I show how to turn wood jewelry beads on your lathe. These wooden beads are a great addition to a wood turned pendant necklace. I include a few other tips and tricks on jewelry.

I carve beads by hand for fun. Carve, file, sand, and polish by hand. It’s a neat thing. They aren’t as uniform, but I kind of like it. Especially if I’m making them out of seeds or nuts. You ought to try that. Peach pits and other seeds.

Nice video! Why make beads?...for one...large beads are hard to find or expensive, as I like large natural wood beads for plant hangers! Also, just something nostalgic about saying, “See the beads on that hanger...made those out of the climbing tree on the old homestead...bring a piece of home with you!”

Being a segmented wood turner I end up with a lot of multi colored scraps from making my laminate, the make wonderful beads.

Mike, you asked for tips .For catching flying items when parting off I place a 2litre ice cream box on the bedways. Nearly always successful, and essential when ejecting stuck Morse taper mounted Steb centres with a push rod. Some shavings protect the tips.(No longer using my wife as wicket keeper!). For continuous cutting beads &c., providing the bore is not too fine nor tool pressure too great, a hardened steel rod can be used as a simple mandrel, with bored wooden Morse taper in the tailstock. I use a three jawed chuck, which also allows the headstock to act as mandrel saver. Bushes are no problem. Of course a long drill is necessary, and you could still mount the blank in your collet chuck and let the cut beads slide along the mandrel safely.. Bernard.

Hope to make some jewelry as soon as the shop warms up a bit. Do you make several beads at at time from the same wood?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 8 месяцев назад
Sometimes. Or even buy a box of wooden beads from Walmart or an arts and crafts store.

My 12 year old granddaughter will love some new beads. I’m a pen turner so I have lots of cut offs. Thank you for the video. Why didn’t you use your new Laguna for these small pieces?
@MikePeaceWoodturning

I was using my webcam video setup. I have not had the time to figure out the lighting and camera stand setup yet on the Laguna.

I am attempting to make bone beads as I do a lot on bone and shell pendant carving. I've never been able to find a way to keep a piece of bone in a chuck or on a spindle that isn't anything but a frustrating failure. Do you have any advice?

@11:43 Good practice makes you a good wood turner, but I would never try that like this guy, because even good wood turners get a catch, and with that knife, no matter the skill, it will be painful, :-)

@@MikePeaceWoodturning Oh, no worries, man, it was well appreciated. It came for me just after the commercial in middle of your video, and I was not sure is that part of your video or from the add :-). Then, with Halloween coming, I thought maybe you put some tricks and treats for us viewers.
