Bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been dubbed the most innovative material with the utmost power. Casting light on BMG alloys developed with platinum, Ulrich Klotz of the @femforschungsinstitutedelm7731- the Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry in Germany - charts the rise of amorphous glassy metal and its potential for the jewellery industry. Current casting challenges caused by platinum’s high melting point of nearly 1,800°C - think crucible stress, cracks and porosity - can be overcome by platinum-based BMGs due to their high as-cast hardness and low-melting temperature.
