In the late 80s or early 90s i was in my town in whittier california outside los angeles. I had parked my car and a young girl with many missing teeth in a beat up car with alaska plates asked me a question, i answered and politly walked away as i did want to cause trouble, she was very friendly, her mother was driving.

I have to say the same about opera singers though. Any opera singer. Absolutely deafening. Jewel has one of the most unique voices you’ll ever hear. Angelic
@frankiek2269
@frankiek2269 Год назад
Jewel is also a yodel’er! Which is something opera singers are supposed to train at. Look at Kristen Chynoweth. She is excellent at it too. It’s weird how many ppl are opera singers, or trained at, like Emmy Rossum. I knew her as an actor from American “Shameless”. Had no idea she was a fantastic singer [opera], until I saw her on Conan doing it.
@drunkeroc

Opera is one of the worst to understand, I don't need someone "trained" at being obnoxious. There I a reason they make no money.

@@drunkeroc You think money is the measure of talent? Then explain Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift or Miley Cryus. None are extraordinary singers. They have NEVER been praised for outstanding vocal abilities on any of their albums or live performances. Yet, each one of them are most definitely richer than your favorites.

I'm just gonna end it here because it's not nice to insult someone for their opinion on music, no matter how....nope, I won't say it because I like you. I'll just say I've NEVER seen anyone watch a Jewel performance and basically say her singing sucks.

LOL. I'm not surprised. I find this reactor, while knowledgeable, sometimes infantile in their responses. Maybe a lack of maturity muscially and age wise, thus coloring their reactions and likes/dislikes. Silly is actually a very weird and somewhat offensive way to describe it. That's my opinion as she has her is free to say the word "silly" to describe her thoughts on Jewel's singing.

I don't think she is making fun of singing! Writing is all hers, music and lyrics, and the lyrics in all of her songs are brilliant. She was very young and probably she didn't know her voice so well, she was still learning, but the lyrics and the music are beyond her age. I am a fan of Jewel from exactly this song and now, after so many years I just feel her music, for me Jewel will never be just a singer or writer, she is inside of me, she is my blanket, my coffee, and my cigarette in the morning, she is my socks. You may think I'm crazy, I can't oppose that, I probably am, but Jewel is part of my soul and helps develop it.

I grew up with Jewel being my favorite artist, both I her songwriting and singing. Her music for me always had a vibe of being sung like a poem being read than a song (not sure if that makes any sense). She is truly a talented songwriter for sure. There are so many songs by her that are better than this one. This was never a favorite for me. Hope you will check out: Life Uncommon (prob my fav of hers), Hands, You we’re meant for me, and down so long. Many other good ones but those are a good start.

She was the Billie Eilish back in the day, without coming from a comfortable living home, without internet, without brother. You may not like her, but she absolutely has her own unique style any one hear her voice will know thats Jewel. She was around 20 when she record this. Her other songs are much more meaningful, "You were meant to me" is a song that she write thats close to pop song style to introduce her to the world. She has demo and its actually quite close to this released version. Her other songs has much deeper meaning on society, on woman right, drug addict, etc. and you gotta listen to her live.. i can imagine people would cry because her voice, her songs are so touching to people's heart.

She is an aquired taste but has 4 Grammy nominations and has sold over 30 million albums. She used to play bars with her dad as a kid in Alaska. Her debut album that this song was a hit on is one of the best selling debuts of all time and sold 12 million. This song was number 11 on billboard but You Were Meant For Me and Foolish Games both hit number 2. Her parents have the hit show Alaska: The Last Frontier. She grew up in the wilderness with no running water and an outhouse and they ate whatever they could kill or grow. It's pretty amazing to get where she has coming from the way she grew up.

She didn’t just grow up in rural Alaska - she grew up on a homestead (literally) totally off grid, near Homer Ak. Her family still lives there and they actually have a TV show - they ended up with that with the TV people having no idea she was part of the family. It’s that show ‘Alaska the Last Frontier’. The Kiltcher family. Her and her dad played at folk festivals and stuff. She is still mostly a folk singer and she also yodels.

Let me add to my comment. I have read alot of stuff on Jewel. Those extra breathy, throaty notes you're not fond of. That was pushed hard by her record company. Yes she has a big Yodoling background . But that flirty breathy notes were pushed to make her seem more "damsel in distress" type of flavor. It worked. As it sold how many records LOL. New sub here. At this time I had been working in development for the studios, booked acts for mine and several other clubs as well as having classically trained working studio/sound engineer/film family. So I am approaching with that perspective. So this is definitely a time capsule type video. It was so of it's period. Rushed to capitalize on her commercial appeal & the coffee house trend that the quality suffered musically. If you are of that era, so many memories & emotions are tied up with it that it can be difficult to hear the truth. This version musically does not stand the test of time. That does not diminish it's importance at the time. It was fresh & different. It did capture a feeling and helped change the radio landscape. Her more mature works like foolish game & hands would be good to revisit. Jewel is a great songwriter. I don't know if she is always the best performer of those songs. She has such a on point commercial look - young, waifish blonde as opposed to some of the other female singer songwriters at the time. Still counting on that 15-35 straight,white male demographic at the time. She also had the likes of Sean Penn being her professional door opener/mentor. Which was a double edged sword professionally. I appreciate your point of view. Better to say when things are not to your taste or that do not resonate.

