my favourite martial arts movie star today. scott atkins is also very good but i find him more predictable. donnie like he said does indeed bring a bigger depth to his charactorization i believe.
@@RansomeDavis I think it was like 8 of them, too, which is why he was the perfect pick to play Grandmaster Yip Man, who is Bruce Lee's mentor. Besides, he spent a lot of time in Boston, which is a rough city, starting at age 11, other than being in his native land of China, so he's about it fr
I'm a 42 year old American and grew up in California but the first movie my mom ever bought me on VHS was Wheels on Meals. I remember being so excited when Rumble In The Bronx was released in US theaters. Jackie Chan is wonderful.
Just look at how excited Jackie is when talking about Bruce, that's how great Bruce Lee was. He was a larger than life figure, supremely gifted, affable and charismatic. 1 of 1.
great find. the one interesting thing i think most people won't even notice is the last few minutes of Jackie's interview about the difference between action movies in the US and Asia was spot on foresight of what western "action" movies ultimately became. go back to 80's and 90's action movies and watch how long a fight sequence is compared to a modern movie whether live action or full cgi, etc.
I know these voices anywhere. Regardless of language. Honestly, these fellas are the main reason I got into foreign films as a kid. Lee, Li, Chan, and later on, Yen. It didn't really matter that I didn't know the language. The movies were still dope! Then after I could keep up with the subtitles, it made sooo much better!
Jackie is really a genius. When everyone wanted to be Bruce Lee he created his own identity and everyone loved it. I love his movies. They're too light and too funny, but they're also action packed.
Donnie is another great martial artist, whose movies I love. He always looks the part he is playing. And, true enough, he looked scary even in the one he was a villain - Shanghai Knights.
That is so funny to hear him say then. Idk when this was filmed but by the time that I grew up (in the mid 90s), Jackie Chan movies were already very well established in the family market. 20:14

Don't forget he was a professional dancer, your witnessing rhythm or soul in his performance.
That's why Bruce Lee was so eloquent in the English language, too, since he spent a lot of time in the states of both Washington and California, after turning 18 and getting sent back to the states by his parents
@@TylerHingleton I always say, his scene with Tyson is the closest we can get to the Tyson vs Bruce Lee comparisons. Also, I live in the Bay, and they’re tryina name a street after him here in Oakland.
@@pastense Long overdue, since the 50th year of his death has past just last year, which is crazy. Yeah, Mike also has great admiration for Bruce, and knows that man had no fear of any kind of opponent, outside of filming. Although, Bruce had the humility to admit someone like Muhammad Ali, who he was a fan of, could beat him in a fight, but still would be up for the challenge in a hypothetical matchup during one of his interviews lol
Jet Li, Jackie and Donnie, individually, will always be up there alongside Bruce Lee. In my youth they were the epitome of the archetypal hero I wanted and we all wanted to be. They all brought their own unique style to each film they made and whilst Bruce Lee was the godfather of martial arts films, they should all be up there alongside. Now, can we have a film with them all in? (Ai Bruce?)
I love all the differences between these actors. It's more fascinating than trying to copy the others moves, it makes them more interesting to watch❤ i'm more Jackie's fan bc i grew up with his movies but i love all the old kung-fu movies and actors❤
If you really listen to Jackie Chan, that man REALLY knows what he is doing. He really just took “The Nutty Professor” and added in some Kung-fu, and created a whole Genre which he dominated. Jackie Chan movies are some great comedy. I was in my teens when Bruce Lee movies were in the theater, what always amazed me, as this video states, was just how FAST he moved. Today if you watch it, it looks like CGI, but CGI was not around when these movies were being made, THAT'S HOW FAST he looked on screen, it looked FAKED, but it just couldn't be faked.
this when global market for movies as an actor was huge, not to take away. it was huge as times was different. same reasond both bruce Lee and Jackie chan legends. modernation(not a word) modern changes is a factor here.
Thanks a lot for this video. About why Jackie Chan started doing the opposite of Bruce Lee, and innovated more than others: “Absorb what is useful. Discard what is not. Add what is uniquely your own.”
Bruce is and always will be considered one of the best Martial artists arounds... Hands down honestly..... He was great in his way... strong as hell, fast as I don.´t know who... but,,,, alot of weekness amongst the stong parts....any Martial artist gets this :)
Whoever the actor/ stuntman who has the honor of doing a Jackie Chan movie has incredible shoes to fill. Jackie changed the stuntman culture and changed action forever as we know it.
