I love paper piecing. I usually don’t worry too much about getting the initial pieces cut exactly to size or shape. I just make sure that the fabric covers the lines on the paper. Then I use a 1/4” ruler and trim the excess. Perfect blocks every time!

It would! You could even shrink down the blocks and add the 1/4" seam allowance like Laura did.

Laura's technique makes it much easier to not get confused, also you have many blocks to practice with! I too struggle with foundation paper piecing sometimes but this is doable!

I just starting to watch your video and was so happy,to see you are using Carol Doak’s paper and her method of paper piecing! I’m self-taught from more than 20 years ago from Carol’s books and it’s the method I prefer. I’ve done FPP over the years but have never sewn a block with these shapes so I really appreciate your tips on getting these unusual-size fabric pieces with the grain running correctly! Is this fabric available yet, or is it coming?

Beautiful pattern and wonderful tutorial. BUT, have you tried FREEZER PAPER for your FPP? That method would be ideal with a large block like this, and it would save a LOT of paper and ink..

I sew my FPP by using one copy of the pattern. I fold along all the edges of the design and sew right next to the paper following the pattern and just sewing the fabric together... saves so much paper/fabric. I learned this method on a video I found on RU-vid.

@@susanstover7178 That's exactly what I do, only I use freezer paper with the pattern printed on the dull side of the paper; then I fold on all lines, exactly as you do. Next, I press the freezer paper to adhere it to the fabric to keep it in place. Then I do exactly what you do: I peel the pattern back to the fold and stitch along the fold, and proceed as you do. Some people use glue stick to help keep the fabric in place; I use freezer paper. One piece lasts for quite a few blocks.