Well Jewel came out with that song when singers were being very experimental with there vocals (: It wasn't about vocal range or power as much as it was about being unique with your vocal sound (: Yes she sounds like Shakira with that deep squeaky sound (: But that sound or that style I have heard many female singers sing that even if they were joking around as they did it even yes you (: Which means that she was being sort of original and honest with her style with the exception of maybe Shakira which I think was first with it (: But anyway for that style too resonate through out time that other singers knowingly or totaly unaware would sound like that saids much about that singers vocal style and talent (: Now true your entitled too your opinion on any artist you react too and that's fine but please keep in notice that there was a reason that song stuck and she got a hit from that song and she became famous from it (: Not so much because in your words it was silly but because it was different (: Not too many singers sang like that so she stood out and that's what I think my opinion is what it's all about (: Not because of how much vocal talent they had but how different and unique there voice was Period (: If every singer sounded the same and sang the same way how boring would that be (: Plus in my experience listening too music I heard 100 times worse than her and also better (: And she could probably give maybe 90 % of main stream singers of today a run for there money maybe even knock out a few (: Not that there isn't any good singers now but it's seriously overrated a great deal (: Because of technology (: In one aspect it helps in the other it hurts the artist (: But then again that's just my opinion on Jewel (:

Jewel is one of the best vocalist in the world and she can sing and use her vocal as instruments. This song may not showcase her vocal ability and range. Better react with Foolish games and her live performance and she's also the winner of Masked Singer

First time she heard this on the radio, she cried; because she thought she sounded like Kermit the Frog. She sings it differently now, but I honestly prefer the original.

Jewel did the sound way before Shakira. And I am also not a great fan of this song. But she is still very talented - and there is a reason, why she one US masked singer in 2021. I recommend „standing still“ and „down so long“.

foolish games ( the non pop radio edit) would have been a better piece for you you to review, crazy vibrato in her voice both high and low notes

Bad singing? I think that since you have been taught to sing opera, you have envisioned a narrow view of what good singing is. When I was younger I used to hate opera, but as I grew older I opened my mind a little bit, and grew to appreciate it for what it was. I think you still have some growing to do.

She was one of the biggest artists of the 90s. She can actually sing though. Foolish games is very good. You should hope to make the money she's made, she has made over 30 million

I’ve always thought of this as a folksong. A comment on society and ourselves and a reaction to the overproduced dribble that was polluting the airways just prior to the beginning of the autotune age. I like her sound for this song, but I completely understand your comments and why you made them. I’m reminded of something I heard over 40 years ago. Anyone can play the notes. But it’s a gift to be able to make music.

90s sound - Natalie Merchant, Natalie Imbruglia, Gwen Stefani, etc. the sound that looks like Winona Rider. Madonna might have started it with her squeezed vocals.

My favorite of hers has always been Foolish Games. You have to remember, she became popular around the same time as Britney Spears, so it's possible her "coloring of the sound" was in order to stand beside Britney. Jessica Simpson was around the same time, as well... also great vocally (try out Jessica Simpson's I think I'm In Love With You, which essentially is sung to the tune of John Mellencamp's Jack & Diane) so if you want to hear more, I'd suggest Foolish Games, and there's a special version out there that includes piano as the only instrument, simply beautiful. Also, her album this song and Foolish Games was on, Pieces of You, included some very personal poetry in the cd jacket that she had written. Worth a look.

This was from her first album which came out in 1995 when grunge was still king, before Britney, Jessica Simpson, etc.

Well, I know at least two successful singers, both female all though that is a side note. Jewel, and Maggie. Way after this song I kept following Jewel, and now she is even doing more with her career although I believe this put her on the map. Plus her background story is incredible if you look into it. But so is yours Maggie, and in my consideration - damn you are both great singers, if only in my eyes, and ears.

That throaty sound she's making is not how she wanted to sing. It was something the record label made her do for this album, but after that, she rarely sang like that again.

I'm having a hard time not wanting to react harshly to your reaction lol. I've adored all your reactions up to this point and I have to be honest ( since you were ) the way you reacted to jewel made me cringe HARD. You can not like the way someone sings but still breakdown the voice of the singer the same way you do with ALL your other videos. Jewels voice is absolutely amazing to millions of people. Go ahead and do us ( who love her music ) a favor and watch her and Kelly Clarkson sing " foolish games" . Then come back and tell us she doesn't have a power house of a voice. ❤

I think the vocals are intentional and match the theme of the song. Nihilistic and vacuous life in the city. It is performance art. It is meant to make you feel uncomfortable.

The host had a comment I found really insightful; her singing style here almost feels like she's mocking singing, going through the whole thing flippantly......and I think there's some truth to that.....also the whole video has this coquettish vibe to it certain to appeal more to guys, anyway I always like people's honest reactions instead of the disposable "It's great, literally shook rn omg."
