As a Jew who has been to Turkey numerous times, has Turkish friends and studied history in depth, I was hoping to see and hear real vibrant stories from the past and present about this unique community. Instead of focusing on the hospitality the Ottoman Empire extended to our people when we were in dire need both in the 16th and 20th centuries, we were kidnapped on a chaotic “trip” with various stabs at the ugly side of todays Turkey (every country has an ugly side). Instead of learning about Ladino language, the host pivots to Yiddish phrases as if anyone cares. Why weren’t we taken inside a Turkish synagogue or a family’s Shabbat dinner or meet a mixed marriage couple. Speak to a Turkish Jewish elderly person or learn about influential Turkish Jews. Anyways, rant over.

It was a different depiction of the Jewish life in Turkey. There are also about 2,000 or 2,500 Jews in Izmir (where I am from), but it was not mentioned. In the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul was one of the three big cities with a Jewish population, the other two being Salonica and Izmir. Izmir has a Synagogue Street downtown, as well as a few landmarks with a Jewish heritage. The Jewish population in Turkey used to be 100,000. Nowadays, it’s about 15,000 and maybe even less. It’s not only due to Erdogan (it largely is), but some of it can be a general emigration of young Turkish population (Muslim, Jewish, or Christian) to find jobs abroad. I know many Muslim Turks around my age to settle abroad, to Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, US, Japan, UAE, UK, Switzerland. Not all has emigrated just because of Erdogan’s political agenda, but some decided to go due to terrible economic situation (and it is due to Erdogan’s policies as well). Thanks for making this interesting video, although, there is a lot more than that to show about the Jewish life in Istanbul or Turkey. Pogroms in 1930s causing Jews to escape the Thrace Region to come to Istanbul, or synagogue attacks in 1980s and 2000s. Maybe Daniel and producers picked convenient facts that were easier to access. I was looking forward to this episode on the Jewish life in Turkey. Thanks a lot.

Thank you for your brief presentation regarding the Jews people in Turkey. Based on the Bible, the first Church was in Antioch, Turkey, early in the first century. Called: "The Early Church." In the era of the Apostle Paul, the travel routes of Israel, Turkey and Greece were relatively multi-trip. It can be seen that the habits of the Jews and the Turks are relatively the same: food and lifestyle. It is hard to find the difference between a person of Jewish blood and a Turkic who had spent their life in Istanbul. (Btw. On a trip to Germany, I found apfelstrudel similar to baklava).

4:15 It’s clear that you specifically filmed ultra-conservative and low wage earner people on streets and edited out the rest of us to give viewers the impression that current day Turkey isn’t any different than Iran/Afghanistan. That tactic kinda worked well at the time when Midnight Express was filmed, but not any more, sorry. I care for facts not for your ideology or theirs or Erdogan or islamists.

One last note: If you joke like us, laugh the way we do, eat what we eat and do not discriminate anyone, you are one of us. We wellcome anyone. That's our way of life. We say, let's come together! Instead, we get an overly excited (and cringe) host and his harassment of Ladino-Turkish speaking people with random Yiddish/German slang. It becomes very clear why Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews feel their identities and history are being erased in Israel when you think about this supposed host who intended to introduce different Jewish cultures to the audiences (!)

Very much false information in the video. The reason why the turkish minority in germany votes for Erdogan is that german society and politics has been discriminating against Turks for years, and still do, and Erdogan gives them a feeling of acceptance. You are not accepted here but we accept you, you belong to us. While in Germany you are not accepted even if you live here already in the 3rd generation. The DTIP and the mosques have nothing to do with that, but the racism in German society and politics. a little self-responsibility would be appropriate at this point instead of giving the blame to others.

Why do many Muslim majority countries such as Turkey and Iran that also have some minority of Jews in them, are so kind and treated these Jews so well and FAIRLY too, just like all the other citizens of that countries ? Why does Israel treated the Palestinian so horribly and treated them worst than animals and even treated them continuously this way for over 78 years too?? And why does USA and it's strong allies totally do not condemn Israel, this horrible APARTHY of them against so many innocent Palestinian even until now and for over 78 years too ? BUT INSTEAD, they continuously gave Israel even MORE powerful weapons ! WHAT IF, those Muslim majority countries with some very minority of JEWS in them ALSO DECIDE to treat these minority JEWS exactly the same way too, as how Israel has been treating the Palestinians for over 78 years ?? Will Israel, USA and all of their strong allies condemn this if those minority JEWS living in other Muslim majority nations are treated exactly this way too by those nations ? OF COURSE THEY WILL, and they will probably immediately go to WAR too against these nations if this thing are to happen !!

I was in turkey a few months ago. the country and majority are somewhat conservative to western Europe standards but liberal to Muslim standards. Turkey is somewhere in the middle. barbaric Muslims to the west and sell out heathens to the Muslim world. no one is being forced to be religious in turkey, only that the religious and conservative are just freer to express themselves in public. if you want to go to mosque you can, if you want to go to a bar you can. depending where you are in the country some parts are more religious than others. most people migrate out of Turkey for economic reasons because inflation is extremely bad there. most eventually return. it hardly has to do with religion.

I liked the content and history, but I found the presenter's showmanship and peacocky flamboyance distracting. He's clearly a good entertainer, but it would've come out more had he tuned it down 50% in my biased opinion. Instead of showing off his hot bod and clothes could perhaps show more of this massive city through the Jewish lens. I don't think docos are primarily for entertainment.

What's Israel got to do with Judaism? Many Jews are completely against Israel. And you forget to mention that Istanbul Byzantium was the Greeks from Megara in 657 BC, and remained primarily Greek-speaking until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in AD 1453. Plus: The Origins of Santa Claus is of the Greek bishop, Saint Nicholas, and Saint Nicholas, has nothing to do with Turkish people or Romans. You went to an English school, right? Because, only the English scholars and German, and Dutch settlers compared Saint Nicholas to Odin's magical horse, Sleipnir. (So far from the truth) indeed. And most Turks are actually Greek and Middle Eastern people. The Origins of Turkey is from Mongolia and has nothing to do with Istanbul. All the Ancient Ruins in Turkey are Of Greek Origins. The Greek and Middle East Civilizations did trade with Asia and Africa. Before Alexander the Great. And before the Silk Road. The Ancient Greeks had maps of America, Britain, Asia, China, and Africa. The knowledge of Great Africa and Great China is in Greek history. There is nothing much in Greek history about Jews, Germans, British and Dutch. There is no mention of any Odin. Plus: The Antikythera mechanism (c. 100 BC) is considered to be the first known mechanical analog computer (National Archaeological Museum, Athens). Look it up and get cultured.

Constantinople is right.. though I will say, perhaps it was better for Constantinople to have had the Islamic influence as that enabled it to become the multicultural hub it is today
