Trading down to give up Zeev Buium and then selecting Jett Luchanko 13th overall, with Konsta Helenius still on the board, was controversial for Danny Briere and the Flyers. But in his first NHL training camp, Luchanko is already looking like he could hold his own in the Flyers regular season lineup. Charlie & Bill discuss if Luchanko staying in the NHL is a real possibility.

Last night on RDS (French sport channel) Briere spoke to Marc Denis (comentator) he said hes already have people in the organization wanting to keep Luchanko for at least the 9 games

@@jonstoetzel9720 same, I feel likeLaughton will have a bounce back season this year. He can be an effective penalty killer so he is useful in the lineup for that reason and the fact he can spring short handed opportunities. Either way I doubt Jett makes the team so I don't think it'll matter much

If he keeps up his good play, I’d give him the 9 game tryout just to see how he is against true NHLers. Most likely he’d go back to juniors knowing what he needs to work on……that is unless he kills it on his tryout??

I think this is the way to go, open up his confidence to know "I can compete at this level, these are the things I need to do to stick here next year" let him build his all around game and dominate juniors. But you're right if he keeps playing like this and proves to everyone he's not going anywhere? There's worse scenarios than him playing with the big club

I wanted this kid back in May....was siked when we drafted him. Then fairweather fans kept thinking we drafted Scott Laughton 2.0. No guys, we got ourselves a gem. The question is, does his development get better on a dumpster fire Guelph team? Or playing on the 3rd line with guys like Bobby and Joel?

Jett has been the most impressive player at camp but I'm giving it a 0% chance he plays for the Flyers this year.

In the long run, Danny needs to determine if sending him back is the best chance to make in a 1C eventually. He's not getting 1st or 2nd line minutes on the Flyers. He'll be getting 20+ minutes in Juniors, playing in all situations, and maybe World Juniors. I think that playing time and experience potentially gets us that 1C over playing 3rd or 4th line playing time in the NHL.

Since Coots is slow and washed up, he can be the third line center, Luchenko second line and Frost first line.

It's not one size fits all. I can't stand this notion that, unless someone is a #1 overall generational player, then automatically the "best place for their development" is another X number of years in juniors.

The big difference between Coots and Jett is the physical maturity of Luchanko. He is a physically mature player with great wheels. Coots was no t physical mature and was also not a great skater. Coots had to learn to be good defensively. Luchanko already knows how to play defense.

players are developing younger and they know how to stay fit at an early age ......the hockey IQ is really key here . if he is good to stay and make you better you keep him here

Matt Read was a perfect 2 way 3rd line winger that could PK, had great speed, and scored more than 20 goals...for 3 years. Than he fell off pretty quick. Sad because from 2011-14 he was a terrific 3rd liner.

@@JSpiffy never said he wasn't. Just that 28 is a little young for a guy to fall off. Though I believe he suffered an injury around 2014/15 that affected his skating.
