Ian is never going to go down in history's pantheon of great singers but his vocals worked so well for this band. I'm not a huge fan of theatrics in music. So many lesser talents have hid behind them. Ian does not hide however. He's brilliant theatrically and makes it work with his vocal style. He's an absolute musical genius when it comes to writing, putting a band together and keeping the group focused on what they should, putting out good music on record and stage. Kept himself perpetually clean by never getting into the drugs (there have been a few notable musician's who have made this claim and are believable). Given that he was the band leader, I think this is why they lasted so good for so long.

@@joeblog2672maybe he doesn’t go down in history as one of the great vocalists but he had a unique and beautiful voice… possibly at its best on the 1973-75 albums.. A Passion Play, Warchild and Minstrel In The Gallery. Just the humble opinion of one old fan since 1970 ❤️❤️❤️

UnderWraps has Great vocals... I listened to that album non-stop for 4 or 5 months when it first came out on the train going to & from work. Martin's guitar is absolutely fantastic. It's one of his favorite albums, but he says he understands why Tull fans weren't willing to give it a chance. Not woody enough. It's not far from "A", "Broadsword" or "Walk into Light". Tull fans disregard it like "Yes" fans can't handle the brilliant "Drama" album. Until it's given a chance. Ian should get B.Barlow to redo the drums for the box set as a bonus since there's not a lot of additional material to add from that era. Doane did the tour... his first. But I would like to hear B.Barlow's take on it. Cheers.

I was a teenager in those years. Got to see them every year during the Jeffery hammond years. He gave the band a swag, some extra personality. When he left it seemed to me that the band was missing some special ingredient. It was subtle. I know he told anderson he'd only do it for a few years and the story goes after his last show he burned his zebra striped outfit and never looked back. I saw them 12th row for passion play and with quality videos like this he certainly wasn't just 'mailing it in' until his time was up. Hammond and Verdine White of EWF were the two most charasmatic bass players of their time. It's interesting to me how he kept his word and simply walked away.

I'm pretty sure that This performance was done without an audience despite what you see in the opening... And the dubbed in applause at the ending. Tull famously performed songs from their next album. Dark Ages comes to mind. The band is wearing their Warchild gear. And you here absolutely no crowd noise during the performance which would be picked up by the stage mikes even on a soundboard recording. And obviously professionally shot film. It's possible the audience was asked to remain absolutely quiet... But that's a big ask for a Tull performance. Plus... I think in my aging memory I remember being told it was shot day of show after soundcheck to use as a promo film as they did in the pre MTV '70s. Possibly using the "Masion Rouge mobile studio."

I will not debate if JHH was the best bassist Tull had. personally I think it was John Glascock. But he was awesome in his own way and without a doubt the best dressed.

@@tilesetter1953 Again, I will not debate if JHH was Tull's best bassist. That said, If Cornick had not been such a drunk he probably would have lasted longer with the band.

Does anyone have more from this show. It's fantastic, an early (first?) show after recording it, not far from Chateau D'Isaster

Do we all agree that Ian Anderson has the most gorgeous legs in the history of prog?😂

The band you see here is Fase 3 of Jethro Tull - Fase one was "This Was blues band, Fase two was Jethro Tull with Martin Barre and John Evans, not a better blues band BUT a better all around band - Fase three is getting rid of Glenn Cornick and getting a bass player that fell in place with Ian and would not question the music and now they can do all types of music, blues, rock, Mozart folk, and so on the shows started to get tighter, then the best band ever was fast four- Getting Barrymore Barrlow on drums with another keyboard player on synth to get the violin sounds and so fourth and putting John Glasscock a bass player who can sing read and write music and was a profession, the three years 1977 to 1979- No one now even Frank Zappa could out do them so - What is the real and I mean the REAL reason Ian broke up that band but kept Martin Barre? I know. do you? I have to admit it does make sense and very smart on Ian Andersons to see the future be fore it came to be- At the time all us Jethro Tull freaks thought "What the fuck? How and why would he ever break that ass kicking band for? Why? Ian ,say it isn't so. lol lol

Millennials and Gen Z's: "Huh? Lieutenant Dan was a singer & flute player in a Ren faire rock band, before he lost his legs? And their bass player was Inigo Montoya... ?!" 😜

Where is the rest of the footage from this show? So they had a multi cam setup and recorded the whole thing and the rest of the footage is just sitting somewhere? Are we ever gonna be able to watch this full show? Been wondering for years.

It was all lost years ago. This section survives because it was cut out to use as a promo for the single. Tragic!

What audio source was used here? I like it a lot more than the official mix on the Minstrel 40th Anniversary
