We all know the Jewish origins of Nissan and Rav4. But did you know that Kia, Ford, Volvo, and BMW also have Jewish origins? Dr. Sarah Bunin Benor, Director of the HUC-JIR Jewish Language Project, offers definitive linguistic evidence in this spoof lecture.

Original and brilliant. Reminds me of the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who found a Greek derivation for every word. Yashar koach and chag Purim sameach.

In order to explain this video to a non-Yiddish- speaker, I gave the exact same movie scene example.

And while some cars might be lemons, only one type is a Citroën with actual roots in Bialystok.

Very good analysis. I'll add that while Mazda claims to draw inspiration from the Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda, the truth is a bit more complicated. Keeping in mind that the Talmud is already aware of that same god (e.g. Sanhedrin 39a, there identified as Hormiz), clearly the invocation of Mazda (wisdom) without the title Ahura (lord) serves as rebuke of the deification of wisdom.

A wonderful and clever Purim shpiel. I love not only her presentation but also the comments other people have posted. I will add one more: The Corvette is a sexy car. Obviously the name comes from "kurve" with a diminutive ending. (There's even an old joke about that. A man goes to visit his mother and he says, "Ma, I can't wait to show you my beautiful new Corvette that's outside." She replies, with outrage, "How dare you bring that kind of woman home to meet your mother!"

Interesting. When I hear Siena I think the Italian city or the color. Learning there’s a possibility that Henry Ford might have judo Persian ancestors instead of Norwegian 😮
